What ever happened to the 40 hour work week?

It seems like most office jobs these days expect people to work 9-10 hour days as the norm. I see people all the time coming in at 7am and not leaving until 6pm (facility has a gym so i work out, then still see some of these people crunching away when I am finished working out).

Are they just inefficient? Seems like such a waste of time. There will always be more work you can do.

I work 40/Hr weeks my only real complaint with the job is I don't make enough money.

I hardly do any work for the money I get, it's just not nearly as much as I need to have the kind of freedom I want.

Is enough I could somewhat live off rest of my life if I wanted to but not trying to be on some average type stuff.

Oh yeah and I could sending that to your boss not working out too well for you cause of number 7.

this is sort of what I do now. I refuse to work more than an 8 hour day. Once I reach that time frame I pack up my chit and leave my cubicle. Unless someone says something to me, I'll keep doing it. Not going to let a job dictate my life.

This thread will backfire because most miscers and most people seem to think working long hours and overtime is something to be proud of and that people who dont work as much as them are lazy.


In my previous job, in my department I'd usually be the first one to leave if there's no immediate thing that needs to be taken care of and I'd always be made to feel guilty because a couple others would stay back... There was one girl who'd literally just sit at her desk and jsut be on her phone after the work day had ended and she'd end up leaving like an hour or so later ... I dont understand it at all. I can sort of understand my boss because he'd usually just be sending out a couple of emails and then leaves usually an hour or 30 mins later at the most... But leaving straight at 5 always made me feel guilty and they'd poke fun at me for leaving right at work days end sometimes, so i'd wait 10 mins out of guilt lol.

The finance department was the worst ... I dont think they finish up until like 7-8pm usually.

I can relate. I always feel a little guilty when I leave before the others.

I believe in working hard to achieve a goal, but when you work long hours in an office, you are doing it for someone else

Graduates think you have to work longer to be more productive and earn more money, but that is not true. Could I have gone to another Consultancy, where I earn more money but for almost twice the amount of hours per week? Yes, but eventually you hit marginal utility on your earnings, especially when you start valuing your spare time more.

Are there days when I work 10, 11 or 12 hours? Sure, but then I look for opportunities to take half a day off to balance it out, and not in a month or two, but the days or week. You yourself are your most important resource, so treat it well.

work 3 twelve hour shifts a week. no complaints

may be a long day for some but i much prefer it over going to work 5 days a week

i see this a lot and in all honesty i think it's inefficiency. ********/social browsing all day, fantasy football lineups on their computer all day etc.

either that or i'm just a hell of a lot faster than everybody else. i doubt it.

i am a salaried employee there is no overtime. and i will absolutely stay late when the job calls for it. but random tuesdays with nothing special going on and i see people sending emails out at 6-630 from their desk (i see it on my phone later) i just shake my head. this is stuff that could EASILY wait for the morning (when nobody is productive otherwise).

nobody's going to come give you a trophy because you hung around an hour longer or because you don't use all your vacation time. you are a sucker.

Great advice to follow if you want to be the first to be fired if/when the company you work for decides they want to do employee evaluations, or cut costs.

In certain fields, people work long hours because they feel if they don't, they will be the first to be let go, and it's often true.

i'm not clocking out at 4:59 every day don't get me wrong. but if you stay late JUST because you think you'll get fired otherwise, you have to be kidding me. it's 6 and you're doing busy work while your boss is probably home by now and couldn't care less.

You hit the nail on the head and it's because misery loves company.

They don't really think you're lazy, that's just their coping mechanism. It's easier to call someone lazy than to be envious of all their free time.

It's all about culture.

Luckily I've found a job where it's 9-5 and it really is that. In fact people roll in late and leave early, and take hour lunches. Call in sick all the time.

Granted, it's a piss easy job and probably quite bleak in terms of prospects but it'll do for now.

I hate that working late to look good bchit.

I always make sure to leave 8 hours after I've arrived. Sometimes I'll pop in on the weekends to check on things that are running but that's just for 30 min max.

8-5 most days but not uncommon for 7-6 or more for deadlines and budget season. At least I get an hour for lunch so it's supposed to even out to 40hrs a week.

I'm in health admin so my customers are operational. Hospital day shift starts at 8 and not supposed to leave early except for rare occasions for "customer service" to operations. It's very old school way of working and yeah it sucks but it's also healthcare which is unique compared to other professional settings. It's not like our nurses can just pack up and go an hour before just because all of his patients are asleep.

I am currently trying to get out of a job so I stay late just to keep my job but really I want out so bad. Its a way of showing work ethic. I wish I could leave on time or stay an hour extra but make it a 4-day work week. I think thats wayyy better.

I'm self employed but if I was employed I would find a job with hours like this.

I'd much rather go balls deep and work my ass off for 3 days straight, if it means I have the other 4 days off. There's not many things in life more depressing than the Mon-Fri work week.

This is complete bs. In large corporations the layoffs come from executives or directors that more than likely do not even know you exist and need to cut the salary budget to get a bigger bonus. If and only if your direct manager gets to decide who is let go then kissing his butt a little might help but usually if an entire department including managers is being wiped out, you just busted your ass for nothing.

I see this all the time and I expect it is inefficient. I am there 8 hours if not less sometimes and every year the partner comes to me and says I have the best efficiency and I bring more money than anyone else does. They just laly gag and mess around.

I work this too (healthcare) its great having more days off than days on
Love it when im day off on a Monday and watch all the miserable officecells start their 5 days in a row hell

We have to work weekends tho so its not all good
