Why do people like George Carlin?

I used to like him because he seemed like a lot of what he said made sense.

But really a lot of his rants are just negativity camouflaged as wisdom.

Maybe what he says often contains a grain of truth but he's intentionally focusing on the most pessimistic possible view. And it's not the full truth either.

It was funny when I was 20 but now that I've experienced actual hardship to some extent it's not funny. It's just cringey, a multimillionaire whining about how the system is rigged on his TV specials. Just lol.

Seems designed for losers to cheer.

"Yeah you're too smart and the system is rigged against people like you, that's why you haven't succeeded"

"The boomers rigged it all against you"

"America bad!"

He stripped the glitter off of a lot of topics. It's what a lot of comedy is, pointing out the absurd. You're not going to point out absurdity on a lot of things without coming off pessimistic. Enjoy the content or don't.

100% this.

Carlin, as big of a lefty as he was, saw the government for what it is and found a good way to make fun of the absurdity, and as far as I know, never directly alienated people of opposing political views. He was a comic genius.

His last specials when he was pretty old - for instance the one you linked - definitely were more spiteful indignity and less comedy than previous eras. He kinda fell off at the end. In his prime tho his material was terrific.

His last two specials, for sure. All of his material from the early 70s to the early 2000s (before his last two mentioned) are gold.

George Carlin was the Bill Maher of our parent’s generation.

Comedians are not sources of wisdom. They’re like Tucker Carlson, talking a lot because they are not responsible for ever doing anything right.

Great take, but argue Carlin had much more wit than Mahr

Like a lot of people, the older he got, the grumpier he got. Just look at how bitter David Letterman got at the end of his show.

100 percent chance he would have been a VAX cuck, hardcore leftist today, look at all those who were anti establishment in the 70s like him like Neil Young, Stephen King, they all loyal vaxxers and facists who want to kill and punish those who oppose the democratic party

Its because back in those days the enemy was the Republican they were the evil ones taking the freedoms, but Carlin and the guys like King and young still hold onto the view that the democrats are the good guys, they are all Atheist who bash Christianity yet their religion is the democratic party

Those guys were always idiots though and just chose one side which happened to be the "good" side at the time. If they were too dumb to switch sides or give up supporting either side when the left became pro war, pro corporate establishment cucks, they were never really on the side of the people but just lifelong "liberals" only by party name in politics
