Why do so many look so desperate?

Folks look like they are at their limit. Even in a Hermes shop people look like they've checked out.

What is so wrong with peoples' lives?

Because they don't realize that the only hope is in escaping this world through faith in Jesus Christ. Nothing anyone can try to fill their heart with will suffice. The fruits of the Spirit and love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, forbearance, and self control. Without God you have none of that.

But only some (though a lot) walk down the street looking defeated. Broken shells of a human being. It's prolific srs.

Its the look people get when they are lied to all the time.
"To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

We're headed into year 3 of a tightening economic cycle.

People are essentially the "frog in the pot", and the water is starting to get really warm. All excitement is gone from the average person's life.

When was the last time you went out and saw people truly letting loose and going crazy? I haven't seen it in a few years now(at least in the US).

However, I wouldn't ever gauge economic health by how people in the Hermes store look. Those people have been dead inside for many years already.

You think that "kindness", "goodness", and "self-control" are characteristic of Christianity? Off to History_101 with you.

I saw it at a speakeasy in LES a few months ago. Legit buying drinks for each other, and the bartender.

I only wear Hermes ties, it is my thing. The salespersons in London used to be so friendly, heck even in an airport like Frankfurt.

But from there to here (NYC) folks just seem so dead inside.

For most people, there's very little to look forward to. You have to work your ass off to afford your life, or can't anymore. Lots of people are struggling with debt, mental health issues are rampant thanks to things like social media and everyone is lashing out against each other over stupid crap like politics.

And it's not like the future looks bright, if anything people know it's only going to get worse. I'd be willing to bet if things like suicide pods existed they would be very, very busy.

they have forgotten that true happiness and more importantly contentment cannot be bought
it has to be earned through self fulfilment and sacrifice

they are living shallow materialistic lives that will only end in despair

Probably because you likely scoffed at them and announced yourself as their superior. How are they supposed to feel good after that?

I've bought the same grocery basics since college 10 years ago.

In college it would be $45-50.

Those same basics now cost me $130

You think anyone who claims to be a Christian is really a Christian?

Matt 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

This. My god do i feel for those who missed this boat.

The gates are shut now, but during that time period i was able to leap frog my way from the peasantry into a fullfilling middle class career.

There had been a vaccume after all those people retired or died of covid and while many couldnt hack it, some did, like myself.

But my god is it a BAD BAD time to be poor. Hell i'm making what i considered great money just 4 years ago and it feels like i'm just living a normal life, nothing special really.

No matter what you hold dear in life social media has introduced you to a few thousand people who will gleefully shred it apart. I think it leaves people feeling unmoored. What an I meant to take pleasure from or seek strength in when everything is a problem for somebody else. Add in financial woes & mass migration. Crime and a debased culture. People no longer feel safe and at home in the world. Everything feels more difficult and complicated for them. Personally, if I had money I’d live a quiet rustic life. No tv or internet. Shut the world out. A tree is still a tree, a blue sky is still a blue sky. I remember reading once that Johnny Depp spent a year in the gardens of his French château just watching the plants and flowers grow. I’d do that.

I know someone with (he says) depression, and that if he was going out with some lingering illness he'd use a 'suicide pod'. Had never heard of this thing until last year, and your post reminded me of that.

Most people are making 40K a year, doping themselves with opioids, and waiting to die.

We’ve reached peak civilization. There’s not much left
