Once you learn sales you’ll never go hungry. You earn based off what work you put in and don’t really have a ceiling which is nice

It’s hard though and you need to be able to handle rejection and spiky income especially in the beginning

I was a GNC salesman over 20 years ago. If you don't mind lying to earn a commission, it sucked.

This is why i'm motivated, i've seen the commissions could be pretty sweet. It's about the work you put in and of course it's gonna be hard especially dealing with the rejection but with more experience one should be able to handle objections better. What type of sales have you been in specifically?

Yes I’m in sales.

First two years I just tried to out work everyone. I was making pretty good money but working really hard to get the customer to buy. After that I started to really learn my product and mellowed out a bunch. Now it doesn’t even feel like sales any more, I basically feel like I’m just a person that handles the logistics of getting what they want and it’s a lot easier and I make more money.

Sales isn’t for everybody. Something like 99% of salesman don’t last a full year of whatever company they’re working with.

I think the problem with most salesman is that they can’t find a way to remove themselves and their commission from the sale and can only think selfishly. I try to remove myself from the situation and just get the customer what they want without looking like I have any skin in the game.

my son was selling firearms in a big outdoor store. He literally loved it. He was in college for his engineering licence, but, from his own words, if pay in sales was more decent he would never do anything else.

It was a hit, his passion for target shooting and firearms, his knowledge of all technical details and auditory to listen to his blubbering. All combined in one.

Been in sales 20 years now
Good money
Made over 200k 9 of those years
Over 300k 7 years
Under 100k 3 years

I would recommend residual sales vs hunter role

Residual means you make the initial sale and you keep selling to that outlet
Hunter sales can be more lucrative , but it’s constant hunting

Medical devices, wholesale insurance are residual sales

This is a great reply thanks. You gotta put the reps and work in to get better. That's what I have thought myself really knowing my products that i'm selling and that itself will aid me. My manager just tells me to focus on selling.

Those are great numbers, numbers I strive to make one day. Right now i'm a hunter role. Residual sales sounds badass, just keep selling to the same source over and over. 20 years is a long time, you must be very knowledgeable in the field. What pieces of advice would you give to a beginner in sales that has a likeable personality and is a people person? I still can't get over some objections. But I am able to set appointments

I worked face to face sales.

I made a chit ton of money. My boss was an absolute POS, jerk, who had no ability to coach or help, he was a true bully.

Stress was high, pay was high and the competition was cut throat.

Best sales people were legit psycho paths and socio-path types, ded srs. If you could give a chit about stealing and taking everything and believe you deserve it, it is for you. Best salesman was a guy who would slit your throat and tell you that you owe him a favor while you bleed out and he is angry you dirtied his knife. And he would be truly upset you didn't get him more money.

Hard to explain.

Be cut throat or get walked over. Period.

There's a bunch of tiktok/twitter accounts teaching how to skip the sales geek and getting wholesale prices now and they are only growing.

You need to have people skills.
As in figure out very quickly if you can sell them and how.

It’s like dating, you can pick up signals if people want to buy something.

I always look at what car people drive.
If it’s second hand they might be looking for a deal.
If it’s brand new then they might be interested in extra options and extended warranty.

Just make sure to close the deal.
Once you or the customer leaves it’s over most of the time.

When I used to work in customer service people would actually look for me by name or be very happy I was helping them. But of course sales goes far beyond that. The more reps put in the more experience one gets. In the city I live we have a bunch of homes that hve old ass evaporative coolers , so I can use pain points of intense heat to sell them hvac units. I've never worked sales but my girlfriend does very well running a cyber sales team. She makes 7 figures but I don't think I would want her job srs. The amount of pressure to make deals and cut throat nature of the company wouldn't be worth it imo. I'm sure not all sales jobs are that high stakes though, her team is selling like 9 figures a year.

I've worked in sales for a large gym franchise.

It was long 10 hour days, with bad work-life balance. Lots of monotonous repetition and a lot of rejection/difficult, objecting people andveryperemptory management.

You can make decent money in commission, but commission is unreliable in many positions unless you're charismatic and have good gifts of persuasion. Or you get lucky and push a product many people want or need anyway. Not knowing when your next pay check is coming or if you'll even get one at all (beyond the crappy base you get), is very stressful.

Sales quotas and KPIs are often unreasonable and management don't care. This leads to sales people resorting to lies and misrepresentation just to make quota. Even for very prosocial extroverts it can be exhausting.

Plus, it attracts a particular personality type. Snake-oily, smug, arrogant, double-talking, unctuous sycophantic shifty fuks and I absolutely hate those people.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

I've worked sales and it's not for me. The type of stuff that people will do to you behind your back if you're doing better than they are is insane.
