What are your thoughts on 'warm up' stretches & exercises?

My idea of warm up is going lighter with the weights, or jogging less fast. I seriously think all the stretching, etc is doing people more harm than good. Took a jogging class in college and one time a boy was so angry at me for not spending ten minutes stretching that he ran after me to try to stop me. Frekin Karen.

IMO completely pointless. But some swear by it. I think stretching, lighter weights, etc only serve to slightly weaken you before your actual big lift. And I never stretched before sprints and it was fine so idk. Maybe helps with those large ROM exercises? IDK. A lot of people do stretch I guess...

Interesting.

With a username like "MegaSloot" always thought your idea of a "warm up stretch" was using a dildo before taking a massive 10 incher.

this. I think folks get fanatical about it, but it seems to result in injury sometimes.

I didn't when I was younger but now I do. I can tell a big difference if I don't stretch prior to lifting now. I hate taking the time to do it but it's worth it for me. I really don't want anymore injuries.

I do light static stretching & mobility stuff between ramping up to my working weight on the first exercise.
It affects a bit on the performance, (5-10lbs ish for deadlift for example).
But atleast you wont pull your chit or mess up your joints.
My glutes cramp the fk up if i dont stretch them at all

Inderesting. Warm up in a sexual context ... I think that happens in my head mostly.

I rotate my arms and hang from a bar to stretch my shoulders but that's about it. Then, I start with the lightest weight (like just the bar) and then continue to do sets with progressively heavier weights until my first actual set is with the max weight that I can do for 4-6 reps. Then I drop set.

Stretching is done at night before bed to help with jiu-jitsu. I agree stretching before the workout is unnecessary.

This. Progressive warm up is the way to go. Before bed I'll foam roll a little, and stretch in the shower. Have you ever seen a cheetah warm up before it chases a gazelle?

I do a 3-5 min warm up. Just a collection of active mobility movements, any stretches are only held for 15 seconds max. I usually follow this by 1-2 warm up sets on my first compound lift for each muscle group with minimal rest in between. Anecdotally, I've noticed it does reduce injury risk fairly significantly for me and seems to improve my performance. Takes up like 10 mins max of the entire routine, feels worth it. Never bother stretching when I'm done though.

I don't enjoy stretching. It only tires me out. I do like to warm up though before some exercise.

I saw one in a Playboy mag I think that had a disappointed looking sloot in a castle that was being invaded and it said "What do you mean you're ONLY here to pillage?"

I feel like I have to start stretching now that I'm old but I never did before. I just started with lighter weights in the beginning when I lifted but I see older people stretch before tennis.

However, when I was coaching tennis we did dynamic stretching and not static stretching. Plus you need to do a little cardio first to warm up your muscles before stretching, otherwise when you stretch cold muscles you risk injury.

I usually also do just lighter weight of the exercise I'm doing. Helps to make sure my form is dialed in as well.

I do stretch beforehand a good bit when it's something that needs mobility of course. And maybe afterwards if I'm feeling tight. If I feel like I really need to stretch a target muscle before its exercise (like quads before squats), that's almost never a good sign, and I should take it lighter that day.

Static stretching inhibits the stretch reflex and are shown to temporarily decrease muscle force production.

Warming up, on the other hand, is actually beneficial and can be accomplished through very low intensity movement to increase tissue temperature which improves extensibility, increase blood flow, and promote optimal motor unit recruitment.

Dynamic stretching is preferable to static prior to exertion.

I usually just to some dynamic stretching and a few light sets and work up to my working sets and by then I’m properly warmed up. Maybe run a quarter mile or do some jumping jacks or some other type of cardio.

I do a 1-2 sets with the bar for 5-8 reps, to make sure everything is working ok. Then 135 for 5, 185 for 3, then sets of 1 until I reach my working weight. I’m also in my 50s and had 4 hip operations. I start my workouts with squats and feel the need for the warm ups, especially to make sure I’m hitting depth.

I think you're probably pretty stupid if you're in your mid-30's, have been on this site for 6+ years, and you still haven't figured out the concepts of stretches and warm up excercises.

Dynamic stretching is beneficial. It prepares the muscle(s) to be stressed to their eccentric and concentric movements prior to the load phase.

Static stretching is beneficial after the workout to assist in flushing acid lactic build up in the muscle.

I don't warm up so much as kick the tires.

I will start off lighter and work up, checking for any tightness, niggles etc. I basically check that I'm firing on all cylinders before I floor it.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......

It’s a waste of time, does absolutely nothing at all

If you’re going to squat, just phucking squat. Stopped stretching years ago and have continued to lift heavy, with no injuries

I do stretches since they make me feel more limber and just make me feel better overall before I begin any exercise. I also do some morning stretches for a couple minutes after I get out of bed. A few key areas feel tight so I get less discomfort after I do them.

Well animals don't really spend much time in positions that are detrimental to their physiology, so they wouldn't need to. I know I feel bound up and tight just getting out of bed in ybr morning. For what it's worth if you've ever had a dog or cat guaranteed you have seen them stretch their limbs a bit
