i dont think its ruining our society directly, society ruins itself. But like someone said above it puts everything under a magnifying glass, depending on what your promoting through social media is what will destroy society (e.g. liberalism). And also i dont think just because people seem to be promoting materialism alot through social media doesnt make materialism a bad thing. Its ok to want nice things, helps us push forward to being able to afford said nice things.

Damage is done, especially for those who didn't grow up without it. We didn't have Myspace until I was 19 or 20 I think. By then I had already figured out how to make friends, and be socially interactive.

Just go to any store, look at the people standing in line & see how long it takes them to pull out their phones. Under 30 seconds, max. I was in a great clips the other day. 40yr old grown man to my left, 13yr old teenager to my right. Both on their phone aimlessly scrolling. F***** sick. Put away your GD phones and act like you dont need them for five minutes please.

But if you do this at most places there is nobody to talk to because everyone is on their phones. The people that aren't on their phones don't talk to anyone either. Such a weird world we live in. I will use my phone sometimes and just keep it in my pocket other times.....doesn't make a difference because everyone is so disconnected

yes it allows people to develop their ego from the comfort of their own home. no social interaction is required to give others a perception of the life you live.

Most definitely.

People these days look forward to chatting with their buddies over whatsapp rather than go on a 30 minute commute to catch up in person.

Also, rumours and gossip spread much quicker now and people sensationalise small and trivial things that did not matter before.

What a time to be alive!

I agree that attention whores(both men and women) on social media are annoying. However I don't think social media has caused society to be more selfish. I think people have always been like this but they just never had social media. If ******** would've existed in the 70's people would've used it in the same way I guarantee it. Proof of this are the people of previous generations going crazy on social media. I have quite a few coworkers in their 40's/50's who post everything on social media.

The attention whores that post everything on social media like posting pictures at a restaurant or a bar are annoying but there are some cool posts and groups. I like looking at different hiking and vacation spots being posted. Can give you ideas for futures trips. But some people feel the need to post pictures of their food and or to post emotional or ''inspirational'' speeches. I just ignore that chit.

social media is a sociopaths wet dream. There is a certain person I particularly dislike, and looking through his ******** I noticed him stood outside his home with his kids in school uniform. Within 24 hours I knew his home address, where his kids go to school and where him and his wife works. Peoples narccism will be the death of them.

And social media has indeed harmed society,it has actually made people less social . It has made them obessessed with themselves and not interested in the world around them. I think it is in part responsible for the growth of mental health problems and sucidiality amongst the young. Getting far too obsessed with yourself and a very small self contained world of predictable people means, if anything happens outside that world which is unpredictable or unpleasant far too many people go to pieces. It has made people more selfish, people may virtue signal about children in far away lands in poverty but not see the decay in their own society when they step out the front door.

Yes. Industrial Society and it's Future talks about this. Ted Kacyzinski's marketing may have been off, but his arguments were spot on, and we are beginning to see them come to fruition.

I think it makes me more motivated etc. Because if we were in like the 1950s or whatever, I'd just think "oh im with the hottest girl in my town/area" "oh I have the nicest car" "oh I make the most" and put my feet up and stop working.

But when you know there are people out there like Dan Bilzerian - it really puts it into perspective about how far away you really are from making it.
You kind of just summed up what is causing all the mental illness, people just can't be content with what they have. They then try and be like someone else they see on ********/instagram, compete with them and make themselves sick when they fail. Wouldn't it feel good to think 'I have the best car' 'best girl', and put your feet up?

What the people who get sick don't realise is, that person /people they are jealous of ,or make them feel inadequate, social media only provides a snap shot into their lives. They don't realise for instance how in debt the other person might be in thanks to that car.... nothing is as it seems.

Again like I've said before.. To each their own. Nobody makes you get involved in social media. Either do it and enjoy it or stay away.. You wouldn't like my ******** cause I share food pics. Funny face pics. Random thoughts. Video game videos. Bicycle videos. I sell my shirts on ********. I post photographs I take. Videos I take. I'm reminded of birthdays I would never know about. I like seeing what my friends and family are doing. Social media is great if used correctly. It's not for everyone though just like talking on the phone isn't for me.

Eh, not so sure about that. The main arguments against social media (comparing your life to someone else's is the biggest one I can think of) can also be attributed to television, print media, and about any entertainment you can think of. It's not the case that such platforms destroy society - they simply speak to an already existing audience looking to get their view affirmed.

Happiness has always been a competition. Whether it's leasing a car you can't afford or taking selfies with those stupid fuking dog ears, people are still weirdos.

That being said, I will concede that social media has created a platform where you can literally block anyone who offers a counterpoint out of the conversation. I think that's bled into society too now. There are so many wedge issues that you can't even offer an opinion about because idiots have surrounded themselves with others who think exactly like them and it devolves into a libtards/cuckservatives circle jerk. A society where people aren't exposed to ideas different than their own is unhealthy.

From a data retention stand point ******** is monstrous. All others are insignificant.

perspective/10

Edit:But I do agree with your statement. Mainly because FB is now taking a back seat to the forefront of instant posting of pics and hash tagging etc etc....

Plus porn rules all, and FB isn't good for that. I was sleeping with a cam girl and she went from 3k followers to 4500 in 2 nights that she used my junk on her live show. She also does paid SnapChat and sends custom videos etc etc....

My junk is famous to a few thousand people.....can I put that on a resume?

Ok. I don't use the others - I just know that my nieces and nephews are on SC and IG ALL the time.

Spontaneous social interaction is often frowned upon and met with contempt meaning that socializing has become a thing limited to a very small number of places and occasions. People have a harder time meeting and feeling safe and comfortable talking to people. They will not put themselves out there as much because society has shunned it. Social relationships are glorified transactions (I'll give you my time if you give me entertaining conversation). People only care about what you can provide for them, and if something changes and you can no longer provide that, you'll be discarded in the same way as a broken watch.
Best post ITT.
Went to a social media craze school and everyone there had chit personalities. They always worried about who they were hanging out with, how cool the party was, etc.
Funny I had friend I went skiing with a few weekends ago and she said, "you just talk to random people all the time! That's so random and awkward!" She said after I was talking to the operator while waiting for the chair lift to move. Apparently making small conversation is random and awkward, just lol.
