I'm old enough to remember the glory days of the $5 footlong

Subway LEAKIN $$$

Subway has called an emergency meeting with the franchisees that run its 19,000 restaurants amid tumbling sales and profits.

The sandwich chain - with more locations than McDonald's but much lower sales - will reveal plans to lure in more customers. such as deals and new products.

All fast food chains have suffered in the past year as inflation-weary Americans have eaten ot less. McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's have all rolled out $5 meal deals.

But Subway has been particularly badly hit, with sales down 9 per cent - amid complaints of huge price hikes and tired looking shops. And it has yet to roll out a competitive national offer like rivals.

'Maybe Subway is calling an emergency meeting because no one wants to pay $12 for a mediocre sandwich they can make for $3 at home,' Douglas Boneparth, president of Bone Fide Wealth wrote on X.

'I paid almost $20 for a footlong with chips and a drink the other day at Subway. Cheaper to go to Publix and the sandwich is better,' one consumer wrote in agreement.

Subway needs to downsize and focus in hard on the quality of those remaining stores. They could still be very well successful in nicer parts of town.

True. It needs to go down in price by a couple of dollars. You get better value with Chipotle. But if they can increase the quality, they hover around $10-13 for a footlong.

$5 for 5 Arby's Roast Beefs was the king of deals. Especially since Arby's was a much more expensive fast food joint than most other options, back then.

Now even McDonald's and BK prices are ridiculous. The cost of fast food is too high to justify the low quality product, even with convenience factored in.

If these places really wanted to raise their prices so much, they should have improved the quality of the product. Bring back the beef tallow at McDonald's and all-day breakfast, to start.

Rich it’s the same in Canada . I quit going to Subway when it cost me 20 bucks for the sub drink and cookies . Wasn’t that many years ago when it was around 11 - 12 bucks.
There’s better choices out there for 20 bucks imo
