In the end she got alimony for a year.
I have no idea if she even still does Ebay but she did it for several years when we were married and it was a pretty big business when she was really trying at it. But I think she may have a regular job now by some of the things she mentioned when I made plans on picking up the kids for the summer.

I have heard of people paying out 80% of alimony entitlements as lump sums just to be done with it (as money today > money tomorrow)

It's also based on her ability to get a job and earn on her own. If after the year was up and she wasn't able to find a job (and had sufficient proof that she tried) she could have requested an extension. But since she didn't do that, I'm pretty sure she has a job now plus some things she mentioned about work this summer.

It's not a lot of money and it's only because I make so much more than her. Find someone with the same earning capacity as you have nothing to worry about. I wanted her to stay home to raise our kids because I could afford it, so it was kind of my own doing.
I may circle back to see if she will agree to 3 with the possibility of up to 5 if she can prove she needs it.

Been there done that, twice.
he will get all of the bills and have to pay child support until the kids are 18. no way around it unless he wants to fight to get the kids which is very expensive.
His main problem will be with confidence. he can always get a place to live and buy new stuff. the blow to his confidence is tough to get over for any guy.
beer will become his friend.
Its just going to take some time. its like when brooks got parole in shawshank. he was someone inside but back to square one on the outside. your pal will go through the same thing. he is now older, broker, fatter and less disireable then he was when he first got married. hasnt dating in 15 years either so its a whole new thing to get adjusted to.
his best bet is to just step back, not rush into anything, get a lwayer and take care of himself before anyone else.
he needs to realize that he now has freedom. sometimes its a difficult thing to adjust to but he will be happier in the end.

For all we know, he's better off. We don't know who was the cause of this, but if the relationship was great then there wouldn't be a divorce.
A house and car? Merely shiny baubles we preoccupy ourselves with. He is about to experience freedom he hasn't had for 15 years. It's just a new beginning is all.

I paid $45k to her last year. She still had the nerve to ask if I wanted to split the cost on some Christmas presents and other things for the kids. My answer was always the same. I laugh and say that's what child support is for plus I'm giving them stuff FROM ME so they know it's FROM ME.
Don't ever pay her a dime more than what the court requires you too. I don't care how good you get along through or after the divorce process either. Trust me.
I get along pretty good with her now but she'd not hesitate to take more $ if she could. And she was never even materialistic or about money before the divorce. Don't feel bad, don't give in, don't throw her a bone. She'll find a way to get even more $ from you before you realize it.
example: Happened to me right before divorce was final in fact. At the last hearing, we agreed (because I insisted) that we each get to claim one kid for tax purposes. I was adamant about that. I didn't ask for much or really anything through the whole process except for that.
So anyway, it's agreed upon and gets put in the draft decree in December 2014. Finalizing this stuff takes a while and it wasn't until March that it was finalized. Anyway, it's March 2015 and I got to file my taxes and claim my oldest son which is what the decree said. I'm supposed to get X amount of dollars back and I'm pretty happy with the amount. Couple of days later I get a call that says it's been rejected because she already claimed him BEFORE the decree was finalized. So I got screwed out of almost $2k in tax return last year. I called her up and went off on her but since it was before final decree she wasn't legally wrong to do that. But morally she was since she agreed prior.
Well that's just an example, you get the point. Doesn't happen anymore though since it's been finalized over a year ago.

Fukkkkk
Imagine what chit will be like in 30 years when all the kids raised by single moms are in power...
Brb ex gfs can now demand alimony and child support even if the child isn't yours and was born years later
Brb ex gfs now receive 100% earnings + residence + vehicles + your human rights
Brb all guys that are straight pay a 100% tax on earnings
Brb white males pay a 200% tax on earnings and can't work in any company beyond entry level positions
Brb white males must look at the ground and apologize for breathing (aka stealing the less privileged humans air)

PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.
GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.
PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?
GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.
GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.

My house that I live in I'm about to sell. I owe about $300K but market value is $340K. So I could make more or less than that on it when I sell. My other house is a rental and I plan to keep a while. I make a little money each month on it but mainly waiting for it to become profitable to sell as well. I could end up making far more on selling the houses than what I paid her. So in the short term, yes i got fukked. But in the long term, not really (as far as assets go at least).
Now the alimony stuff is BS but that's another issue, at least it's over with though. Child support is pretty standard based on gross income in the state I divorced in so can't really do much with that one.

GL to all the divorced bruhs in this thread. Must be rough. Know a buddy who is going through it right now and more than the financial aspect of it all he looks emotionally drained. Like his life force has been sucked out of him. Hard to describe but it looks painful. Sucks because he is one of the nicest people I've met and it appears that she is taking him to the cleaners. He has his own dental practice too so I wonder if she is going to get a piece of that pie.

Cant be resentful for changes in life, and certainly you cant be afraid to live.Only fked thing is the how the court handle these casesin the US. Unlike what most miscers believe European countries have 100x more fair and reasonable policys concerning these matters.

I work with a dude who when they split, they just went their own ways. Each filed taxes as individuals and each were responsible for their own outcome. They didn't have kids, but also didn't have to pay any alimony, even though the judge pushed for his ex to accept it. She said she didn't want him in her life anymore and that she could do it on her own.
That dude lucked out and I asked him why they split. I guess they just wanted different things and changed over time. Luckily it was early enough that they didn't have any kids or anything else cause that could have gotten messy.

Next thing you know she's eating it up and going after finances and assets that she never would've thought about otherwise.

Time to marry up boyos. Marry women who have chit to lose. And if she decides to stay at home and get fat and pregnant, cut her loose. If she wants to stay home then she better work from home.
