Spanking Your Kid is Bad According to Experts
Parents who hit their kids may believe that a swat “just gets their attention” or imposes old-fashioned discipline, but spanking in fact makes behavior worse than it was before and can cause long-term harm, pediatricians said Monday.
The American Academy of Pediatrics strengthened its advice against corporal punishment in update guidelines, saying it makes kids more aggressive and raises the risk of mental health issues.
“Experiencing corporal punishment makes it more, not less, likely that children will be defiant and aggressive in the future,” the group says in its new guidelines to pediatricians.
“There’s no benefit to spanking,” said Dr. Robert Sege of Tufts Medical Center in Boston, who helped write the guidelines.
“We know that children grow and develop better with positive role modeling and by setting healthy limits. We can do better.”
Verbal abuse and humiliation is also counterproductive, the pediatrics group said.
“Parents, other caregivers, and adults interacting with children and adolescents should not use corporal punishment (including hitting and spanking), either in anger or as a punishment for or consequence of misbehavior, nor should they use any disciplinary strategy, including verbal abuse, that causes shame or humiliation,” the group says in the updated guidelines.
"Within a few minutes, children are often back to their original behavior. It certainly doesn’t teach children self-regulation," Sege told NBC News.
"Techniques such as time out and other effective forms of punishment, the goal is to teach the child to regulate herself, so that she will have the ability to control and manage her own behavior. And that’s what it really is all about."
Americans still strongly believe in beating, spanking or paddling children, both at home and in school.

The belt worked on me.
Spanking is staying for me in the future srs. It'll fix any overly bad behavior real quick. What's important is that it doesn't escalate to full on abusing which is what some families get wrong.
Some families get it wrong by not spanking or yelling at their kid at all and they end up being spoiled brats.
Gotta have a balance.

I'm all about evidence based practices and scientific research but I don't believe this. My generation and older got spanked or whooped and it worked for everyone I know. Kids who don't get hit end up stabbing their mom 28 times over an argument

You can flick your kids to get their attention. Not so much painful as it is annoying. That + being strict/clear with punishments.
Got hit like everyone else and believe it isn’t damaging in moderation.
If a parent is conscious enough to keep it in moderation I don’t see the preference for that instead of the first form of discipline.
The point is not to instill fear. Good luck with the kid taking risks when it’s afraid of trying new things for fear of punishment in every area of their life.

I'm a big fan of Lenon Honor on youtube, and he talks a lot about the habitual abuse within African-American families (same is true in British-Jamaican families IME). From they way they talk to each other, to 'whoopings'.
I highly recommend watching this video, before you make up your mind regarding how you treat your children...

Yeah I got the wooden spoon as a kid. Made me walk a straight and narrow line. That being said, I’ve never hit my kids with object. But there’ve been a few times a spanking was in order. Parents these days are too afraid to set boundaries and discipline their kids resulting in little mini a-holes that grow up to be entitled turds.

"No matter where they live in the world, university students who were spanked as children are more likely to engage in criminal behavior, according to new research by Murray Straus, co-director of University of New Hampshire Family Research Lab. Even young adults whose parents were generally loving and helpful as they were growing up showed higher rates of criminal behavior."

Literally every piece of research that has ever been done on spanking comes to this same conclusion.
And yet, people on the misc always disagree.
Gee, I wonder who's right

If someone doesn't do what you want the appropriate response is to hit them.
Can't imagine how that's a bad lesson to teach a kid.

If that example is anything to go by it doesn't sound like you are making good life decisions, and are engaging in high risk behaviour, though maybe that it not the fault of how you were raised.

Yeah im not hitting my child ever.
Feel bad for those that think you need to beat a kid for them to listen.
My dad never laid a finger on me, and guess what? Whenever he raised his voice I immediately shut up and listened. Why? Because I knew once it got to the point my dad had to get invovled I knew I was in the wrong.
Just lmao @ idiots who constantly beat their kids. Its like the sheep that cried wolf, after a few times you get over it and ignore it. My mom would try to beat me as a kid and I began to realize it was for stupid reasons and began to not give a fuk about her getting mad with me.

There are two types of kids. Those that need to be physically disciplined. And those that don't. Some kids just never need it. The one's that need discipline and don't get it are the ones parents are calling the police to deal with when they reach 12-13 years old because they are out of control. There are a lot of parents that are afraid of their kids that are in the 14-16 year range. Literally afraid for their safety because those kids are out of control.
I absolutely will not try to 'correct' someone's fukk up of never teaching their child discipline. The way civil law works here. As long as a child or resident of a structure isn't physically hitting/attacking anyone. They can do whatever they want in the house including destroy everything in the home. I've seen it a few times and parents then expect the police to offer a solution after their kid just took a hammer to the windows, the TV's or started throwing dishes around breaking them... Without fail, literally every time, these are super liberal parents that never physically disciplined their child because they didn't believe in it.
Just because someone is a Dr or is highly educated doesn't mean they are immune from this non-sense. Awhile back had a neurosurgeon call the police because his 12 year old was out of control chasing him around the house with a 8" kitchen knife. Literally so out of control the guy had to take off running to a neighbors house for safety to call the police.
Also the most ridiculous situation was a SWAT call on a 14 year old. Essentially the kid carried a gun, committed a few robberies and a murder. He lived with his grandparentsHis grandparents were trying to get him to give up that thug life. He got tired of it and kicked his them out their house. Carried a gun so they were scared he would hurt them. At that point they called the police to rat him out for the burglaries and the murder...
Its easy to sit around musing over disciplining a child when you have a respectful well mannered kid. Try raising some of these little badazzes with that line of logic though.

I think I smacked my sons diapered butt once as a toddler. I don't use corporal punishment. He's turned out pretty darned good and is not a spoiled brat who thinks he can get away with stuff.
