Is the “zero sum game” mindset uniquely American?

The idea of the “zero sum game” or “there’s no free lunches”

The idea that, if I give you something - public healthcare, a living wage, subsidised education - this by definition takes something away from me.

I’ve only ever found it a prevalent idea in the US. It’s not common in Australia, Singapore or any of the states of the former Soviet Union.

Anyone encountered this mindset outside the US of A?

Most liberals have this mindstate for wealth envy.

If there are people making $250k+ it takes away from their $30k salary somehow.

Obviously this makes zero sense since wealth accumulates more wealth to those doing business with the wealthy. And the wealthy need materials, supplies, and labor to make more wealth.

People who are against expanding entitlement programs/government aren’t saying they don’t want poor people to have stuff because they want to keep the stuff for themselves.

People who are against expanding entitlement programs/government tend to be that way because it’s expensive and de-incentivizes poor people to work. And yes, it’s expensive for people who actually pay federal taxes, the upper 50% of Americans.

once a society reaches a critical mass it will always have this mindset to a greater or lesser degree. however i agree the US seems to cling more tightly to it than other developed countries.

I would have thought in hugely overpopulated countries like China and India it would be more prevalent because there is much more scarcity of resources.

I have to go with very different cultures.

China has a more collectivist mindset and the individual is expected to live for their family and the country more than for themselves.

In India the caste system meant that people developed the habit of being resigned to their role in life, therefore no reason to be mad...generally an attitude of acceptance.

I think this video is relevant if not specifically about a zero sum mindset.

China has an authoritarian rule and social credit system so it doesnt really matter what the chinese commoner's mindset is, they get told what they are getting and that is the end of it

Mutual investments exist in a lot of networks and are arguably the most important feature for well-being.

I think not every country includes a universal character, and the US includes networks, like most nice parts of the Northeast, with a mutual character.
