Checked credit score this morning

Having to change mobile phone carrier and the application for staled due to an "error" and I was told I'd be contacted to discuss - so jumped onto the credit check website to see where I was at.

Yeah, they had an issue with the fact I've got too many "credit" products - phone contract, internet contract, investment loan, plus a Mastercard and Amex card.

Chopped the Mastercard limit from $30k to $10k because it's paid to $0 every month anyway which unlocked more borrowing capacity for the investment property but the Amex has no limit which may affect things even though In running between $6k and $10k per month through it every month and it's always paid to $0 end of month.

Cell carrier was an error on their side when I was trying to switch from the other so I checked my credit score to see if that's was throwing up anything unusual.

10% of your credit score is length of credit history. In HS you would have scored poorly on that - there's 85 points right there.

35% of your score is payment history and goes back 10 years for good credit and only 7 for bad credit . In HS you would have scored low on this too. That's 297.5 points there.

10% of your score is new credit. Inquiries stay on your report for 2 years but only count negatively on your score for one year. That's 85 points.

30% of your score is amounts owed. If a balance is carried on a card, then you score poorly the higher the balance is to your credit limit. That's 255 points.

15% is types of credit That's 127.5 points.

Owned a mortgage company from 1996 to 2008 and looked at thousands of reports. The ones who have the highest score are really old people who have high credit limits and zero balances on their cards.

For any Miscers who are credit challenged but know someone who has excellent credit then have them add you to a couple of their cards with zero balances, perfect payment history, and high credit limits. They don't have to give you an actual card. When the card comes in, have them keep it. A month or so later, when your credit report is run, you have 2 credit cards with $20k limits and zero balances going back to whenever they opened the account. Credit reports and scores are put together on the fly, meaning there is no actual credit file for someone.

I strongly recommend the book: "Credit Reports and Credit Scores: How the system reall works, What you can do" by Hendricks.

Yes, lowering your credit limit is bad for your score. What you want is a high credit limit and low balance. This way it doesn't look like you are about to file bankruptcy.
