Yeah most movies about black folks are about black people struggling or some chit.

This is exactly what America doesn't need right now. Why does everything have to be about race and politics? It's a god damned movie, nothing more and nothing less. Anyone who tries to make it about more than entertainment needs to have their head examined.

Black Panther is a superhero version of a border patrol agent, yet liberals love him.

Will watch it because of this guy:

You can be as apolitical, and unbiased, and empathetic, and everything else you want to be. But not realizing how things might be perceived in the environment around you is just head in the sand type of stuff.

Reading through this not sure how this helps American culture or black culture. When the story is set in Africa. Africans have a completely different culture than African Americans.

Do people really think that movies are a good representation of black people? That's scary as phuk. I would hope people would base their views of black people by actually spending time with them and making up their mind just like they should do for every other person/ethnicity/race.

To me, it is hard for me to draw that comparison as this is also a fantasy movie. If there is a movie that is a little more realistic, then I could see that.

Not trying to be preachy, I just think this is common sense and it worries me that people are trying to hold this movie up to something more.

African culture and African American culture are completely different, hence why African immigrants come to America and become doctors and lawyers despite all that pesky "systematic racism" that supposedly keeps their American counterparts in the ghettos. Just because you are black, doesn't mean that you identify with every black culture on the planet. Unless you are suggesting that African Americans are going to see this movie and find some newfound drive to start behaving like their African counterparts (huge value on education, family structure, zero connection to rap culture, etc), the guy you are quoting is right: why would glorifying a completely alien culture help African Americans?

the following is just my opinion:

Media is the biggest way to have an influence on people - more effective than arguing face to face (because movies are subtle), and less impactful than actually immersing someone in a different lifestyle/viewpoint (but no one ever goes out of their way to experience what the other side sees)

So instead we have to depend on media, which is consumed by everyone and influences them in little ways. Right now when you think of an all black movie, your mind is no doubt going to a few of the classics like Friday or Boyz in the Hood, or if you're thinking more recent, Tyler Perry movies. Movies about being disenfranchised/in the hood and those problems. Not representative of all black people, not even close.

So instead, we finally have an almost all-black movie that's got nothing to do with that ****. A sci-fi/comic book movie that just happens to be set in Africa with black people, instead of some **** like Little Tyrone from down the block using magic to defeat his dead-beat drug dealing (step)father.

Hopefully this will open up the gates for movies where it's different genres with casts who just happen to be black, instead of revolving around being black, how black they are, and how they can use the tropes of whatever genre they are in to overcome being black.

You talk about skin deep value and trash the fact that I'm American. I have more in common with a white living in a trailer in American than I do somebody living in a African village. Halfbreed show I'm not ashamed of being born to a black and white American. If that bothers you not my problem.
