The article is not proposing taking away money.

What the article is questioning is the ethics of hoarding millions or billions, when; it's not necessary to live comfortable life, and when it could be used to help people.

The author proposes a voluntary threshold of $100 K per person, and an extra $50k per child. Meaning a family of 3 would have a threshold of $250,000. And anything more than that would begiven to charity.

Here is a summary of some research regarding income and happiness...

Again, it's not about acquisition. And I don't want to turn this into a debate about capitalism.

It's questioning the ethics of keeping money beyond a certain amount, while people starve to death around the world.
Aka wealth redistribution. Fuk off

Not really. You cannot lump all rich people into the same category. Look at someone such as Bill Gates. He got rich by living out his dream of opening a computer/software company. He did not steal or kill to earn his money. He created thousands of jobs directly and indirectly that allowed others to earn their own wages as a means to live and support families, as well as donating millions and millions to worthy causes.

Meanwhile, you have folks in poverty that make bad decisions (note, I am not saying that all folks in poverty have made poor decisions, I realize that other factors are at play) and need money from the government (through tax-payers that are earning a wage of their own). People in poverty are simply not contributing to the common good as much as the rich.

Private charities exist, and most rich folks probably donate quite a bit to charities that they like.

Literally multi-millionaires and billionaires will have money in banks for years, not even using the wealth to make purchases, literally just hoarding it. Ethical?

(I'm going to avoid the statement about the profit motive, because that would turn this into a 'capitalism' debate.)
yeah that's how they became millionaires - by parking their money in a savings account at 0.5% interest.

I don't think you or the article realize how much money swings around the stock market on a daily basis. What number are we basing it on. If I'm a CEO of a company, I can set my salary at the maximum allowed in the article and have the rest invested/saved so my net worth may be in the billions but my annual income is only 100k. Rich people find tax havens and they'll find ways around something like this too. Best believe if I'm allowed to donate my excess money to any charity, it'll be to my own charities and other rich peer's charities. The tax benefits alone would still continue keeping the rich rich and the poor poor.

No.

I'm guessing that was a loaded question, so I'll elaborate...

If I won the lottery, I would move to a SE Asian country (I want to live their anyway), calculate living costs, and do philanthropy. I wouldn't hoard millions, I don't see the point.

It's easy for me though TBH, because I naturally have never been materialistic, and my current role models are Jesus, spiritual cultivators, and mystics (I don't belong to any single religion FWIW). The life of Franciscan Friars, nuns, and secular followers, genuinely impress me more than Dan Bilzerian's.

The only tempting thing about being rich is the sense of security, but I couldn't justify to my conscience sitting on millions just to feel good.

Which is exactly what the article is arguing that is the ethical thing for rich people to do.

That's literally the point of the article. To encourage it to a greater degree.

He is arguing that rich people who don't do it are immoral. Which I agree with. He is not arguing that being rich isinherently wrong, it's a clickbait article title... Meaning, there is no nuance shown in the title.

Help pay off some one's student loans?

Not sure if srs. Sure, let me just help pay for this guys masters degree in african american studies from harvard or yale. He is really struggling and needs my help!

Fuk off, its up to each individual to make smart decisions. If not, then they pay the price.

I watched tons of vids on people who were victims of the madoff ponzi scheme. These rich people put their entire savings into the fund and lost EVERYTHING. How can you feel sorry for someone who put all of their money into one pot?

Also the guys who worked for Bernie cannot find a job. Literally, these guys have been trying to find jobs for years but cannot find one. And its like, okay, you can't find a wall street job anymore. But they were making over 100k a year, and you would think that by now they would get a fukking clue and switch jobs or go back to school and get a new degree. But no, same ol same ol, let me just try to find another job on wall street, NOPE.

Dumb people, dumb people everywhere.

And really, if I was making that much money then I would give to charity. Allot of them do.

Simple argument, but the strongest one that's been presented. Srs.

Actually, you might have opened my eyes to a possible key reason behind a lot of objections. They might not be utilitarians, so they might not be receptive to appeals to the greater good.

As someone already stated morals are subjective.

I personally don't care about those starving to death in poor countries. In African countries where the fertility rate is 5 children, I question the morality of poor people reproducing so much when they cant look after themselves. Creating this ballooning population of mouths to feed and using up the worlds resources. To me it would be moral if a lot of those people died off and let Africa return to nature, because animals and ecological impact are more important. I have the same opinion of Shaniqua or Mohammed and their 5 kids on welfare. Something like 80% of immigrant Muslim families in Europe are on welfare. I don't think it's moral to take money from people who work to support those who wont work. I also don't think it's best for the advancement of the human race for lazy low iq people to be reproducing.

Then I question the limit. Like what if I wanted to buy a company or save enough to ensure my children's children never have to work? But now I cant because it was immoral of me to keep my money. Also how could anyone ever invest in companies if they only make enough to just live comfortably? Wouldn't this just end all large purchases from luxury goods to company take overs? What if I want to retire at 40 with 2 million? Does this mean no one can retire early because they cant save up nest eggs anymore?

tldr what you think is moral is not what I think is moral.

This.

I am poor and I hate us having to be on assistance. Right now we need it but I am not against rich people. They made their money and we can't force them to give it away.

That's kinda like when I had really long hair people would come up to me (women not men) and say "that's such a shame, don't you think you should donate your hair to those who have cancer?"

I was always like wtf!!? It's MY hair.

And morality is subjective OP. Just because YOU think people should give to the poor and charities, not everyone does.
Not that I'm against charities but I help out those around me first before I give to random charities that have to pay employees first. I do think it's nice when rich people give their money away but what about saving it for their children?

What makes the poor any more important than that man's family?

IME it's a rare discussion to have. A lot of the debate seems to be around acquisition, or how much is it OK for people to legally retain (eg. capitalism vs socialism debates).
people at the top would stop producing and owning businesses... sure there are a lot of lecherous leeches living on inheritance while offering nothing to the world, but i know many rich business owners who wouldn't even bother if they had everything taxed away... a better question is: why should the government deserve such a large cut for doing nothing extra for it? government relies on the people it represents to fund itself, and if they start taxing things at near 100% isn't that just another form of greed?

That's kinda like when I had really long hair people would come up to me (women not men) and say "that's such a shame, don't you think you should donate your hair to those who have cancer?"

I was always like wtf!!? It's MY hair.

And morality is subjective OP. Just because YOU think people should give to the poor and charities, not everyone does.
Not that I'm against charities but I help out those around me first before I give to random charities that have to pay employees first. I do think it's nice when rich people give their money away but what about saving it for their children?

What makes the poor any more important than that man's family?

Damn that's a lot of $$$$$

If I didn't have a husband and family I'd go be a stripper. Especially if it was at a club where they can't touch you.
Women that hate strippers are just mad that they're out of shape and can't dance.

Op would make me give free lap dances though because that's not fair to poor men who can't afford them.

Also as others have probably mentioned why would anyone work more than they have to once they reach the limit? Wouldn't that just be making them work for free beyond that point? Their labor is now funding someone else. This whole idea is tantamount to slavery.
