It isn't really the same though. Athletic feats translate almost directly into the ability to survive in the real world. Athletic competitions were historically used as a way for warriors to stay in shape. I would bet that an NFL running back would straight up murder the average guy on the street in hand to hand combat, would be better at catching a deer, building a shelter, pretty much anything that requires physical ability. That is how athletics evolved.

The video game guy, however, isn't adding any tangible value to his life or that of his tribe. All they are doing is clicking a button.

I always thought this, but recently I kind of started to get it. I mean, I've never watched Ninja or any of those streamers on Twitch, but I've seen DrDisrespect clips on YouTube and he puts in some effort to the character and can be kinda funny. I guess if you really enjoy watching them, and get several hours of entertainment a night out of these guys, I can understand giving up a few bucks from time to time. Better than giving to some thot titty streamer just for having a low cut top on.

He's not the "best" player (certainly better than 99.9% of anyone who will ever touch this game like professional athletes are better than 99.9% of the population at their sport), but he's the most marketable and the first major streamer of Fortnite. He got a lot of hype when Drake played with him.

The way Twitch works is that he can "livestream" his games and people can donate to him (usually people donate to show support or love to the streamer, maybe to troll), and/or they can subscribe to him (same idea, showing support and love). He also is sponsored and has YT videos and all that extra jazz.. but it's not like he's just passively doing nothing to earn this. He streams a LOT of hours (not like your typical 9-5).

How do you figure? I'd wager that any professional level athlete would be far better off in a survival / hand to hand combat situation than a random man off the streets. They are stronger, faster, bigger, able to withstand more before injuries, etc... You don't have to be smart to catch food and build a shelter, but being able to life a 200 lb log and run for miles would help.

It's entertainment. Pure and simple. Most knuckle draggers in the society prefer to watch NFL/NBA/NHL etc. and get all religious about it, spend money and countless hours obsessing over it. This is no different than a top athlete making a ton of money. It's about who draws the most viewers/fans, not raw talent, although this dude is obviously really good at doing it. Steaming also has an element of entertainment, in that you can't just be good, you also have to say witty **** and entertain the nerds who are going to watch you for hours a day.

And to those who are saying it's easy because anyone can game, go ahead and play the dude. You'll get wrecked so quickly it'll make your head spin...you have about as much chance of beating this guy in the game as you do of trying to beat a linebacker in the NFL. It's just not going to happen.

Like it or not, gaming is becoming a viable alternative to professional sports. Jeff Bezos obviously caught onto that when he bought Twitch a few years ago. There's a huge global audience who doesn't get or isn't interested in traditional sports. So this is the alternative, and it's extremely lucrative. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

I never understood how someone can donate money to a streamer unless its maybe someone starting off that could use the money. Why on earth would you "donate" to someone making millions of $'s. The standard rate is that the streamer gets half the sub amount. Big streamers like Ninja, or Shroud, will have contracts that pay them more than that. Lets say that Shroud makes $3 for every $5 subscription: that is $155,442 per month.

Agreed on Fortnite (and PUBG) professional play being a joke. The game is not designed for competitive play (and that's ok, not everything has to be), but people have to force this competitive agenda.

The only idea I can think of for people wanting to donate to streamers (outside of already subbing) is to troll and be on stream for 5 seconds with the streamer reading their message. That part is sad and I agree.

I didn't understand Twitch either, but for some reason a few years ago I watched The International and it kind of hooked me. I had never even played Dota 2 before, but between the commentators and the players, it was entertaining as hell. I'd heard of "esports" before, but thought it was kind of ridiculous. And The International was the first time I'd ever watched someone else play a game (hadn't even done so on YouTube).

Anyway, pretty crazy to think how Ninja blew up so fast. A year ago he was kind of just one of the "other guys" playing PUBG with Doc and other streamers. I figured Shroud kind of set the bar on what streamers could make for the next several years, but Ninja just crushed it. And that's after Shroud kind of dethroned Summit.

And now I sound like a giant fukking nerd because I'm name dropping streamers.
