I’m so glad some people even on the misc are seeing past Goggins & his bullchit. He’s so clearly running away from psychological issues, & this is coming from a guy who used an eating disorder & overexercise in the past to deal with his trauma. I have to fight my perfectionism & my desire to “give 100%” all the time. Just because most people get fat cuz they hate themselves doesn’t mean there aren’t people like me & Goggins who push ourselves continually & accept pain over pleasure. Life is a BALANCE & it disgusts me when I see people put DG & others like him on a pedastal. The guy’s a good athlete who pushes himself harder because he quite clearly ignores almost all other facets of his life. If you put yourself 100% into any one thing, you got 0% left.

Wow. As a fatty I'm always impressed by crazy endurance stuff. Good for him for having a "STFU and do it" attitude.

Edit: Read the rest of the thread. LOL-ing hard that the MISC will cope hard to excuse all kinds of other ways people deal with psychological damage (alcohol, etc) but are chitting on this guy for running ultramarathons and using extreme physical means.

Something to consider...

David's approach incorporates mental training, so he does things like 'The cookie Jar' technique (reminding himself of all the things he survived), visualization, and encouraging self talk whilst exercising.

IMO if you aren't incorporating that, then you probably won't benefit into other areas. Positive self talk and visualization are shown in research to be beneficial for mental health, David encourages people to those things in conjunction with doing what they fear or don't like, so that their 'demons' come to the surface, and they can overcome them with self belief.

His endurance training is just a vehicle for mental training, he says so himself, he actually says that exercise is his path but he advise anyone to go towards whatever it is that they don't like doing (he says that the worst thing for him is running).

Here is a video of a different athlete explaining a similar concept of using exercise to avoid facing your own psychological issues.

whats the point of running a marathon then? are you delivering something to someone 26 miles away?

whats the point of pursuing a 315 lb bench? whats precisely the point?

the physical pursuit's of pretty much 99% of society contribute nothing to the greater good . does kiril sarychev's 738 lb raw bench advance society? no. neither does goggins 3.5 hours on the versaclimber.

they just stand to show others what is possible, if he wants to destroy his body then thats on him, its not much different from any high level athlete in any sport lol

No, he explictly said that he was happy. On the same podcast that you said you listened to.
The reason I even give enough of a chit to post what I do is because I followed the 'Give 100% or your worthless" philosophy that he and others suggest for years and it brought me to the brink of a psychological break.
He said in another view that he used to be hard on people under him in the military, because he had that mentality. He said that he eventually learned that everyone is on their own path, and doesn't need to be like him.

He also literally said in a video I watched yesterday - (paraphrasing) 'don't try to be like me, or be like somebody else, be the best you that you can be'. He also said that endurance training is his path, but he encourages people to do whatever it is that they don't like or fear.
It warped my mind so badly that I destroyed several relationships in my life and missed years of enjoyment in my 20's because I had to 'always be working' and in the end it only left me with crippling depression and self-resentment.

You're so sure I could never understand that mind-set despite the fact that for years, that WAS my mind-set. Which is why I aggresively advice people against it. It's an unsustainable, physically and psycholgically masochistic mindset based on a zero sum game you can NEVER win. Thankfully I got the help I needed to regain balance and understand that for 99% of people on this planet that this stuff is not healthy.
Yeah, I honestly don't think that going balls to the wall every day like Goggins does is healthy for 99% of people.

He even said in the vid yesterday that he blew out his adrenals, and suffered from anxiety and a bunch of health problems, due to going hard. Now he spends 1.5 hours a night doing Yoga/stretching, before going to bed.

I do think he would benefit from counselling, but maybe he's fine.

the turds that drop from goggin's chitter are more capable of greatness then you will ever be in your entire life.

obviously goggins has issues, anyone capable of achieving what he has is not going to be a normal, healthy, or "balanced" person

his mindset and ideals arent applicable to most people, because most people arent capable of delaying the gratification of their morning doughnut and 40 oz coke.

If you don't like goggins message or ideas cool, thats your opinion but a lot of people get a lot of good out of what he has to say.

In another thread I mentioned that I used to read special forces book avidly when I was a kid. The one thing that struck me over time is that almost all of them have a history of utter poverty, mental abuse and or physical abuse. I challenge you to find an auto-biography of a special forces soldier that doesnt include clear depictions of abuse or abject poverty. I've literally never read a book from a special forces soldier that didnt include these background experiences...not one book. I personally believe the reason why 95% of the average population washes out special forces is because a well adjusted person does not have the tools to deal with that level of mental/physical abuse. The vast majority of people that make it through are the type that have already been defined by some sort of abuse. These types of people consider the abuse they handle in special forces "normal" and have the mental protection methods already in place, so they make it through..

...are these people "tougher", yes. Does that mean mental toughness due to abuse is healthy or a goal any of us should aim to achieve, LOL - NO.
I spoke to a friend of mine who is a martial arts instructor, I said that I agreed with Stefan Molyneux (I used to be a fan, not anymore) when he said that he beleived that people who practise martial arts (that involve sparring, or rolling) have some trauma based around violence.

I think that was too rash, but I do believe that the long term practitioners probably had either a abusive childhood or they witnessed routine violence. Every martial arts instructor I've spoken to had some 'madness' in their childhood.

Every long term martial artist or violent person that I spoke to either was physically abused in some way, or grew up around routine violence.

The best fighters in terms of combat sports don't tend to come from healthy backgrounds. So what you wrote seems to be confirmation, of what a very well respected (in the UK) martial artist that I met wrote 'All the best fighters, whether martial artists or not, that he has met has some 'madness' in their childhood.

Both my friends who are martial arts instructors had a violent childhood, 4 other martial arts instructors that I got to know intimately did too (Although one of them got heavily into martial arts, due to being 18 or 19 and suffering PTSD due to being glassed in a nightclub. So technically he wasn't a child, but it seemed to happen early on enough that it heavily shaped his mind - up until that point he was just an average middle class guy).

You might like this Essay from an expert on violence prevention, about the psychology of people prone to regular violence...

You'd know it cuz you clearly live up the man's ass. And I've achieved more than anyone I know in some areas of my life, and I always shake my head when people act like they're pieces of chit because they eat too many fuking doughnuts & "insert succesful hardworker here" has life figured out because they torture themselves in ONE aspect of their life. What turns me off about Goggins & his dickriders is the fact that he prattles on about how he used to be bullied for being stupid, but he succeeded by working hard & using his body for success. What about his mind? From hearing him speak, I assume passing some rudimentary college classes would prove harder for him than any race he's ever won. A fat person wishing they could be like Goggins is misguided because they're leaving out the fact that he clearly isn't using as much "willpower" as he lets on. Sould overweight college grads who struggled through college inspire Goggins just as much? Quit with the hero worship, boyo. Running away from your emotional and intellectual insecurities is way different than running because it's actually beneficial for you. Brb getting diet inspiration from anorexia victims.

I could be wrong, I listened to it several months ago. Though I'm almost certain I remember him directly addressing the issue along the lines of "People ask me whether I'm happy, and the answer I give them is that I am satisfied with my accomplishments. That's it" Thats paraphrasing but I distinctly remember hearing it and going 'Geez this guy has phucking problems.

I'm not going to go through the whole podcast again to timestamp it but i'm 95% sure he mentioned happiness and was really vague about whether he is happy or not

love this dude after his interview on jre.

The only thing I think people should take from this dude, is to keep working towards your goal even when you're too tired (or lazy). Anything more than that is ridiculous. Listen to your body. Working to the point of self harm doesn't do you any good.

Okay so because he's mastered a couple of aspects like Elite Military Operator, only man to complete SEALs, Delta and Green Beret training, world record holder, professional motivation speaker etc that's not enough because now he has to pass some college courses to measure up to your definition of success?

Lol @ misc psychologists

Can't we just admire what he's done with his life and not criticize him for not being perfect? No one is perfect.

If you want LIFE TIME INJURIES from pushing yourself to hard training for a race that NO ONE GIVES A PHUCK ABOUT and literally doesn't benefit you in any measureable way then thats on you. The guy is 43 and has already said that he has dozens of injuries. Let's see how he feels when he is 60 and can't even get out of his chair because he phucked his body past the point of no return.
he retired from the military so he's set for life in regards to medical. i wouldnt doubt that he has other medical disabilities awarded from the VA so in addition to his military pension and VA disability check, and his side gigs (motivational speaking, books, etc), he's financially well off to keep doing those things.

w/o his sources of income, he wouldnt be able to keep doing those things

I'm not going to go through the whole podcast again to timestamp it but i'm 95% sure he mentioned happiness and was really vague about whether he is happy or not
In that Joe Rogan podcast, he mentioned people asking if he was happy - and he built it up as to say he was happy of his success, but instead said "driven". There's been other interviews and articles where he actually stated how happy he was. I've read them awhile back and like you, don't really feel like going through to find them.

The man's mind was groomed to be a failure since childhood. He was constantly abused, went through severe racism, and faced mostly rejection. Most people give in to the negativity and accept their reality... he didn't - and here you are worried about him passing a college class? Lmao ok bro keep reaching.

If said overweight college grad went against all odds to get where they are now, put in extra effort through hard times instead of half assing or giving up, and went above and beyond accomplishing their goals - yes. The message behind it is push yourself to the next level and don't become complacent. Get out of your comfort zone andobtain the goals you want to obtain. You don't have to go to the extreme like he did, he's said this numerous times... but most people give up far too easy on their goals and get comfortable in a place of failure. This is all relative to the things they are trying to do. He's not trying to be educated like the college grad, but he CAN take the dedication the college grad has and apply it to his own goals.

If Goggins has severe psychological problems I'd love to hear your take on the other 99% of society that sits in a hamster wheel of drudgery. Of course any of these ultra people (skydivers, wingsuit flyers, rock climbers, big wave riders, ultra runners, olympians, etc) hold themselves to ridiculous standards. Once you've gone beyond, the only place to go is further. Most of these people would rather live a short life of badassery than a long life of drudgery. Ronnie Coleman states that when reflecting on his torn up body.

Do you honestly think at 60 this guy is going to look back and go... "Well damn... i shouldn't of been a Navy Seal, i shouldn't of done the Kona Ironman, i shouldn't of done Badwater, i shouldn't of broken the world record in pull-ups, etc, etc...". Fuk no he's not.

And nobody gives a fuk about? This guy has inspired millions... and he didn't do it from taking a bunch of instagram selfies. His fame is as organic as it comes.
