Can't wrap my head around the Big Bang Theory (SRS)

Not the TV show...

I understand that the Big Bang Theory is exactly that; a theory.

So, before space (or the modern day version of space that we know & understand) existed... & before the big bang supposedly occurred... what was there?

Literature tells us that all the matter in the cosmos existed in a form smaller than a subatomic particle.

I cannot even begin to fathom "nothing" existing, minus said particle... somehow resulting in a violent explosion that created the universe over the span of billions of years.

What in the actual F**k. Any smart guys around here care to help a dummy understand this theory better?

Actually, if the Big Bang is correct, then nothing is before the universe, since it analytically belongs to the definition of a singularity that it is the beginning of space and time.


That is to say, there is nothing temporally before the universe. Is there something metaphysically or logically prior to the universe? If one accepts the extension of causal reasoning, then yes, there would be a cause of the universe. But I don't consider it as an explosion since it's not a physical reaction from a material, it's the literal ontological creation of the universe. IMO, we need to pose the question of a universe cause in a philosophical way too.

There's the possibility, though, that a pre Big Bang model is true but an eternal past is still a tall order in light of that, since those models would at most move the beginning back, but not abolish it.

Another question to ask is because the universe is expanding, what's at the end of it? There must be a finite border, so what's past the end of space?

What I don't get is that some people will say things like "yeah but if the big bang happened, then was caused it? Or what was before the big bang? That's why i think there's a god who created the universe" as if somehow they can't accept not knowing what's before so a creator solves it for them, yet they never seem to ask how their creator came into existence, or have any issue with the idea that the creator "was just there".

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you.

Muh boi, that's the entire point. It was neither an explosion, since it's not a physical reaction, and it isn't space. The BBT requires that the beginning is not only the beginning of the universe but also the beginning of space and time, since it belongs analytically to the notion of a singularity that it's the beginning of time and space.

To have some prior space or time you would need to remove the singularity from your cosmological model. There are pre–Big Bang cosmologies which attempt this, and quantum gravity models also eliminate that singularity. But whether they restore a past eternity is another question entirely.


That's not even the real mind-fuk for me. I read some time ago that out of all the possible ways a universe could exist, we only need a pocket of order the size of our solar system and the rest could be chaos. Why aren't we in that universe? Or why are we in an expanding universe, and not a contracting one? Imagine if we lived in a contracting universe and we knew at some time it would crunch every parcel of matter into oblivion. That would be a major threat to the sanity of humankind.


It seems the universe must be monumental in size, and be constantly expanding, to preserve the sanity of its inhabitants.

I mean god in the Judeo-Christian sense has only existed for about 3500 year (Judaism) and 2000 years (Chrisitianity). So if the earth is a billion years old and there were other living things prior to humans, this kind of disproves any Judeo-Christian beliefs.

I just believe there are a lot of things out there we can't comprehend, be it spiritual, esoteric, extra terrestrial or scientific. Perhaps we are just atoms living on a cell of a much larger being then us. We will never truly know.

The Big Bang is somewhat observable, but what was before the big bang cannot be said or really theorized scientifically.
