Why do people desire and strive for power and authority?
Even such things as working their way up the career ladder so they can have authority over subordinates
Is it a compensatory/defense mechanism for their insecurity?
Such as when somebody with no authority finally gets some and goes on a power trip

If you have no power behind your words backed by monetary means or assets, it'll just be brushed off or taken lightly. If a bum tried to tell you something you're not going to take it as serious as someone who makes 100k/year.
When my dad got sick with cancer, I did my best to push him to be more active. He would do things that were harmful like turn on the heat to 90 degrees because his body felt cold which I told him that its just his mind and that temperature is going to damage his body. He would also brush aside any ideas I would come up with for exercise to rehab his muscles. Even though I was broke, I'm very book smart, which is the difference between the working class and educated class.
Its just constant brushing aside of your ideas and words because at the time I was not working and he would throw me a hundred here and there. I felt quite powerless that I eventually just stopped seeing and helping him and left it to my other siblings to deal with.
So its good to have some power because your good intentions are taken seriously, especially when those intentions are also backed by book knowledge.

power and authority (along with money) means easier access to women in the minds of most men…and that's one of the biggest drivers of human behavior to ever exist.
