Gen Z really does have a work ethic problem

https://jeanmtwenge.substack.com/p/g...e-a-work-ethic

"Up until a few years ago, the work ethic news was positive for Gen Z (those born 1995-2012, and 18 years old 2013-2030). After declining from Boomers to Millennials, work ethic made a comeback among Gen Z 18-year-olds in the 2010s.

Until it didn’t. The number of 18-year-olds who said they wanted to do their best in their job “even if this sometimes means working overtime” suddenly plummeted in 2021 and 2022 (see Figure 1).In early 2020, 54% of 18-year-olds said they were willing to work overtime. By 2022, it was 36%. That’s a (relative) drop of 33% in just two years. It’s also an all-time low in the 46-year history of the survey."

"I recently learned about this term called quiet quitting, where you're not outright quitting your job, but you're quitting the idea of going above and beyond," Khan says. "You're still performing your duties, but you're no longer subscribing to the hustle culture mentality that work has to be your life. The reality is it's not —and your worth as a person is not defined by your labor."

Sadly, this. They know the game is rigged and working your ass off and hoping to get into the top 1% is a losing battle

it's boomer mentality that all you need is gumption and you can work your way up to president of the company. there are a few boomers in my extended family that have shut-in rotter early 20s kids and they think that said kids can just walk into some high-paying job like a medical lab and get a job just because they did well in science class in HS.

like, boomer, tell me your lives were easy without outright telling me if that's what you believe.

This. Purpose drives work ethic. Goals drive work ethic.

Imagine being a boomer and trying to push work ethic on a generation to get financially anally fisted and less than all previous generations. They're literally putting young generations into major debt, trying to make these kids work meaningless jobs for low pay, and then trying to cash out their over inflated assets to younger generations as the final curb stomp to the financial future of the younger generations.

Then they'll take their money to buy scratch offs and go to the casino and get mad when their families never visit them when they are put into an old people home for 8k a month to leave them penniless at death.

But but but...these young kids just don't have work ethic! Oh yea? Who raised them? Who fukked over their future? The very people complaining about them!!!! Congrats guys, your selfishness created the very problems you're now complaining about!

Lol I feel like most of the miscers who complain about peoples' work ethic have the highest post counts per day averages on here and are LARPing as CEOs or something. I have a high-paying job and a high net worth and the grind realistically isn't worth it for most people. The reality is the really big payday comes at the Executive level and there's chitloads of politics that go into who gets that seat. It's not some meritocracy based on "hard work".

Further, even if you make that seat, your responsibilities/stress are through the roof. There's a reason why a lot of the people at the top of the career ladder are some combo of alcoholics, drug addicts, divorced, clinically depressed, out of shape, sociopaths, etc. The people legitimately pulling themselves up by their bootstraps are grinding their dick off even when they make it to the top. They're not weirdos making thousands of posts on the misc. My clients are investment bankers/private equity guys (aka the top of the food chain) and believe me when I say those guys do not have any time to enjoy whatever paychecks they're making.

I do agree Gen Z has a lot of issues and I'm curious to see how they're going to handle the upcoming chitstorm given how they're already depressed despite the relatively good times we've had since they became adults. I do also though lol at miscers acting like there aren't very big problems with the corporate world and that there aren't legitimately reasons why people are feeling the way they are.

Well said.

No more incentives to work hard and not only economically btw. Also internet made it more clear than ever how rigged the game is and how fooked the younger generations are.

I have 7 employees in the Philippines all Gen Zers. Typhoon Rai decimated their towns December a couple years ago. One of them sent me a video. It looked like third world construction of toppled huts. Got them a generator and now they are among the wealthiest Filipinos in Cebu and Iloilo cities.

My army of Filipinos will outwork Gen Zers here who spend the majority of their time playing video games, watching netflix and porn.

How is it boomers fault? I get they raised them but at the end of the day they did their best to raise them. It’s not like they enforced bad habits and say stuff like “yea son, just play video games and rot. Don’t try”. Actually, the opposite is true.

We’re all a product of our environment and we all work to the best of our abilities under the tools and circumstances we were given.

Personally I think it's great.

They realize, correctly, that working does not give them an advantage in the current market.

They believe their time is more valuable than the offers they're getting

They literally would rather not work than work. That's capitalism.

Make it worth their while, and they'll work. Easy

I mean, I don't f*cking want to work either to be honest.

I'm finally making 200K/yr and suddenly it's like 400k is the mark of a champion.

All sh*ts double/triple price, my pay caught the standard 3% cost of living.

It's like....bro if I was entering the workforce and had to pay $5K for a 95 Honda accord and $5 a gallon to get to work...why would I do that?

Boomers are the epitome of narcissists. They always had it harder, always worked harder, and despise their kids. They let schools raise their kids and are shocked when buying kids "stuff" didn't make them respect them and bend at their knee to praise their parents. Boomers didn't teach their kids anything, but were the first to criticize their kids for not knowing stuff. Didn't teach them how to work with their hands, didn't teach them skills for the future, pushed their kids into nearly unpayable high interest student loans so they can feel socially validated that their kid is "educated," then kick their kids out and tell them that they don't work hard enough like they did. These are the people that bought their houses for 60k and selling them for 500k and saying millenials and genz are just lazy and have it easier then when they had 18% interest rates. They hold onto all the top high paying positions and aren't retiring.

Kids despise their parents for a reason. It didn't just fall out of the sky. schools and technology raised kids. Gen X is part of this too, obviously. Boomers are universally hated because they sacrificed their kids futures so they can make more money and get more stuff. Now you are seeing the fruition of it. Our society is know by it's fruits. The boomers planted poison fruits.

Putting this in perspective as a widespread psychological phenomenon.

When we got machines that doubled work efficiency people didn’t get to work half hours. Half of them got fired. Continue the analogy along the evolution of growth of technology.

Eventually when we hit people’s breaking point with overwork compared to the sector of society benefiting from their labor, there needs to be a correction or the system will fall apart from complete lack of any willing work force. This is the correction, in a sedated cucked and passive manner. Basically optimal for continued advancement. Mostly with utilizing coping mechanisms, medications etc.. and quiet quitters are much less effective at actually turning off the factory lights then say, labor strikes and occupy wallstreet type stuff.

How does "checking out" (including the plummeting amount of sex Gen Z have compared to Millennials, I have posted data on this many times) show that they "understand the game" better? Time and time again folks here use the phrase "boomer" - I'm, e.g., a Millennial, as is my lovely wife. How can a worse life show that they "understand the game" better? It doesn't, in fact it shows they don't know how to play.

If you were born in 85, that's on you. If the game is 'rigged', the mental flaw you present here is that 'getting into the top 1%' is 'needed' to have done well in the game. Household income for the top 1% is over 600k p.a. That's even beyond MISC claims, and of the millionaires here I have never seen one say 'you need to earn 500k+ to have done well in the game.'

Fallacies checked.

Then they can continue to rot, living at home with mommy, not getting any pussy, and at 35 years old, they'll still be making excuses why their life sucks.

Then their mommy dies, and suddenly they have to start paying bills, except they can't, then they're evicted and bitch on the internet how they'll soon be homeless....

Its manipulation by the elites. The elites taught everyone under 40 to hate their middle class parents. They want infighting amongst the peasants so that nobody blames them.

Yeah go be mad at your tradie dad because he bought a house for 70k in the 90s when he made 30k a year and paid it off in 10 years. Its his fault that the world is chit right now not the elites who set policy and are literally above the law and face no repercussions for taking foreign bribes or insider stock trading, on and on.

Household income for the top 1% is over 600k p.a. That's even beyond MISC claims, and of the millionaires here I have never seen one say 'you need to earn 500k+ to have done well in the game.'

Fallacies checked.
bruh being in the top 1% only happens through nepotism...are you dumb? unless you are an elon musk or a mark suckaberg you arent getting there alone. And yes being happy is what gen-z claims as "being there" with the delusions of what they see on tik-tok and youtube

Younger people have bad work ethic generally speaking.

The only statitstic is that younger people are taking longer to get into the workforce.
