Putting aside the ethics/social economics of prostitution itself, the dysfunction on the supply side, which is all some serious chit, what I really believe is this:
The problem with saying "the current climate" is that you're excusing dysfunction on the demand side.
Even in the most religiously conservative and traditional cultures, prostitutes are a thing. Guys confusing interactions with sex workers for a substitute for real emotional contact is toxic for everybody involved, like some autist who gets too far into the fictional world of Star Trek. You're not a starship captain, and an escort isn't a date. EASILY spend $80-$100 a week with my girlfriend. I'll usually get one meal, she buys the next one, a movie or some kind of date night.
