There are actually websites to buy peoples bank details, I can't believe how often this happens, and how much the banks are losing or not gaining from credit card theft. Not that I'd ever feel sorry for a bank. Rarely do these people ever get caught.

tldr; Whatever you decide is up to you, but my 2c is that they won't even waste their time calling you for 2k. Like others have said, you could have given the envelope straight to the person you were buying the car from without counting it, unknown to you it contained double the amount withdrawn. Why should you be punished and deducted money from your account for their mistake?

LOL @ people who think karma is a real thing.
I worked at a Major Bank in midtown Manhattan for 5 years, not in the teller staff, but I was in the sales staff, so we were somewhat familiar with their processes and checks.

Every teller has a list of their transactions and at the end of the day they run checks EVERY DAY to the head teller and usually a manager. They actually have to match to the CENT, otherwise they keep rerunning the receipts to find the discrepancy. I haven't seen anything larger than like 100 or 200, so I couldn't say how they recover the money.

There IS some one checking. Whether they decide to recuperate or not is a management decision. You're lucky sometimes these can be up to the individual bank manager if they care about eating a minor loss or not. In your case $2,000 is NOT minor. Even at my branch in midtown that can handle $1 million a day, that $2,000 is a large transaction for a specific teller to be missing. It's not like you think, that the $2,000 is viewed all the way up to the friggin CEO of Chase bank looking and scoffing at $2,000. It is looked at, at the smallest level, teller to head teller, to possibly the teller staff supervisor.

Now on if they do decide to recover the money, they won't withdraw it, but they have the ability to hold/lock $2,000 temporarily from your account, while the dispute goes on. It's as simple as hitting enter on their computer. If you're lucky, their supervisor ignores it and fires the teller(roll of the dice here), if they're a strict anal uptight supervisor, they are not letting this go.

No, they won't. Totally illegal to debit someones checking account without being owed. Especially off of a guess? There is literallynoway to know where the extra 2K went, unless there is a camera directly monitoring the teller putting cash in envelopes.

usually banks can't touch your account without your permission if you do not have a line of credit with that bank.

Lol at the retards saying they're gonna deduct OP's account. He has 2k on the receipt, the bank teller could of as well pocketed the money in a camera blind spot.
Just keep it, small chance you'll hear about this again, and if you do just deny everything.

Good luck proving that in court, stop overthinking and going for worst case scenarios.
They're just gonna have an investigation, try and find the teller that screwed up through camera footage (if they do), punish him and since the money didn't get counted in front of OP they have no video evidence their missing money was in the envelope. Maybe they'll call and ask, but if you deny they won't go any further.

If what you said OP was true and the teller did not do his due diligence, (went to the back, handed you the envelope without counting the cash) the teller will be held responsible and will be punished accordingly. If you decide to keep it, I would stash it away for a month or so and see if anyone comes knocking for it

I still don't understand how this is possible? Don't tellers get money from something similar to an atm? They don't actually have the cash on hand, you have to enter into the atm the amount the customer is withdrawing and it gives you the exact amount. That's how the banks work here, even the credit unions. I have a hard time believing a big bank would still be using cash on hand in your drawer method.

Something just doesn't seem right about this scenario. Theirs no chance the teller accidentally gave you an extra two THOUSAND dollars. I could maybe see at most an extra hundred if they got stuck together MAYBE. But two thousand dollars isn't a small amount that could be overlooked. Either the teller was trying to fuk the bank over for personal reasons or the story isn't true.

large organizations spend tons of money on risk management and loss prevention. if they were to take no action here, in what case would they? you saying that they are cool with tellers handing out free money?
$2000 is actually a substantial amount of money. i give them 24 hours (starting from the next business day so probably tomorrow) before they launch and solve the investigation.

It won't go to court cause there's no video evidence of there being 4k in the envelope the moment he got it, the teller could of put 4k in the envelope out back on video, then on the way back took out 2k from the envelope in a camera blind spot, put it in his pocket and then handed OP his money.

Not really sure that's possible. How is it OPs fault they gave him too much? I bought a dozen oysters from an oyster farm the other day and they gave me like 20. When i go back they don't get to charge me for the extra 8.

edit: saw story above, that's fcked up.

For $2,000.....? You'd be spending more on an attorney and/or court costs.

Here's more:

I didn't say you would - I said the lower court ruling seems insane. And, yea, personally I would spend the money. It wouldn't be about 2k for me, it would be about not being a criminal.

Police: Man Gets $3,000 After Bank Mistake, Refuses to Reimburse

Police: Man Gets $3,000 After Bank Mistake, Refuses to Reimburse
A Riverside man who refused to return money to a bank after the teller gave him too much was arrested on theft charges this week, according to police.

Felipe S. DePaula, 27, of the unit block of Scott Street, went to Delanco Federal Savings Bank on Route 130 to cash a $300 check on May 16, said. The bank teller accidentally gave DePaula $3,000 instead of $300. And police said he was caught on tape watching the teller count out the amount.

But DePaula didn't ride high with the cash for long; the bank contacted him the next day to ask for the money back.

DePaula said he lost the envelope.

He was apprehended by Cinnaminson Police, processed and remanded to Burlington County Jail on $2,500 cash bail.

This information comes directly from Cinnaminson Police. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

I understand... no case is cut and dry. I'm just saying there is a possibility that OP gets investigated. For me - $2,000 is definitely not worth the pain in the ass dealing with it. But if you guys want to do chit like that and post about it publicly online, feel free lol

N.J. man jailed after bank teller accidentally gives him an extra $2,700

A Burlington County man was put in jail after he didn't return money mistakenly given to him by a teller while cashing a check at a bank, according to a report on PhillyBurbs.com

Felipe S. DePadula, 27, of Riverside is charged with receiving stolen property after a teller at Delanco Federal Savings Bank on Route 130 in Cinnaminson gave him $3,000 when he went to cash a $300 check.
The bank contacted DePadula about the error a few days later but he said he lost the envelope that had the cash, the report said.

He was charged Wednesday after police examined the bank's security footage. DePadula was held on $2,500 bail. The construction worker has been unemployed since being injured, according to 6abc.com.
/Thread.

This didn't happen anyway. But if it did, phucking lol at thinking the bank doesn't have the technology to find the mistake.

Very surprising but I'd be more interested in if a court has ruled in a bank's favor in these cases. Just because the local heehaw sherrif charges somebody doesn't mean larceny is going to hold up.
