The fact remains that 100k+ is easily achievable in a lot of professions, and is pretty close to middle class in a lot of areas.

Umm, I live in the nicest area in DSM and had a completely renovated, 4-bedroom, 2300sqft house for $195k. My mortgage was $1200k...if you make $75k here, you're doing very well, live well and happy.

I get the misc trolling about money but 98% of you are full of chit which is fine but it's fuks up young dudes that think it's real.

If you think your friends/colleagues/family is even a close percentage to 50% of the people you KNOW in the world.....

This will never happen as all of the decent major cities have higher COL because they are decent+ cities. Is an extra $40k year worth it to live in St louis vs Denver? Not a chance.

I said low COL "relative to other major cities"
Austin has a low cost of living relative to Los Angeles and would argue Austin is a cooler city by far.

San Diego and Austin are literally the two best cities in Merica. I'd take a pay cut to live in San Diego.

I placed some big bets on Austin with rental properties 10 years ago spread throughout the city but mostly around the downtown area and it seems to be paying off fairly well.

Therein lies the problem...the jobs that pay that kind of money rarely exist here and the people that hold them are not 25 years old. I realize you're 40 but many of these people do and will not ever break $250k much less break $125k in a city like this. Chit I work for a large company and the VP of sales that covers DSM territory just breaks $250k and he lives fat af...

Understood how that works as most people stay close to where they are born. On the flip side, there are jobs that allow you to work from anywhere that make that make north of that. I know a handful of people that moved to Texas from California and kept their comp plans. So if I was forced to move to either Manhattan or Des Moines, Id seriously consider Des Moines over Manhattan.

100k with no wife and kids and a house mortgage/tax/insurance of 800-something is living like a king. brb never ever have to think about money unless i accidentally pay too much extra principal on my mortgage
