Incredible PS5 Pro ray tracing performance leaks
Take my money
Edit: Full video discussing document for super nerds:
The PS5 Pro appears to be a massive improvement vs the PS5 with a GPU that could bring an over 3x TFLOP increase in addition to a whopping 2 to 4 times better ray racing performance according to the latest leak from Moore’s Law Is Dead. The leak also reveals key details regarding the PS5 Pro’s custom image upscaling tech.
Sony is rumored to release the PS5 Pro later this year, potentially in September, with a big performance improvement over the base PS5. So far, leaks have alleged that the PS5 Pro features an 8-core Zen 2 CPU, up to a 30 WGP (60 CU) GPU, 16 GB of memory running at 18 Gbps, and a 256-bit wide memory bus.
Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID) has now published a new PS5 Pro leak video that reveals incredible details about the GPU, machine learning, and Sony’s custom upscaling tech.
PS5 Pro GPU with up to 4x faster ray tracing
MLID presents a document in the video which lists “Higher GPU performance” as one of the three main selling points of the PS5 Pro (codenamed “Trinity”). The PS5 Pro’s GPU is allegedly “larger” and brings a 45% boost in performance over the standard PS5. While this proposed performance increase is sizeable, it is quite a bit less than a previous report which put the number at 50-60%.
Furthermore, MLID reports that the PS5 Pro GPU is anywhere from 2 to 4 times better at ray tracing than the base PS5 (Available on Amazon). This is in line with a leak from December 2023 which alleged more than 2x the improvement. Interestingly, if the PS5 Pro has ray tracing that is more than two times as fast as the regular PS5, the PS5 Pro might not have a simple RDNA 3 or 3.5 GPU as has been leaked.
Consider this, the RX 7900 XTX, the fastest RDNA 3 GPU on the market, is only 36% faster than the RDNA 2-based RX 6900 XT per TechPowerUP’s testing of RT at 4K. Since the PS5 features an RDNA 2 GPU, the purported PS5 Pro with an RDNA 3 board would bring nowhere near the performance of the leaked numbers unless it is packing some RT improvements not seen on regular RDNA 3 cards. This could exactly be the case as a past rumor suggested that the PS5 Pro’s GPU packs some RT tech from RDNA 4.
Moving on, MLID also reports that the console’s GPU boasts 300 TOPs of 8-bit Integer machine learning and 67 TFLOPs of 16-bit or 33.5 TFLOPs of 32-bit Floating Point performance. As a reference, the base PS5 and Xbox Series X (Buy it on Amazon) are rated for 10.28 and 12 TFLOPs respectively.
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)
The PS5 Pro is rumored to employ a custom DLSS-like tech for upscaling. MLID suggests that the tech is called “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” and is a “Temporal Anti-aliasing Upscale” that is accelerated with machine learning. The upscaler supports a maximum resolution of 4K with support for higher resolutions reportedly on the cards for future versions.
Per the document obtained by MLID, PSSR is very similar to DLSS and FSR in its input requirements, supports full HDR, and works with dynamic resolution. Moreover, the upscaler apparently doesn’t require training on a per-game basis matching DLSS.
When it comes to resource requirements, PSSR supposedly needs 250 MB of memory and 2 ms to upscale a 1080p input to 4K. However, this running time can change in the future as optimizations are underway.
Long story short, GPU performance and upscaling could be the killer weapons of the PS5 Pro. This could allow Sony to market the console as a 4K beast that can not only do incredible ray tracing but also do it at high frame rates.
While all of it sounds amazing and we are definitely excited to know more, it is important to take the information with a grain of salt.

Does consoles utilize FSR 3? If not, I think that would be a massive game changer without the need for more power with cost reduction as well

Ray tracing lol who actually gives a chit about it. Just bump up the fuggin framerates and stop having games drop to 720p with upscaling.
All this article says to me is that games will still require upscaling magic to play games comfortably at 4k

When it comes to 3rd party titles though like FF16 and Jedi Survivor, having those dedicated RT cores can take load off the GPU and allow it to render higher resolutions before upscaling. If this leak is to be believed I'm seeing roughly 16.5 Teraflops of GPU power, coupled with less load from RT and their PSSR upscaler. This could make a significant impact on the resolution and clarity of games. It's probably the smartest way to go vs raw gpu power.

If I had to take a wild guess it's looking like a 7800XT plus extra bells and whistles from Sony. Based on that I won't be surprised if this thing is $700 or more lol

Who gives a fk. 4 good games to play in the entire generation.

95% of the games on ps5 are just ps4 games at a higher resolution. they havent even made any games to target the current gen as a baseline

And I remember thinking to myself…if this is what we start with, imagine what we will continue to see as the years go by. So exciting to think about.
And now here we are today. Lol. Games are blurry, buggy, low res, pop-in, can't hold consistent frames etc. They added all this new tech which is supposed to make games look prettier, yet the end result is them looking fuking uglier so what's the point? Only so you can throw in a bunch of cool sounding buzz words in your ads?

Not gonna lie ray tracing is king for me, rather have that than 16327fps, but thats just me.
Not gonna lie the PS5 is the biggest bust if a Pro is really coming, buying one as launch was a rip off

As several others have already said, who the fuk cares.
Leaps in tech/hardware used to mean something. It meant different games, bigger games, better games, more complex games, etc.
Now it means slightly better shadows when the light source moves around the room, or some chit.
I think the reaction to the generation that follows on from PS5/Series X (no word of a lie here, I just had to google the name of the latest gen Xbox as I genuinely can never remember it; that’s how forgettable this chit is) is going to be very interesting, cos I reckon even mindless NPCs will clock that they’re paying lots of money for basically nothing.
That said, plenty of people go out and get the latest iPhone every time a new one is released, so I dunno.

Why do we need a pro console again?
We have barely any current PS5 exclusives that have made full use of the PS5's capabilities.
Any games that do release are releasing in a pitiful state — And I suspect more of this is to do with actual dev budget/manpower/skill and lack of optimization.
Also can we stop putting rtx on a pedestal … half the time the implementation on consoles are just ass and tank performance. There are so few games that actually utilize rtx properly while giving proper performance at all modes.
I mean I'll still buy this day one for increased performance … but let these current gen consoles breathe ffs.
If devs and sony at least came out and said that current gen consoles aren't really powerful enough then I could stomach the need for a pro, but that'd be horrible business sense lol.

The bad news is 45% raster increase isn’t fantastic.
The good news is the ray tracing performance increase is fantastic. So games like spiderman 2 and ratchet should see big benefits.

Yeah, but my point still stands. This extra power is just for the sole reason of dev's bruteforcing their performance with the extra overhead because they're lazy/have no time/manpower/budget. There's no proper optimization being done. It's one of the reasons why pc gets some chitty ass ports and then just rely on stronger hardware to try and make up at least some barely sort of acceptable performance.
There's a reason why a game like Metro runs GI RTX flawlessly on PC and then you have Gotham Knights which ran like chit even on high end hardware.
Look at Cyberpunk/BG3 …. 2 games that benefited from being optimized to hell and back.
Dev's have barely used PS5 to its full potential and already they're trying to add in a different sku.

With those dedicated RT cores, it means that the GPU+45% can wholly focus on producing a much higher internal resolution before upscaling. Add to that the custom Sony AI upscaling which should be more of a rival to DLSS and we can see significant image clarity in performance modes. And this can happen without any patch work done to the game.

Having so many games with RT, dynamic resolutions and so many graphic modes (many of which even have unlocked resolution modes) shows future proofing much beyond what we saw in the PS4 pro era. If those leaked specs are mostly right then I'm really confident we will see bigger improvements over base in the PS5 Pro vs what we saw in the PS4 pro.

Seriously, you raise an interesting thought as to how they'll approach optimizing games for the new model, particularly because all games so far were released with the current hardware in mind. Better performance on a case by case basis seems reasonable enough, but they might need to get developers to retroactively bump up the ray tracing or some other facets to help drive appeal to current owners. Hardware adoption is plateauing, so they will still need some double dippers to help things along with an upgraded model, and that means more incentive that also has to be enough for more average consumers who might not care about FPS alone.

Why do we need a pro console again?
We have barely any current PS5 exclusives that have made full use of the PS5's capabilities.

And I'm not just saying this to take the piss because I was interested in a PS5, but I could not justify it

I mean, you bring up Gotham Knights which leads to the perfect example of how the Suicide Squad game looks like trash next to Arkham Knight, a game 10 years old now.
Plus with how bloated budgets have become for games alongside long development times that still release like beta or alpha versions, I don't think you can really blame the budget or time constraints.
