Billion dollar blockbuster behemoth studio owned by trillion dollar company that has been making beloved games for 40 years.
Vs
Some new nobody (Chinese?) company making their first game.
They both got the same score.
Obviously there are wildly different expectations for Bethesda, much as there are wildly elevated expectations of a seasoned pro Olympian vs an average high school athlete. I can't fathom how this is so tough for you to understand.

IGN says it's harder than Shadow of the Erdtree, so it's a skip for me. It looks pretty mid anyway. It's a shame too cuz I was looking forward to this one

Also saw it's mostly just bosses and the story is confusing. Plus no console reviews so that's a red flag for me.
Highly doubt I'll be getting Outlaws based on the gameplay footage I saw. Seems like I'll just be cruising with backlogs for the rest of the year as I don't see any new releases for me in 2024.

The combat and gameplay is more similar to Bayonetta and DMC, but clearly the difficulty's no joke. I struggled with Platting God of War & Ragnarok on Normal, so it's a definite no for me. I also hate hard games cuz I'm pretty chit at them and have very little patience.

I remember many years ago when teasers first came out, it was the visuals which really impressed people. I can see why devs must have felt really pressured to deliver on that.

Every year I like to pre-plan a large chunk of my vacation time around some video game releases (or new seasons/expansions depending). If you asked me earlier in the year I would've 100% said Black Myth: Wukong was on the list, but life ended up happening (buying a house, and also had to take vacay to help GF), so vacay is not happening unfortunately :/. I'm hyped for the game though, heard about it for like half a decade, so damn well better be good, and the gameplay / trailers make it appear as such. The fact woke reviewers hate it means it's probably actually good too.
Next year's vacation time will go towards POE 2, Avowed, GTA 6. Maybe Crimson Desert? Maybe Ashes of Creation?

expected a little more, the fact that its more like boss rush has me on the fence but artstyle is pretty good, will likely get at some point later on.

Game always looked like a tech demo that got turned into a 3rd person hack and slash because it was the easiest way to go to make a game
Art design and stuff looked cool but I was never expecting it to be even half the game something like elden ring is.
I figured most PCcels would buy for the graphics/tech demo aspect

I'm just saying I didn't expect it to be remotely as good as something like elden ring. It looked more of a surface level game that was going to emphasize ue5 and gfx and design. When they first started showing It I thought it was nothing more than a ue5 demo.
But I'm not really paying attention and I don't really care that much. This is just my impression. Maybe people will think it's better then elden ring who knows.

The combat in Elden Ring is kinda surface level tbh, all you do is roll until the boss finishes his combo, you get 2 hits in and then begin the rolling process again. The fun part is boss variety and learning how to dodge their patterns but every fight boils down to the same formula of rolling and getting a couple hits in until the next long combo.
This was made painfully worse in the DLC where you're stuck with the same old Dark Souls movement while enemies fly around the map like Goku. Formula is very old imo, they need an overhaul for their next game.

I completely agree with you with that 80+ is generally a damned good fukkin game ….
But putting it into context of the whole argument ITT. Starfield was made by Bethesda, a AAA developer that's backed by MS $$$$, Zenimax and their own calibre, It was marketed to the high heavens on every trade/game show as a game that would be genre defining for Xbox and the industry. Having your marquee title by your marquee developer reach only 82 or some chit is hugely disappointing and an embarrassment. Starfield was marketed and purported as being a killer AAA title game but it chat the bed and ended up as a failure compared to Bethesda's previous outings such as Fallout or Elder Scrolls.
Wukong is a completely new ip, with a new dev, so 80+ is a tremendous achievement. It's not comparable at all given the fact that Bethesda had the MS money, experience, talent, budget compared to whole new game made by their dev's as the first outing.
Let's not forget that Fallout New Vegas, which was hugely popular and considered by many to be the best fallout game was still considered a fail by Bethesda standards and Bethesda completely fukked Obsidian due to the score received.

I guess I just don’t see it that way because I never was expecting to it be some generation defining game. If Sony comes out with a, say, 88 reviewed game and so does some indie studio, I just see it as two great games. That’s partially because I don’t see aaa or “a” as any indicators of quality whatsoever, aside from technical graphics (not even beauty, as simple games can be more beautiful)
New Vegas is great but I think it reviewed worse than other games in Bethesda style rpg’s because it had a ton of issues at launch, more so than other games using that engine. I think if it was reviewed 6 months after launch it would have reviewed much better

Ghost of Tsushima: 83 - Game of the Year contender, incredible game
Starfield: 83 - Absolute flop, couldn't be worse.
Wukong: 82 - Amazing game, just slightly bugged and suffers from performance issues.
Halo: Infinite: 87 - absolute slop, this effectively kills the Halo franchise. They should have never launched this game.
Stray: 83 - 3 hour long cat "platformer" with automated platforming – GAME OF THE YEAR NOMINEEE
Lies of P: 80 - "best souls adjacent since Bloodborne"
You can chalk it up to "expectations" if you want but the REAL issue with game scores is that there is very little consistency between score and quality (apparently) and evidently anything under 10 is trash, but also at the same time it's not. Games media and Games Twitter have bastardized thr point of game reviews beyond comprehension.
I think it's safe to say any games from 82-86ish are probably really solid games with a couple of glaring issues. But we can't take these scores objectively anymore because of "expectations" or some other nonsense. It just doesn't make sense anymore.

One thing to keep in mind is that game of a particular genre, I would expect, are rated against the best of their class.
For example, I have zero care for Mario games but it's rated as a platformer, whereas Halo is rated as a shooter. (or should be)
That aside, I still think there must be some bias that exists when it comes to devs and companies that have prestige and provide entitlements and further collaborations with reviewers for positive bias in their reviews.
You pointed out a great example.
Starfield: Got a decent amount of backlash and while majority of people said the game was good, barely anyone thought it came close to the best in its genre like Elder Scrolls etc. Score: 83
Lies of P: Got a ton of praise by the community. Became an instant classic. Many people call it the best Soulslike from a company not named Fromsoft. There is literally no drama or negativity towards this game at all and it compares very favorably to the best in its class (Bloodborne etc). Score: 80
This does not add up at all.
