I owned a mortgage company at 28 with a net profit of $100k/mo. Granted, this was back in the 90's when you could buy a house for $80k which now would cost you $350k Wholesalers would call on my office for the first time and I would walk by them when they talked with the secretary who would then inform them that the owner just left, which was shocking because I was so young. I had a top of the line Lexus and lived in a penthouse on the water. Wouldn't go out for the night without at least $700 cash.

I had friends from back in the day, but really wasn't close to them. They were still working regular jobs like waiter, another was a valet, etc. They had nothing and all combined the little money they had they used to rent a house in not-so-nice area. When I would visit we would all go to the strip club or run up large bar tabs which I would pay because they had no money.

I remember being envious of the close friendships they had. That's when I realized that money alone does not make you happy. I used to jokingly say that money can't buy happiness but at least it lets you choose your own kind of misery. But the truth is that you need enough money but the more money that you make doesn't increase happiness. I have more now than I di then but I don't talk about money with friends or people I meet. I could afford to pay cash for a Bentley, but I choose to drive the same 2008 Cadillac CTS with 200k+ miles. The difference is that I have real friendships and real relationships. If you haven't made a lot of money then you'll have to go through this yourself, or you could listen to the wisdom of a man in his 50's.
