Heartbreaking chit.
is it me or are just Gators/Crocodiles just far more savage compared to sharks. I dive recreationally and I never get scared seeing Sharks in the water (only been around reef sharks lol) but I'd prolly lose my chit if I ever saw a Gator in the water. Then again I have never come across a Tiger, Bull or Great White irl and hope I never see one diving.

People who are saying it isnt common sense to know about alligators if you arent from florida or tropical environments are simply dumb people. What kind of an adult doesnt know alligators live in florida lakes??? Seriously??
Im from NJ, ive been in Florida a few years, and guess what, I knew about alligators when i was 5 in NJ you idiots, watch the fuking nature channel and read a book.

In the areas surrounding disney there are at least several thousand gators, fact. These things move, they dont live in one body of water there whole life. At any given time there are hundreds if not thousands of large gators cycling through disney property. The fact that gators exist in florida is fairly common....im pretty sure florida even has alligator warning signs around lakes and swamps...
THis wasnt at a random swamp..this was in an amusement park resort
THis wasnt at a random swamp..this was in an amusement park resort
Also, the kid wasnt "strolling through the resort" he was IN A LAKE!!!!!. Disney has no control over all the potential animal threats on their property, thats an endless battle that would end in thousands of dead inosent animals that were endangered not too long ago because people continuously killed them. For every gator you see there are 10 you dont see, you cannot eradicate these things, they are there to stay.

They'll have a harder time making an argument that they aren't responsible for the alligators if they've voluntarily taken responsibility for removing alligators. They also can't claim it was unforeseeable, since they were given prior notice of an actual alligator attack.
They even closed down the beaches today out of an "abundance of caution". That's practically a confession that they failed to exercise the same caution when someone was attacked a few weeks ago. It's one thing to run a beach where beach-goers assume a risk of encountering an alligator, it's another thing to run a beach where there is a hungry alligator with a known predilection for the flesh of human children and the resort didn't say anything or do anything about it.

Lol What a stupid comparison...do you even logic?
It is generally known sticking a fork in an outlet is gonna cause....but theres a variety of reasons why someone would post a no swimming sign...also, let me point out that no one was even swimming.

You dont have to be a fuking zoologist to know what an alligator is.

I'm really not trying to be a dik but I see murky water in a hot/wet area of the planet and I automatically think of dangerous reptiles.
Would you be surprised to find bats inside of caves? Would it shock you to see a snake in the swamp? I mean cmon now....no one can possibly..I don't even...
Also, this didn't happen in the middle of the Magic Kingdom next to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It happened in a giant lagoon where you can fish, and boat...

So sad.
There was no alligator warning, just a no swimming warning. Also, no swimming doesn't mean "no wading". It's a waterfront where people are encouraged to walk on.

BTW, the father DID try to wrestle the son from the alligator. He witnessed it and tried to rescue. An alligator in just a foot of water is extremely agile and quick. Understand that an alligator has around 800-1000lbs jaw strength when clenched.
Second, this wasn't some deserted out of the way lagoon. This is Disney's property on one of their premiere resorts. Seriously, yards away from the hotel.
It - or another gator - lunged at a family just a couple of weeks earlier.
Presumably, this is not a routine event at the park. Nobody has been eaten in 45 years of gators in that lagoon. We don't hear about this in the news or in travel reviews.
They had notice that the thing that that never happens was now happening: a gator was going after guests. At that point, I think there's a much stronger argument that they had knowledge of an actual danger and should have taken some action. The argument for negligence, to my non-lawyer mind, is that they should have closed the beaches at that time, and because they didn't, this happened. They finally did the right thing too late.
I get what youa re saying about the gator possibly targetting humans specifically, could it have been a case of people getting to close to the water last time as well, and on top of that this incident took place pretty late in the evening it was already dusk out, even further narrowing the window of visibility. we dont know the specifics of how the previous event went down, but id be willing to bet that if a gator lunged at them they were either in or on the edge of the water, i dont believe the gator came up onto the beach while they were 10-20 yards out from the water and snapped at them.

Are kids safe on the sand?
The problem is Americans need their hands held in every aspect of decision making. No other country has to tell people the painfully obvious things we have to people. Ive been to many potentially dangerous places in many countries and almost none of them had signs that said "dont go near cliff edge" "dont swim in water at night" "Dont approach wildlife" act, act, act.
Its borderline paranoia to not let your kid walk in water, but at 9:30 at night in Florida If i was the father that would not have happened.

I wasn't aware that bodies of water surrounding resort areas were off limits to native species. All this time I've been wasting my time being aware that a shark could be in the waters with me when I'm swimming in the ocean. How do they get the animals to turn around and go somewhere else?

It's hard to imagine the croc or gator sinking to the bottom of the water w/prey in mouth and casually digging a hole to put their prey in. If they don't do it underwater, I've never seen any shows/documentaries filming them burying their prey on the shore.

feel like i dont know an above average amount about reptiles or gators at all, but i know these things and most of you dont, very interesting the lack of what i assumed was common knowledge

-Yes. Kill everyone in sight.
