Misc help me not hate the house I just bought

Bought a house last month
Did several walkthroughs before purchasing
Loved the house and how quiet the area was
After moving in, I realize I'm in a direct flight path and about 100-200 planes take off directly overhead every single day
No exaggeration, literally a plane every 3 minutes or so
I heard not one single plane during any of my walkthroughs

I'm trying to be as positive as possible but it REALLY sucks because I work from home. So far my only recourse is wearing noise cancelling earbuds all day. Does anyone have any experience with blown in insulation and triple paned windows improving noise level in their home? Those are pretty much my only options until I can sell the place. Neighbors all said "you'll get used to it" but I find that very hard to believe.

I am also directly in the flight path, but not nearly that many flights.

I recommend you stop being such a ****git. I don’t even notice anymore if the TV is on to drown it out

I would have to blast my TV to cover the noise. I can even hear them when I'm in a loud shower. I've been trying to frame it positively however I can and just be stoic about it and not get upset over things out of my control. Just sucks when the main selling point was peace and quiet and then it turns out to be anything but.

Pretty sure that has to be in the disclosures in most (all?) states. You may have grounds to take legal action.

Storm windows, the reportedly bullet proof windows do cut down on the noice from airplanes. That has been my experience. Sometimes the local airport directs their planes over this area. i don't hear much when I'm in doors.

With that side, if a person goes missing in the ocean the Coast Guards search plane flys low over this area and it loud as can be. I wish they would use drones in search operations instead.

Maybe I’m used to it but it definitely isn’t that bad for me. Unless F18’s are flying directly overhead. That shakes my house

Spend 20-30k on windows? How the hell is he supposed to enjoy peaceful time in the yard?

I'm lucky maybe once a week the flight pattern goes over my yard. I think Sunday afternoons. But when I see those UPS planes I know my Amazon is on the way.

Trying to soundproof your entire house would be expensive and time consuming, best bet is to pick a couple key areas you want to be free from the noise of the airport.

When it comes to reducing and attenuating noise, standard insulation doesn't do much for something like planes flying overhead since sound is deadened by mass. Best bet is a mass loaded vinyl installed in the walls with solid core doors.

I would just sell it though TBH, sucks to take the hit on closing costs, fees, commissions but it's not worth living in a house you don't want to be in if you have other options.

Is it a large airport, or a small one?
Do you have any window treatments like blinds or drapes? Also carpet in the house and anything that dampens noise in general. That helps a little also.

I live in the landing path of a small airport down the street. I honestly don’t even really hear them. But it is mostly small aircrafts. I also grew up in the landing path right next LAX airport, then next to a freight train track lol. I think I’m immune to the sounds lol.

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. Just for the record, I did several walkthroughs that lasted around a half hour. The only thing I can think of is that we were too focused on the house and not paying attention to the planes.

And to those questioning me not knowing there was an airport nearby, I've lived in this area for most of my life and have never heard this many planes so consistently. Apparently they changed flight patterns a few years back and since then have had tons of complaints but so far no resolution to the issue aside from a select few homes getting soundproofing paid for.

I'm probably about 2-3 miles from the local regional airport. We get a handful of large aircraft fly overhead in throughout the day and several in the evening. You do get used to it, though I'm sure it would be tougher with a higher volume of aircraft.

We also have the local Air National Guard and occasionally they do training at 5:30 AM in even larger military jets. My wife is a very light sleeper and she never notices those. I'm usually awake by then during the week so that's not an issue for me.

Yeah this would have 100% have been in the disclosures

Did you look at them before signing them OP? You really don't have any legal options if you signed them

Triple pane argon-filled windows do help but they're super expensive

I would just see if you can live with it

The seller completes a disclosure basically of any known defects in the house. There's nothing about noisy neighbors or airplanes or railroad trains, or drag racing in the street, or that your neighbor runs around naked on Friday nights, etc.

This is why you should drive through the neighborhood at different times of the day/week.

I expect it depends on the state. CA seems to require it:

"The TDS form covers a broad range of topics, from structural information about your home such as a leaky roof to whether any deaths occurred on the property in the last three years.
