Thanks, Ill check it out.

My wife and I put all of our shared expenses on one credit card and split it down the middle when we pay it.

Think it averages around $700-800/month including rent as our cost of living.

It's good experience that can take you somewhere else. Try and stay positive, brother. After moving back home I stocked groceries in a supermarket, then washed dishes, before landing something "decent" now through a temp agency!

Everyone starts from somewhere

How about cutting the cord, any of you all done it? Been something I've looked into doing for a while but haven't sat down and looked into what all resources I can stream online from. I know about Kodi and all of it's sub-apps, kind of looking for something for live TV more than anything.

I'm looking into setting up an attic antenna to get local channels, supposed to be pretty good quality. Then I'd dump cable if it works out. I'm watching Netflix most of the time anyway

This is late, but brah, I highly recommend you read about stoicism. I'm not a religious person at all, but I really do think reading some spirituality like this will help a lot of people that worry about petty things (like how much they can consume) get over these insecurities. None of that stuff will make you happy because happiness is a mindset, not a destination.

I have a good job/career, but make a fraction of what a few of my really good friends make (a few of who are on pace to become millionaires by age 33). I'm as happy as a lark, but they still feel broke and unhappy for a myriad of reasons, but generally because they're realizing that no amount of stuff/prestige can make them happy.

Just put 11k in VTSMX, 3k in VBMFX. Have 12k in a low volatile ETF and will put 5k in VGSTX and the rest in bonds.

Hoping to make it crew! Im 26 and will let it ride.

You can convert Vanguard investor shares into Admiral shares and have a lower ER once they hit $10k. I.e. your VTSMX can be converted into VTSAX. No taxes on conversion, either

11k in VTSMX? Why not admiral shares (VTSAX) ?

Anyone here pretty much living off of savings and having their retirement contributions maxed out?

After taxes and retirement account contribution, my paychecks are teeny tiny, not enough to cover living expenses. Negative cash flow means that I'm basically taking the money I made interning when I was in school and putting it into a 401k that I didn't have access to at the time.

You can do it in the web UI immediately. There's a link that says "convert to admiral" if you go to the "buy and sell" link.I know first hand because I converted vtsmx to vtsax about a couple weeks ago.

You could be months waiting around from an email with them. From what I've read on other forums, their auditing seems to be done every few months. (ex: people being told to put more money if they withdrew to below 10k)

So this post likely belongs in the investing thread but I was curious if any of you were putting money away in investments for anything other than retirement. I already have a good retirement setup with my employer, but I'm hoping to get enough money put together to afford a nice down payment on a house. I just want to put my money somewhere where it can grow modestly and NOT lose out to inflation, not really looking to make bank with the returns. Would mutual funds or ETFs still be the way to go? this would be relatively short-term, so would bonds be a better bet in my case?

pov reps for help, of course.

A couple of pages ago the investment app ACORNS was briefly talked about. I've started invested a few hundred a month towards it. It creates a portfolio based on a questionnaire you get after downloading the app, You can modify the risk in the portfolio at any time. The fee is 1 dollar until the first 5k then .25% after.

I do. It doesn't really have a purpose tbh, no idea what I'll end up using it for. It's just "extra money" that never got into a retirement account.

If you use roth retirement accounts, there's really no reason to not max them so read up on that before doing anything. I say this because you can withdraw the contributions penalty free. Up to you what you put in it, depends on your risk/reward tolerance. Just pointing out the retirement/ non retirement thing. (read this as: don't take my advice, do your own research with regard to this).

I use discover, the customer service has been really good. IMO you shouldn't have enough in a savings account such that the difference between those rates should cause you to switch.

I read the bogleheads forums, and I read the bogleheads guide to investing book. The forum gets boring fast, its the same stuff posted over and over again it seems. I've read some from the money mustache guy, I thought he was nuts. He said you should spend no more than 10 percent of your take home salary on the total price of a car, assuming you paid for the car at once. In other words, you would need to make like 500k a year to buy a new corolla. Maybe that was the financial samuria, can't remember. I think a lot of people tend to spend too much on their car, but that is just absurd.
