Did the programming thread get deleted (theory816)?
Tf eh?
Anyway, I thought it was an interesting subject and welcome everyone to keep contributing here.
I've been working in industrial maintenance for the past 6 months and the whole process of getting a series of machines to work together to accomplish a task (actually 100s of little tasks organized toward an outcome) is insanely interesting. Limit switches, photoeyes all reporting back, PLC firing commands based on info. I'm considering getting in the PLC side.
Anyway, I thought it was an interesting subject and welcome everyone to keep contributing here.

To answer the question:
Probably analyze the distribution of the length data and place your medium size at the mean. Then the question is what is the opportunity cost of providing two extra sizes in production. It boils down to your best seller being the mean value and then assigning values to the distribution above and below the mean. You can group these remaining data points and their assigned value by the remaining size options and determine if offering option 2 yields more value than option 1.
To answer the question:

I get that such a vague question is meant to allow you to prove you're knowledgeable and capable of analyzing a problem from several angles but meh, I don't like it, just ask me to find the second largest int in a binary tree or something.

With humans we know that the shoe must fit perfectly, with dogs it's not such a huge deal. Do people want to choose quickly ? Or are most dog owners really obsessed with details and would like to perfectly fit the size?
So in the end the main problem here is testing out both solutions on a smaller scale in the form of A/B testing in various areas - cork sniffers in California would probably care more about perfectly fitting a dog shoe - with various populations.
So ... in the end the "sample size" predicate is not really important imo in itself. Itcouldbe important in knowing what those sizes map to in units.

Although on a second thought if it's anything like humans there's no actual average but an even distribution across the "normal" range so in this case it makes sense to have it more granular, from a technical point of view. And then if you aggregate the data in chunks by testing various deltas ... you might see that dogs mostly come in 5 sizes with a delta of 0.5cm. But then you have different breeds and other things and it gets complicated quickly. Therefore, it's best to spend most of the money on smart marketing and become the Gucci of dog shoes. Speculate sizes and people will still buy it because of the brand regardless of the actual fit. Dog shoes are stupid anyways.

I'm close to retirement, and I've realized the distance to retirement is measured in dollars instead years, so I suck it up. If I was earlier in my career I'm not sure I would put up with it.
Salaries rapidly increased about a year and a half ago. Two years ago I was making 105K base with a yearly total of probably 120K.
