can confirm
parents offered me no guidance in terms of career choices/etc
school counselors were fuking retarded
went to college immediately after high school, hadzeroreal world perspective/experience/etc, some 17 year old kid from a small town and somehow i was expected to decide what major to pick.
accumulated a nice chunk of debt for an essentially useless degree. in retrospect, yes i surely could have done more independent career research on my own and probably had a better outcome, but tbh at that point in my life i was overwhelmed with the social aspect of college and permanently intoxicated on the lofty promises of recruiters, counselors, etc who skillfully lead you to believe that upon graduation we would all have our pick of $80k+ salary jobs
no one ever said a word about the highly paid trades jobs, about the various benefits of the military, etc, it was just a goddamn bum rush to get every kid into college by any means necessary
not blaming anyone for the things that have happened, but the way the "system" is setup is highly disadvantageous

Millennial just dont want to work. Simple as that. I was a hiring manager for an entry level dealership department(lot porters). I wanted to change the direction of the position and hire young kids/young adults because it really is a decent job. Pays like 50c above min wage to start but youre guaranteed overtime(Time and a half) if you choose to stay and help out and you get full benefits after 90 days and a nice raise(typically $2-3 if youre a good worker). There aren't many entry level jobs that give you that but i kid you not, I hired 9 people most aged 18-23ish and only 2 of them made it to the 90 day mark. This job was a ****ing cake walk. We had our own automated car wash, 90% of the day was spent chilling in brand new cars with the ac/heater blasting in line for the automated car wash we shared with 3 dealerships and at the gas station a half mile away and STILL was too hard for the typical millennial because we had to walk around in 100 degree heat every now and then.
It wasn't until i got that job that i realized just how fuked we are in the future.

We can talk all day about what we think is happening on a large scale, but I can tell you personally most all of my peers (probably 85-90%) aren't very employable, rap hit this generation hard. Every kid growing up thought it was cool to not try hard, do drugs, sell drugs, and had the "**** the system" mentality. Now they're all struggling and a big chunk are idiots. Only a few certain friends are doing well and actually work hard.
I actually believe this is the case for most of the country. Just follow social media, most younger people are complete idiots politically and talk with slang/act ghetto and trashy because music made it cool.
Then they wonder why nobody wants them to professionally represent their company, which is where the real paying jobs are.
Generations really actually did get worse.

Man... you all need to think objectively and stop drinking the Kool-aid.
1.) More people with degrees= more supply than demand.
2.) When supply exceeds demand, prices are driven down (in this case wages).
3.) When prices are driven down, only the BEST and SMARTEST are in demand (basic survival/competition)
The Result:
You have a job market that is over saturated and with outsourcing and automation is shrinking. College degrees are great and our generation is well-educated, but simply not demanded.
This isn't a conspiracy or the fruits of a generation... its simple economics. A market correction will happen when the numbers get so bad that they will cause social unrest and the cycle will start a-new.
The take away? Innovate or die. Simple. This is merely evolution playing out economically.

And no, I'm not a millennial. Raised by a single mother who did her best but couldn't offer me very much.
Been work/supporting myself/living in my own place since I was 16.
Last I checked that does not fit the description of 99.9% of millennials.

"Youth Unemployment Soars in Past Decade"
Often described as disconnected youth, they are encountering greater competition from older workers for increasingly scarce entry-level jobs, especially in light of the recession. And a number of them contend with hurdles beyond their control, such as growing up in poverty, having few working adults as role models, attending low-performing schools and living with a single parent.

High unemployment among youth is devastating, not just for the individuals who spend months or even years trying to get hired but also for countries' economies -- and the world's -- the report noted.

I think an overlooked factor ITT is students going to colleges that have horrible placement rates upon graduation but never actually research it.
I have friends who went to colleges w a ~55% post graduation placement rate for their degree but are okay taking out large loans for a crappy chance at a job
Students who don't take advantage of internships or co-ops also goofed

If you want to make it big off the bat with no college degree and fresh out of highschool, go into sales. The skills you get from becoming a good salesperson are amazing. And not selling people bull**** but sales in things like cell phones or other **** where it's everyday things people are buying. Commission and hourly and you're *****.

It changed the culture of so many people here to be against "the man", not try hard, not talk professionally, not respect women, promoted sleeping around as much as possible/was anti family creation, pro drug use and crime to get money, etc.
Of course as people get older a lot grew out of it, but a lo didn't. You're impressionable when you're 16 and listening to that and idolizing that and then you get pressured into drugs. Drugs for this generation are extremely high and that messes them up for a long, long time.
Yeah, pop culture can really affect somebodies ability to make it.
If someone asked me, I'd say it's 50% culture (which was mostly brought on by rap... my favorite genre of music) and 50% brought on by the advancement of technology. Before, a basement dweller was lonely and had almost no entertainment. These days, he can be connected to every one of his friends playing amazing games, watching amazing movies, porn, whatever the kid wants. Seriously... what's his motivation to go get a job and do all that when he's got so much addicting entertainment right in front of him at home.

Millenials have it bad you say? Two younger generations will be competing with third world labour and machines on a much larger scale and the intellect-driven professions are increasing their barrier of entry every year.
A lot of experience isn't being passed on by the boomers and older Gen X'ers because of rules, regulations and $$$. My dad couldn't pass on his skills except to his family without resorting to H&S red tape and taxes up his ass.
Not sure what the future holds for these younger people when millenials can't pass on knowledge they don't know or refuse to do.

You act as if everyone was living in huge houses and living the GOAT life but in reality most baby boomers were poor and got in debt and lived paycheck to paycheck.
I interview a lot of kids coming out of college and about half of them think they should be given a managerial job right away. Most of them don't want to climb the corporate ladder.
But hey lets blame them because we live in a society that needs to blame someone else!!!

Go to Uni. Rack up a huge debt. Flaunt your redundant degree that has little to no meaning. "Where's ma job?" "Who's going to pay my student debt?" Lots of humble work available: "I don't want to do that".
Either get a degree that's useful, or start working early to pad up your resume, get certificates etc, learn to budget, work 1 even 2 crappy jobs to save, get out there and meet people, extend your social network. If you're lucky enough to be able to live with your parents, then you have no excuses to fail.

Saw a job posting for a sports team dietitian for a local prestigious prep academy. Requires masters degree, 3 yrs experience, CSSD "encouraged" (read: required - which is 1500 additional hours specialty practice within the field, usually volunteer and unpaid). Pay was $10/hr. The worst part is I'm sure they got someone
Not complaining since my current job is ok, but I'm pretty overqualified

It's not just unemployment. It's underemployment. A lot of jobs have wages that have not even come close to keeping up with inflation. I am now certified in one of those jobs. It's a job that is required for society to function too. The pay is about 1-2 dollars an hour more than it was 20 years ago. Meanwhile rent, bills, gasoline, groceries, etc have quadrupled since then.
Wages are stagnant for many professions. It's funny too because I have friends that have jobs like "synergy effective specialist" for startups and **** like that and they make 100k a year. When I ask them what they actually do, they can't answer me. They don't actually do anything (srs) yet the wages in these types of jobs are astronomical. Funny how that works.
Anyway, certain fields are going to be pretty much minimum wage only pretty soon and it's not going to go over well for society in general.

When I ask them what they actually do, they can't answer me. They don't actually do anything (srs) yet the wages in these types of jobs are astronomical. Funny how that works.
Anyway, certain fields are going to be pretty much minimum wage only pretty soon and it's not going to go over well for society in general.

It's just plain ridiculous. I mean, how frugal should people be to buy a house and buy essentials? Is not buying a smartphone seriously going to help someone's chances at buying a house? No.
Fantasy world economics at its best. It's just a conservative jerk off session to make themselves feel like they're making real arguments.
Spending $1,000 per year on stuff that isn't deemed "essential" will not make or break you, nor will it magically be enough in the future to afford a house, as much as conservatives like to dream it will.

"Every generation has its share of men who fully live the art of manliness. But there may never have been a generation when the ratio of honorable men to slackers was higher than the one born between 1914 and 1929. These were the men that grew up during the Great Depression. They’re the men who went off to fight in the Big One. And they’re the men who came home from that war and built the nations of the Western world into economic powerhouses. They knew the meaning of sacrifice, both in terms of material possessions and of real blood, sweat, and tears. They were humble men who never bragged about what they had done or been through. They were loyal, patriotic, and level-headed. They were our Greatest Generation."
