A new CEO meets with his predecessor
The old CEO hands the new one three envelopes.
"These should get you out of any tight spot. If the company runs into trouble, open an envelope and do what it says."
Later that year, as he is being presented with the financials, the CEO sees earnings will be lower than last year. He opens the first envelope. It says

Before the next board meeting, revenue comes in 30% lower than last year. The CEO opens the second envelope.
