Worst launch of a Sony game I've ever seen. 8 years, 100 million+ to make lol.
To recap, Sony's GAAS push has:
1. Produced 2 flops and 1 win
2. Done damage to their reputation
3. Maybe made them a little money?
4. Destroyed their single player game pipeline where they would have made nonstop profits

If their single player games were producing "non stop profit" they wouldn't be scrambling for live service titles… Which actually do produce $$$. Sony just doesn't know how to make one, and microsoft has enough money to just buy them.
I'm sure budgeting 200m for a single player game that ends up in a bargain bin in 6 months doesn't help.
Sony execs heads spinning while free to play games are making 10x what they are investing hundreds of millions into while being actively played for years on end

They don't NEED non stop profit, they just want it so they can sit back and be lazy and less innovative while dumb gamers consume endless slop.
Just make good games.

- big blockbusters will expect big returns and these are going to end up being the more soulless genre of games just like they are the more soulless genre of music and movies. They won't be risky or original or push boundaries if they are being made by xxx big company. These games will be the Dwayne the rock Johnson or Ryan Reynolds movies of gaming
- indies will be revered and that's where actual art and talent will shine
- classical stuff will make a comeback because the stuff out today just generally sucks and is too heavily influenced by politics or corporations..
- you can't trust big reviewers because they are being greased in some form of fashion. Period.
Theres going to be different layers of gaming, because there will be enough for everyone to get their fill no matter what kind of games they like. Same with movies and music.

It was their chase for even more profit that led them to scramble down the GAAS rabbithole, but they severely overestimated their abilities and how difficult it would be to break into the market. If they had just doubled down on their single player capabilities they would 100% be a richer company today.
Think about the billions lost with Bungie, Firewalk, Fairgames, scrapped Factions 2 and the 6 other titles that were either delayed or scrapped altogether. On top of that, think about the sunk cost in the loss of all the PS5 sales they could have had. Weak exclusive library this gen and top multi-player titles still stuck on PS4 and just general lack of hype has had many buyers complaining "PS5 has no games", "why bother upgrade when I have access to almost everything on PS4" etc.

Why spend 300m making Spiderman just for the sales to dwindle into nothing after 1 year, when they can spend that on a game like fortnite or overwatch that will continue to rake in sales/transactions for years to come.
Long term these games are more profitable and usually require less budget.
Every company wants the next fortnite. Game cost like 100m to initially make and now it's been making billions for years with no slowing down in sight.
That is what every company is chasing right now.
Single player games just die and then they don't make money.

- want to push GAAS
- release a hero shooter in 2024
- for 40 bucks, when everything else is f2p
- with butt ugly chars, so nobody would even consider spending on skins
Result: a game with more genders than players. Fantastic play from Sony

Live service games are NOT raking in huge profits. Only the top ones in the world are, aka a very small percentage.
That's a drastic difference from what you're pretending it is.

Because Spiderman 2 turned that 300M into over a billion. That's 700M+ profits and sales are continuing.
Meanwhile, the studio isn't locked into supporting Spiderman 2 for the next decade and is instead now working on a Venom standalone as well as Wolverine. Do you think a studio stops producing more single player games once one is released?

Using concord as an example is weird because it came out yesterday and obviously flopped hard. Sony simply didn't make a good game and that's on them, it doesn't change the fact that other companies are doing it and making money. Sony just sucks.
It's just funny because obviously board rooms agree and that's why you're seeing everyone attempt ways to use live service and subscriptions in their games and platforms.
This isn't even factoring in the amount of data these companies collect and sell thru their services, why do you think Sony is dying to get pc players to register accounts… Data collection is a business of its own

What are the top 10 GAAS games today and how many are many years old? Bish you yourself still play Apex primarily.
Just by logic alone, as even you admit, GAAS titles require from players a huge time plus money investment. They are far more difficult to break into the market as it is very saturated. Those same players would happily take a break throughout their GAAS committment to buy and play multiple single player games along the way.

SM2 had a budget of 300+ and sold ~11m or so copies so far
And SM2 started development way before Covid and the interest hikes. The genre is toast, dev costs will just keep rising while the profits just aren't there, unless you're Nintendo or Rockstar.

SM1 = out for 6 years, discounted, on PS4, PS5 AND PC (much larger install base) = 50M copies
SM2 = out for 10 months, $70, PS5 only (much smaller install base) = 11M copies
Imagine ignoring how long they've been out and the massive discrepancy of install base

And just because ya'll are old fuks who don't like mp, realize every kid now is playing games online. For every 1 of you who hates modern mp games and bla blah, there's 100+ kids addicted to fortnite or Minecraft
I'm not gunna say single player is dead but no companies are chasing that dragon like they are for mp live service titles and that's for a very clear reason.
Fortnite is a literal staple of modern childhood, probably even more than halo or starcraft or whatever was for us

I always lol @ the talking point that Sony suddenly needs GAAS games to fund single players.
Sony took billions of profits they made from single player games that made them rich over 20 years.
Invested in GAAS companies and 12 GAAS projects
Scrapped half those projects after years, the rest flopping left and right
What do they have to show for it? Helldivers 2 and an old dying Destiny 2.
Billions lost to make a few 10s of millions.
Brainlets on the misc: Now they can finally fund single player games!

Top multiplayer games: old games that have been around for years.
Top single player games: games released in the past few days, weeks and months.
Companies spending literal billions in GAAS to throw chit at the wall and see what sticks.
It's like morons who spend their life savings on the lotto.
They will eventually learn after they get their clocks cleaned out.
Then, they'll blame it on single player games costing too much to make instead of their own retardation.

I don't understand why ppl say it's flopping. It's the same on par garbage as all other Sony published games. Relatively, it's actually doing as expected.

Yes. And what goobers in this thread fail to realize is GAAS landscape is incredibly hard to find success in.

Meanwhile the cons:
Far fewer new innovative IPs
Expensive predatory mtx
Other devs trying to copy the formula
Good games like Battlefield get watered down in attempts to copy the formula.

And SM2 started development way before Covid and the interest hikes. The genre is toast, dev costs will just keep rising while the profits just aren't there, unless you're Nintendo or Rockstar.

Tough luck, That's not our problem. Devs better figure out a way to cheaper costs. Use the same assets, game engine, etc. Honestly if you ask me, it's all a conspiracy. No reason for increases.
And we aint even brouht up A.I. If A.I. is what we really think it is, its gonna crush buildings.

Yeah, they did make them profitable
Then the world shifted and we all became connected instantly. Covid compounded that tenfold when we couldn't go out and see friends and socialized thru video games.

All I wanted was Factions 2, Killzone and/or Socom. That's not really asking for much considering the multitude GAAS out now

I don't understand why ppl say it's flopping. It's the same on par garbage as all other Sony published games. Relatively, it's actually doing as expected.
Lmao @ Sonycels

Sony's revered aaa titles come out at a snails pace
Tons of remakes and remasters instead of new games
Projects being canceled, studios firing and shifting employees
You think you aren't feeling the effects but you are

The reason none of those franchises are not getting revived is because the kids, who are their primary target audence now, have no idea what socom or Killzone is. Tactical shooters aren't selling skins to kids. Fun popcorn shooters are though. Look at cods shift in skin sales over the last few games. Mw2019 started with normal tactical looking type skins and operators. Now you can play as snoop Dogg or mascot cartoon characters. Because that's what sells to kids.
Us old heads aren't dumb idiots spending money on recycled garbage. Kids are.
And I hate to tell you but consoles are where kids play the most. So everything you get is targeted for them. If you want tactical shooters, you go to pc
