These people are in for a rude awakening when their chick takes them to court and a judge forces them to sell their home, awards 50% of their possessions to the chick and grants her monthly support payments that will be taken directly from your paycheck and deposited to her account.

All of this for a woman they never married and only lived with for around a year and a half... and who cheated on them.

I paid a bit over $8000 for a sectional, but it's hand made domestically, full grain leather, has an engineered steel / hardwood / softwood structure, etc

If you want to continue being in a relationship with her just go ahead and buy cheap furniture that will cost about 1k total instead of 10k.
If she has a problem with what you pick being too cheap and her still not contributing financially then you should proceed to buy a airline ticket to North Carolina.
For you to have 100k in savings as opposed to her having 0 in savings already shows how different your values and lifestyles are.

Depends on their ages, do we know her age?

There may be other factors too. I wouldn't necessarily rule out a woman without savings, but it would be a yellow flag to dig into. The fact she wants (and expects OP) to spend $10k on furniture when she herself has $0 is a red flag though.

Just in case it wasn't super clear OP, the $10k request is a NO. Set a budget of $1k per room, suggest second-hand furniture (lots of good stuff out there) and gauge her response. She should be happy you'd even pay $2k - yes that's a simple test.

This.

I'd spend like 2k max buying gently used stuff at a discount (except a mattress, $500 @ costco). Buy leather sofas so they can be cleaned easily. Salvation Army stores usually have brand new kitchen stuff for dirt cheap.

Tell your gf that you two can save together from here on out for a year or two to buy/get credit for new stuff (ie once you're married and own a place, priorities). Some furniture stores have credit lines where you don't pay for a year or two, no interest.

In the mean time she should be working on increasing her income and credit score to accomplish all of that. Explain this is something to work towards together. Even if you are planning for her to be a SAHM, she should still work on getting a side income stream going.

100k won't go far once you own a place and start a family. Better to play it safe

It takes 2 years of living together to become common law. At least in Canada, not sure about where OP lives.

In the United States, common law marriage is only recognized in a few states, and requires the parties to be representing themselves as married. "We're practically married" won't meet the standard, you have to be actually representing yourselves as husband and wife.

the fuk is this $10k for furniture

You can get a decent couch, love seat, coffee table, end tables, bed, dresser, frame and a few other pieces with a price tag around $2500. What kind of expectations does she have.
If anything, just go to a furniture store and do the ZERO apr sh*t they always offer, for like 5 years. I mean, I dont care about having super aesthetic furniture, I just want it to be comfy. I paid $600 for my couch.

furniture has a resale value? I've always thought to just sell it for what you can when the time comes. You sit on that sh*t long enough, people should pay much for sharing ass funk.

Wow I hope he's trolling. Dating less than a month and already at this point??

Reign this chit storm in OP. You two are living in fantasy land. Life is not a movie.

Unless she is from a rich family, this whole thing just became a huge red flag. At least if her family is rich you can expect them to pay for the wedding (as cringey as that is to think about 1 month in) and half the down payment on a place.

If her family is unstable, again red flag. Start booking your flights to NC

I was in same boat. You cant realistically expect someone with $0 to now toil for $10k for furniture--right or wrong it will create animosity and certainly end.

Maybe find a solution where she contributes in lieu of $$$ like cleans apartment or makes meals. Or just buy in your name and leave it at that.

Money is the biggest relationship-ender. Be careful unless you DGAF.
Wow, it only took 4 posts for someone to give a reasonable answer. Well played brah.

I highly doubt that. There will be no hardware holding it together, only joinery techniques. All flush to perfection. That chair will look exactly the same in 50 years as it does today.

You'd literally have to be a professional to replicate that. High end labour, materials, design and brand do not come cheap.

Funny thing is some rich people will only keep furniture for like 2 - 5 years before buying new styles. Always looking to one up their friends, providing new stuff to brag about.

Don't ignore everyone who is surely calling for you to cut bait here. I haven't even read the thread and I know what's coming. It's come for a reason here, though.

Pro-tip, take whatever problems you have in your relationship in it's current form and amplify them by 10 to taste what it'll be like once married. So, if she's unreasonable and leeching like this now, expect a lifetime full of her not even trying to pull her own weight, making lie-ful promises she knows she won't keep and nagging you relentlessly if you bring this up.

Dump this loser, find someone who is up to your speed. If you're successful and putting away good money like this, you need to match yourself with a stable, responsible person. 10-20K on furniture? That she can't even cover a penny? Give me a break.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Buy the furnitures OP but:
- Dont let her sit on the couch except when smashing.
- She will eat her food on the floor.
- She is not allowed to sleep on the bed except when smashing.
- If you will also buy the appliances, then she cannot look at the TV, and must cover her ears when you're playing music from your hifi surround system.

Seriously, you relationship is already doomed. She will be trying her best to one-up you on expenses since she know you have the money and you will forever be thinking that she's trying to play you.
