I think the point he's trying to make is this is probably the first black dominant movie to ever be released that wasnt;

-a charicature stereotype of doing drugs and bangin' hoes "in the hood" (The Friday movies/The House Party movies)
-Not a boring cringy bible thumpy educational movie with a wholesome lesson (The Madea movies)
-Not a documentary movie about Rosa Parks or Malcom X or MLK or slavery for the umpteenth time (Roots/12 years a slave/ etc)
-Nor is it a movie that has black people in it and the whole narrative of the characters existence is due to the fact that they're black (Get Out)

Its just an action adventure movie that "happens" to have a dominant black male cast.

IMO it isn't bad or good. It's a movie. Wakanda isnt going to make poor blacks stop being poor. This isn't some cultural shift. This is some in Hollywood trying to act like them making a movie with black people is virtuous. It's another movie trying to count some cash, while pandering to black people, I think. If they really cared, they'd look into policies and charity towards organizations that actually make a difference for poor and other black people.

I personally don't give a chit if hollywood wants to do this but lets not act like this is anything more than another movie.

Man...you know how many people I've encountered that assumed because I was black I was supposed to be some stereotype? Where do you think they get those ideas from?

Uhhh how about Coming to America with Eddie Murphy? That was made in 1984 and features an all black cast with three rich black characters - Eddie Murphy the PRINCE of a rich country and Mr McDowell the owner of a Mcdonalds AND the son of the Flo Glow hair products with his rich family

Do people really think that movies are a good representation of black people? That's scary as phuk. I would hope people would base their views of black people by actually spending time with them and making up their mind just like they should do for every other person/ethnicity/race.

To me, it is hard for me to draw that comparison as this is also a fantasy movie. If there is a movie that is a little more realistic, then I could see that.

Not trying to be preachy, I just think this is common sense and it worries me that people are trying to hold this movie up to something more.

Hollywoods last chance at Static Shock was the release of Black Lightning on CW. I havent' seen it yet, and i'm sure its okay i'm just not interested in it because its not Static Shock.

The problem with the Static Shock franchise is that it never belonged to DC OR Marvel. DC was contracted to use the character which is why DC characters appeared in a few episodes of the cartoon....then the license expired.....the show got cancelled and the company that made him went out of business.....so, the character is basically in limbo.

Most movie critics are SJW's. How the fuk else did moonlight not get a 45% on RT?

Of course it's going to do really well. It's a B level movie that gets bumped up to A+++ by critics for SJW reasons

okay, Coming to America was one. Any others?

thats the point i'm trying to make ("probably the first") there might be a couple more from the past 35 some odd years of cinematic history, but they are rare. I'd have to go on IMDB to find them if they exist.

Watching this Valentine’s Day with my gf. Excited as ****. She watched all Marvel movies with me, but kinda hesitant with this, cuz he said Black Panther looks kinda gay- scratching Bucky in Civil War(plus she has a big crush on Bucky) instead of punching. But in the end, I managed to talk her into it.

dc *******s on suicide watch, where this will make more than justice league! Lol.

I'm incredibly surprised by the laziness. It can't be the same place because that scene in Thor was a prison scene for the gladiators on a planet in another flippin' galaxy.

Looking closer at the pic...lol they didn't even try to make it look different. The rack of weapons are all in the exact same place and everything, lol. I probably wouldn't have noticed unless someone brought it up (like this pic), but now when I go see it, i'm gonna be looking for this scene. Oh well, its not the first time movies have done this;


maybe it wouldn't have been a big deal if the movies were spaced further apart, but thor Ragnarok literally came out, what, 3 months ago?

Hollywood makes movies about "black struggle" because the African American community as a whole resents blacks who deviate from "hood culture" (ie: Uncle Toms). Very few American blacks want to watch a movie about a bunch of Uncle Toms who succeed by acting like white guys; dudes like that are basically shunned out of the community in real life. This movie "works" because it portrays a fictitious African society that allows a sense of imagination, and since its Africa, the "imagination" is that these people didn't become the most developed nation in the world by emulating whites, they did it through their own sheer black excellence. You see, success attained by "acting white" is frowned upon. This movie is cultural masturbation.

I guess that kinda makes sense, but i'm black and have never noticed that in my "community"

how many black people are writing comic books? seriusly, why would you expect white people to write comics based in africa?

i personally hate comic book movies in general so i dont care if its good or not but if you want more movies with majority black casts and that arent about “struggling” then go make them yourself.

my point is that there seems to be an assertion being made, in general, that white hollywood filmmakers owe certain groups certain types of movies. if you want more like Black Panther then go make them.

also, i gotta say, with todays climate, there is no doubt in my mind that an overwhelming amount of reviewers are terrified to give this movie anything less than glowing score. just because they know they will be called racist. combine that with the fact that comic book movies are grossly overrated on rottentomatoes to begin with and i seriously doubt this movie drops below a 98%
