Anderson? He also had awesome takedown D and BB bjj grappling and wrestling skills. Without it his opponents would always take him down right away as part of their strategy and beat him on the ground.

Elite strikers admit they would lose if grappling is allowed, notice how Floyd didn’t fight Connor with grappling allowed.

I think many of you might be confused when you see dominance of someone like prime Crocop and think that striking by itself is enough, but Crocop trained hard with the best grappler in the world at the time so that he can defend takedowns. Benny “The Jet” Urgudez also trained with a legendary grappler to prepare for Gracie challenge (and Gracies promptly backed out of the fight when they learned of this)

Maybe movies and popularity of boxing clouds your mind. But history shows that pure grappler usually beats pure striker.

Grappling can dictate if the fight either stands up or go's to the ground.

You have someone like GSP one of the goat martial artist with zero highschool, collegiate wrestling background, who even had to change his game up and understand the importance of wrestling given in a fight that involves both striking and grappling.
Notice how predictable this has become. When we learn that a fight like Bret Rogers VS Josh Barnett is announced it’s as if we already take for granted that Josh will take him down and sub him in a minute or two, and it almost always happens exactly that way. Sergey VS Josh, same thing. You can see it from a mile away. it almost becomes a question of “can this fighter wrestle?” If the answer is no, then if his opponent can wrestle we already know what the outcome of the fight will be. It’s that predictable.

Yeah, Gokor.

They'd have had to put Rickson in at UFC 1 if Gokor showed up...lol

Benny still teaches kickboxing at Gokor's gym I think.

How about a grappler physically going to Thailand and calling out a Thai boxer?

Skip to the 2:00 mark to see the easily predictable outcome.

P.S. This guy's wrestling moves weren't near the level as a D1 Wrestler yet he still made it look easy. The halfass armbar he ended up with wasn't even needed, simple ground and pound would have made that dude cry for his mom.

He isnt a pure striker. Neither is jon jones or even Conor mcgregor.

For guys who respectively like to keep it standing have grappling training, hence takedown defence/recovery, submission escapes ect.

Anderson Silva is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jui Jitsu, getting it straight from the motherland. He has 8 submissions in the mix of his pro wins as well. BJJ helps in those scrambles when it hits the floor, it allows him to work his way back up to the feet and/or survive until the bell rings so he can start standing again for the next round.

Firstly, the thread is asking if you had to chose one. (I had chosen sambo since as a single art it covers both grappling and striking)

Its common sense by now any combination of striking & grappling > single discipline> zero training

The scenario where fights possibly have other ppl involved which if that is the case its best to avoid the whole thing completely and obviously be on your feet and i'll go as far to say have grappling/takedown defence to avoid going to the ground when in a scramble.

However, one on one in a street fight were there is room for both individuals fighting and witnesses are around but no one else will get involved, a pure grappler will maul a pure striker. (And this is coming from someone who actually has competed both in muay thai and bjj).

Ofcourse if it were a muay thai artist with a wrestling background vs a pure grappler, ill go with the muay thai guy who has take down/grappling defence

Again, MMA fighter with grappling base vs pure MT, of course the MMA fighter is going to win. I have never once debated this point, that if the wrestler/grappler has some striking base he will win almost every time. Only on the misc do I have to repeat myself over and over. You're literally proving a point nobody ****ing made.

It's true Silva has grappling ability, but look at his pre-leg break fights in his prime. His striking power was ruthless.
As for the UFC in the 90's (aka Graycie infomercial) you had strikers w/ no grappling experience vs grapplers who knew grappling AND trained against striking, so the outcome doesn't necessarily prove much.
Furthermore, most elite strikers don't even bother going into MMA, they go into kickboxing, K-1 etc. Most MMA grapplers have never fought with an elite striker.
But history shows us time and again...when an elite striker DOES enter the MMA Cage (Silva, Cro Cop, Cung Le, etc.)...They tear the place up.

you need both good striking and grappling in MMA. They (silva, cro cop, cung) are still well rounded and are not pure strikers when competing in MMA. They still have to worry or be aware of being taken down or submitted.

Silva vs maia
Silva vs lutter
Silva vs sonnen
Silva vs henderson

Are examples of silva using grappling. He even had a few submission wins earlier in his mma career

You'll need both striking and grappling, with wrestling/grappling dictating if the fight either stays on the feet or go's to the ground.

Even when strikers began training grappling defence (which quickly happened, after the first 3 UFCs at least), wrestlers like Dan Severn, Mark Kerr, and Mark Coleman were still dominating them.
Furthermore, most elite strikers don't even bother going into MMA, they go into kickboxing, K-1 etc. Most MMA grapplers have neverfought with an elite striker.

Cung Le never became a champion. Also, Cung Le was an All-American high school wrestle and a state champion. He also trained Sanda and Sambo (both arts train striking and grappling). He was a good grappler, as well as being a great striker.

Cro cop was awesome.

Silva was a brilliant striker, but was also very good at BJJ (subbing Chael Sonnen off his back).

There have been a number of high level K1 fighters who crossed into MMA and they didn't 'tear the place up'.

Alistair Overeem was a K1 champion, he never became a UFC champion (he became a Strikeforce and Dream champion, at a time when the talent pool was very poor compared to the UFC). (Interesting, Alistair went from doing poorly in MMA, to switching to K1 and becoming world champ, then went back to MMA and never became a world champ in a high level organization like the UFC.)

Semmy Schilt was a K1 champion, he did become a Pancrase champion, but when he went to Pride and the UFC (a higher talent pool) he never became champion.

Mark Hunt k1 champ, never became an MMA champ.
