It's up to you to pre-plan it. Make it happen for you in your life.

I've thought about this for years. I'm currently buying my first house so I'll be draining most of my non-retirement resources... but at some point in another 3-5 years (especially if refinancing becomes opportunistic from interest rate cuts) after I get a little further along with finances, I might be open to just FORCING a break for anywhere between 6 months to a year. I'm talking about quitting, and then living a half year to a year's worth of a "vacation," followed by studying a cert towards the end and then reentering the workforce.

Ideally I'd let my employer-at-the-time know that they can offer me an unpaid leave sort of plan for 6-12 months, where I return right back to them afterwards. Maybe tell them some BS like I'm climbing literal mountains as part of a life goal or maybe that I'm enacting as a missionary pursuing a pilgrimage for a religion for a time, but I'd bet the odds of them accepting that are slim. Wouldn't need it though at that time, ideally I'd have a decade's worth of CoL saved up, investment income, and I'll be super honest I'm very doubtful I'll have a hard time finding another job at another company (high success rate with interviews and being selected amongst candidates).

I've had two months off in between switching jobs and location. Some may have noticed I've been way more active on the misc. That's because I'm bored chitless. Only 2 weeks left before I start working again but after about a week or two off work I get so fkin bored and feel like a degenerate. The only plus side is going to the gym more consistently just to break the day up a bit

I love working. Not a huge fan of my job, but working for 8/9hrs a day m-f I don’t hate. I’m easily bored and distracted though, so having something to do for the bulk of the day between lifting and eating, keeps things easy for me.

I spent a month looking for this job a few years back, didn’t file for unemployment but legit was over being at home/nothing to do after about a week.

I can’t relax though. I have to constantly be moving, so people taking it easy and just lounging around/doing nothing confuses me. It’s my nightmare.

i never really gave a flip about being skilled at any job unless the nba wanted me. my tenants pay me rent, i cash the checks at my local bank or on my phone...done. occasionally look at stock portfolio/add money.

I think it’s a little different for everyone. I think I enjoy work more than school but that’s based on my specific experience from then and now.

That said, pre working definitely was way easier and with less responsibility. That isn’t always a good thing though. It’s why people die shortly after retirement. Gotta do something.

well i never worked a job but i do know school mostly sucked aside from PE, recess, pizza parties and some field trips.

Meh I don't believe in the career/job you enjoy thing. I can think of MAYBE two things I'd enjoy either a Locomotive operator or a Commercial Pilot. But 40/hrs a week, 5 days a week, with a 1 hour commute sucks.

Even then, you're not making grand money. You're still not retiring till 67.


I think the best way out of the rat race is mastering a skill within your 9 to 5 and then going on self employed.
