How come all Americans have the same accent?

In Norway you Can tell where a person is from instantly from his accent. Cities 1 hour apart from eachother have distinctly different accents. Northern & southern Norwegian sound completely different & Norway is small af compared to US.

Meanwhile it seems like most americans speak the same generic american accent. Maybe my english isnt good enough but Can you tell where Biden is from by listening to him? Obama? Joe rogan? Same generic accent

I speak Texan...Texans accent sounds nothing like a S. Louisianan cajun, much less Boston. I need subtitles to understand someone from Minisota.

Every celebrity from US has the same generic American accent apart from southern brahs, new yorkers & Boston brahs. Am i wrong???

I mean what accent does Seth Rogen speak? Tom Cruise? Brad pitt? They all speak the same to me. Again am i wrong??

We have very distinct accents around the country.
Wisconsin accent
Boston accent
Minnesota accent
Texas accent
Louisiana accent.
Georgia accent.
Tennessee accent
Alabama accent
Pennsylvania accent
Maine accent
Boston Accent
New York accent
New Jersey accent
Midwest accent

All are pretty different

It goes A LOT deeper than "southern brahs". Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina vs North Carolina, etc, etc... They all have their own accents.

Same thing with east coast, don't forget New Jersey, Massachusetts, etc. They all talk differently

I'd say the "generic non regional american accent" you hear narrated in Blockbuster movie commercials for example is probably most common in the biggest cities of any well known state.

Pretty much same here in UK, country is small as fuk yet the accent can change every 13 miles or so.

It does feel like the UK has more accents than the US but still I wouldn't go as far to say every American sounds the same.

Someone from New York obviously sounds completely different to someone from the Deep south of Texas.

WTF accents are way different all over. West coast accents are notably different from places like Texas, cities like NY and Boston got their own accent, it's different all over the place.

You're talking about Actors/Celebrities. People who train themselves to be mass appealing. That probably extends to speech. (It's well known that sometimes people suppress dialects, to have a more mass appealing accent. I've no doubt many actors/celebs train themselves to do that growing up.)

Many British celebs can sound similar, just like newscasters, they sometimes train themselves to have a neutral/mass appealing accent.

I'm British born and bred, and I can tell the difference between American dialects. You made the suggestion that your English wasn't good enough to hear dialects, and I agreed with you.

Practically everyone ITT is saying the exact same thing, so maybe the problem is with your comprehension of American English.

All those celebrities either had no accent to begin with or lost theirs on purpose. The celebrity or newscaster accent is very prevalent in any big city in the US. It's kinda like received pronunciation in the UK. Some examples of celebrities with regional accents

Lucas Black (Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, kid in Sling Blade) - North Alabama accent

Matthew McConaughey - Texas

Walton Goggins - North Alabama

Tommy Lee Jones - Texas

Yeah, I feel the same about American accents. I can distinguish southern accent from the rest and that's about it. The rest sound the same to me. Maybe you have to be native english speaker to distinguish American accents, I don't know.

Brooo i Can tell differences in accents. Not hard at all. My point is that the differences are small & many speak «generic American».

How is New York accent so different from California accent? I understand both perfectly. The differences between dialects in Norway is so much bigger. We struggle to understand eachother.
