Has anyone had to take ETG (alcohol) tests for work? Supposedly detects for 80 hours?

This is ****ing bull****. There have been a bunch of accidents at work lately and they think the people were drunk on the job and now we have to submit to random ETG tests (not BAC). Reading online, it says that they can detect drinking for 80 hours after your last drink. What the ****, does this mean I can't drink on a Friday night if I have to work on Monday? Is this even legal, how can a workplace essentially ban you from drinking in your private time or on vacation?

From what I've read, the 80 hours is mostly a myth about it seems reliable for a day or two. I've found an ETG Calculator on reddit that doesn't just add 80 hours to your last drink but not sure if I trust those ****s (http://www.etgcalculator.com). Please help, I just want to continue getting hammered on the weekend like I have for the past 20 years.

Sounds pretty stupid to me.

Why go through the hassle and cost when they can just give people breathalyzer?

Who cares if you got drunk yesterday, all I'd care about is whether or not you're sober at work.

I think they test for something called creatinine (not creatine)

I've taken the tests that look for creatinine and drank the night before with a negative result. Just don't get wasted and drink lots of water. alcohol and its metabolites go through your system fast.

They're trying to use the threat of it as a deterrent if it's even true.

They need to get your BAC at the time you're working.

A guy at the door with a breathalyzer is more likely what you'll face.

They don't want to have to deal with having a breathalyzer calibrated and people fighting the results. Easier for them to send your piss to a lab and the person take it up with the lab.

That's where it gets dicey - because currently it's illegal federally but legal by the state.

That depends on which law your company goes by.

Trades still give out piss tests to new hires til this day, with marijuana being legal.

With most jobs, if you are hurt at work the first thing they do is a blood test to see what's in your system.

And yes that is BS because for example with pot, stays in your blood forever, doesn't mean you were high at the time of the accident.

So yes, most jobs can and will dictate what you consume outside of work, albeit indirectly.

OP I make these kinds of tests for a living. It depends on what test you're doing as well. They have an ELISA test which would give quantitative number, dipstick over the counter urine test, and GC/MS. They will likely give you the over the counter urine test which you dip in a cup and is cheapest and fastest. The test measures metabolites of alcohol ETG. The test has a "Cutoff" of 500 ng/ml typically because of the FDA requirements. As long as you have lower levels than 500 ng/ml you will pass, meaning even if the test detects the metabollites, it just needs to be lower to pass. If you try to drink a lot of water to piss it out they can measure other things to determine that but I doubt they will. The amount of metabollites you produce and how long it takes to flush out varies by person to person so 80 hours can be real tea for one person and fake news for another.

im pretty sure i read in Canada certain jobs like truckers still don't let you smoke, or its frowned upon and they can still fk you somehow even though its legal

Yeah, I just left the corporate life after 15 years and enjoy the tradie life much more even though I make 1/5th what I used to...this is the first annoying thing I've encountered and hoping it is just a scare tactic for the many **** ups I do work with

its not about catching drunks, its about control, ive seen it many times in many work places, especially since weed was legalized, brb smoke a j, 4 weeks later someone backs into you boom drug test and your fired, its a fact and it is happening as we type

I wish I would have done it earlier. I'm barely bringing in 30k/yr right now and had a job offer last week for 150k/yr to go back to corporate land and almost took it but then remembered how ****ing miserable I was working 90 hours a week and being 'on call' 24/7 and required to have my laptop on my person/accessible 24/7

I can't even recall how many times I've driven my car high on weed, has to be in the 1000's, with no problems at all.

I've even driven a few time drunk as hell when I was younger(THAT, I don't recommend and I don't do anymore) and haven't had any problems.

I've never had a single accident and I've been driving over 20 years.

Because I'm not a **** up, it's not because I got lucky or some other BS.

It's not because I was always sober behind the wheel, it's because I'm always alert and careful behind the wheel no matter what.

An idiot is gonna **** up regardless, it's only a matter of time.

Well weed is legal in California and almost every job bans you from smoking in your private time, because it stays detectable in your urine for up to 30 days. So if you smoke a blunt and 2 weeks later you get into an accident at work and have to take a drug test, guess what? You're fuked
