I'm not white, but never gave this a real thought until recently. I was born in 88 and the vast majority of what I grew up watching was white people. I mean I watched Fresh Prince like every normal kid, but most movies and holiday specials and basically everything was a predominantly white cast.

If there was a black Christmas movie it was always in the hood, or a Mexican one I can't think of anything lol.

Back on topic. I recently watched Jingle Jangle and I can't remember a movie where they showed little black kids being nerdy, weird and inventive. And I see shows like Gentified that just didn't exist when I was younger.

Don't ruin my thread with racist comments, I just want a vote and maybe an explanation as to why.

This is a tricky subject, and the problem is not matter how nuanced I will attempt to make my perspective, someone will bastardized it. Here goes...


Yes, I think it does. For America in particular. IMO not so much the percentage of races/ethnicities depicted, but how they are depicted.

English is the most widely learned second langauge in the world, and US films and TV shows dominate the globe and are often translated in other languages. (I've been to SEA Asia and watched Hollywood films with subtitles.) Images have a lot of influence in peoples minds, so how races and ethnicities are habitually depicted matters.

I don't think a lot of Americans realize just how much influence their media has in the world. American pop culture trends tend to become trends around the world.

It's a reason why I strongly dislike the Hip Hop industry, because it puts images in the minds of blacks and non-blacks that to be a 'real nikka' (meaning an authentic black person) is to be violent, a career criminal, materialistic, dumb, promiscuous, a drug dealer, and a drug taker.

For some reason though a lot of miscers seem to think that they are - and everyone can be - immune to being influenced by the images that they consume regularly. Despite advertising being a multi billion dollar industry, with data to show that it works. Also, social psychology experiments show that we are often influenced make choices and behave in certain ways subconsciously - even if we consciously deny or are unaware of being influenced.

or if someone WANTS to make a movie about other races do so. stop with the forced bullchit

similarly, why does it make sense to go to a population of 80% of a certain race and force them to watch something about the 5%?

realistically, if 80% comprise a certain color in a certain area you're going to interact with that majority demographic more. that means more of the same demographic producing these things, e.g. more of that majority demographic producing, creating, putting the jobs into effect, etc. AND more of that same demographic consuming said product

Unfortunately it does. But it shouldn't, as long as the group isn't shown in a negative light.

You do not need role models, except they make learning a lot easier in most situations.
