The only way you’d ever get the magic back would be some crazy VR mmo.

People now realize starting an MMO is committing to going full rotter mode if you ever want to see the good parts of the game. The only reason games like Runescape and WoW are still popular is because they're largely full of the same people who were rotting back then but haven't learned.

i don't think it will ever be as popular as before, this generation + generation coming up is the "now" generation. born into wireless high speed internet, instant streaming of movies/tv shows, instant gaming with little to no load times..

like others said, in order to succeed in an mmorpg you gotta rot as you enter mid tier level you spend 8 hours of wacking mobs to gain a level up and then you reach a point where you spend 3 days worth of playing to level up, then it turns into a week just to level up.

its a grind fest of wacking mobs, and that doesn't even include you searching for loot + clan activities.

you pretty much make it your life in order to play, meanwhile the "now" generation can instantly load into any other game kill something without all that grind.

On the contrary, we are also in the loner generation. If you haven't been paying attention, zoomers were spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on NFT's to make money and to also be apart of a "community"

Lots of zoomers are solo queuing games because they don't have friends.

I could see MMO's make a resurgence due to the social aspect and also for the grind reward. MMO's fell out in 2010+ it seems like in favor of short burst arena shooters, but it feels like those are falling out too along with battle royales.

When you think about it, survival games like ARK and Rust are what I would consider a variation of the MMO genre and they are still pretty popular despite how old they are and having some pretty chit developers. I think the market is ready for another one. New world had like 1m people trying to play the first week but they couldnt hold the hype as they basically gutted the game for the WoW formula. You could say zoomers are the "now" generation, but I was night shift in a clan full of zoomers in ARK and those autists would grind like no other. If someone can drop an MMO that can be rewarding for both the sweat and the casual, they would be able to print money. New World seemed like it was almost there with the faction/territory system and wars but it needed some more work.

A grind isn't necessarily the problem, but stale gameplay loops are. Farming iron in New World for 3 hours isn't the same as farming iron in ARK for 3 hours. One is high risk, high reward. The other is just a low risk, low reward time slog. If a new MMO is going to drop, they have to ditch things that aren't working and add things that are working and are fun in other games.

What glory? MMOs have always been largely experimental. Back in the 90s, devs had no idea wtf they were doing and they mostly succeeded because it was something new and fresh. Remember when WoW was considered "casual" and openly mocked by Everquest and Asheron's Call players? Wow succeeded because it had a better ui and didn't waste your time like the previous MMOs.

Brb no more losing levels or items upon death. Brb flight path mechanics that made traveling much easier and the ability to ride mounts the moment you reached level 40 (and could afford it). Raids were much easier to get into and bosses didn't take hours or days to fight and beat. Despite all of this, boomers still insist that the older MMOs were better, which is pretty laughable. The glory days of MMOs depends if you prefer WoW over older MMORPGs.

I think this is somewhat accurate.

True degens do nothing but play these games all day, forgoing real life importance, like relationships, job, exercise. But I will say to this day that multi-tasking Runescape, which has a lot of AFK components, has made studying for my degree and certifications more bearable. I've exhausted TF out of this game though, so I kind of don't look forward to the next certification I'm studying for srs... it'll be painful unless I find something else similarly as AFK to multi-task. I have multiple thousands of hours on RS2/OSRS/RS3 combined, but some of those thousands involved feeding me dopamine while getting chit done to progress my studies and career.

I think we're moving towards "MMO" integration in a lot of online games as a whole though. Diablo 4 is a decent example, it's never a full-fledged MMO, but the towns in the game, and the open world aspect, makes it feel like one. Expect more "MMO-like" hubs, open world zone clusters, and things like that in a lot of games to come.

the league of legends mmo has the only chance really

- the universe needs to enable casual understanding of the lorebefore the game launches. in warcraft, there was warcraft 1,2,3,expansion that gave a huge amount of people an understanding of orcs vs humans, paladins, arthas, etc. league of legends has like 50m-100m players worldwide with a 10/10 netflix show for people who don't play the game
- literally every single mmo didn't have that potential other than star wars. Guild wars? too niche. final fantasy? too niche. the old republic? it could have been the "wow killer" if a competent studio made it. everybody tried it then quit, but everybody tried it so i think the base desire for a good mmo still exists

I used to love MMO's. I would consider getting back into one and rotting if it was fun enough. Just haven't found any that have sucked me in like DAOC, WoW, or Star Wars Galaxies.

I'm keeping an eye on the future MMO Ashes of Creation though. I think there is potential there.

Are the communities in MMO's still strong? That was the biggest perk back then. Old school WoW was misc for me before I had misc.

I played classic WoW for a bit, but the chatting was so much less frequent that I got bored.

WoW Classic has a large community, particularly during the beginning of each "Classic Expansion" release. But just keep in mind, Blizzard went woke, and the main people who play are elitist af. If you expect to be a casual, even the "semi hardcore" guilds are gonna judge you. If you expect to chat like you're in the misc, you'll be muted/banned often.

MMOs are a risky business model unless you go the pay to win route so 1% of the player base can make up 99% of your revenues like in asian titles.

The problem we are facing right now are:

1. The main MMO crowd got older, they have kids, families, and don't game as much.
2. The remaining crowd still actively playing MMOs is too small and scattered into many titles, and WoW purists will never play your game as much as they chit on WoW all year long.
3. The new generation of gamers are into short attention span zoomer games like Warzone, battle royale games or competitive FPS games like CS GO or valorant. They don't see the value of grinding an MMO for months or years and they have nothing to aspire to by doing so (No pro scene, no major tournaments, just gimmicky endgame content that can be repeated indefinitely and obnoxious gear progression).
4. PvP is always a problem balancing wise so the competitive crowd of MMOs is a small niche community, even in today's WoW it's limited.
5. Most of those that remain playing retail and classic are woke redditors, furries and troons who will get you banned the minute you say something that's not politically correct and those people are totally disconnected from the MMO genre and simply play to escape their miserable existence.

Riot MMO might bring some of the hype back into the genre but expect it to be a broken mess like LoL and Valorant were at launch.

Only if they made a darksouls skill based mmo. Retarded button mashing games are boring.

A boss fight where you don't need real party dynamics where everyone is self sufficient but can work together to take down chunky health pools is fun.

You rarely see random chats in the world like before, and everything is pretty much pay to play. No pug raids, unless you're paying for gear or do too much dps to need any of the gear. Lots of gold farmers and bots

Maybe WoW and things like that, but has the market just shifted to mobile games now? Clash of Clans, for example, is ever expanding.

I saw some mod of a 12 man Elden Ring free for all Boss Rush mode the other day.

This is probably the only way to move forward for MMORPG. Everyone's sick of the generic MMORPG gameplay template we've had for damn near 30 years. We NEED an Action MMORPG like that Elden Ring mod.

Traditional MMORPG are massive time sink. You need to literally go into incel rotter mode just to get endgame gear to face endgame content. We need to do away with this, and instead replace it with a skill based system. An MMORPG where a group of skilled players can beat endgame content and doesn't require everyone to have been playing for thousands of hours to acquire rare loot just to have the stats to tackle endgame content, is the way forward. Skill > timesink.

Obviously, there should still be loot system to incentivize tackling endgame. But the loot should largely be for fashion/build, and not an absolute must to win like 99% of games now.

A FromSoft MMOA(ction)RPG is the future and would fkn sell like crazy.

Yeah would be great if the boss juiced up depending on how many attackers, or just split into mirror bosses for a giant brawl. Computers are getting more powerful so that kind of stuff is possible.

Community driven games (not combat) were what made TRUE sandbox MMOs like SWG special and that is never coming back.

WoW only ever got popular because it was building off the backstory of the RTS franchise.

MMOs are dead forever now, and probably for the better

Just started Black Desert Online since I got it free awhile ago. Doesn’t seem bad so far. They have seasonal servers that allow you to gear and level up easily.

No, they'll never be the same/return to their former glory.

My reasoning is that devs over-complicated things, theorycrafting, ****ty communities, and ultimately the game being played on 'guides' instead of actually playing/learning the game caused the downhill of this genre. Thanks interwebz
