The science behind psychology would suggest that people who do things as heinous as someone like Bundy did are typically both born with a predisposition to psycopathic feelings/lack of feelings, and had a terrible upbringing. The criminal psychiatrist/psychologist dude who interviewed mob hitman and general serial killer Richard Kuklinske went into good detail about it.

I have borderline personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder and traits of anti social personalty disorder {sociopathy} as well as complex ptsd, diagnosed by a psychiatrist and assessed by several others including a forensic psychiatrist, this is because unlike most men with my history and current issues I was not put in a prison when I finally snapped but was instead declared to be not in control of myself and I was sectioned under the mental health act. I went so crazy the crown prosecution service said it wasn't in public interest to prosecute me and I was sent to a medium secure unit called brockfield house . I have discussed my life ,from adulthood to childhood experiences as well as the various mental illness's and criminality within the generations of my family with several psychologists also. I also have spoken to several other patients male and female who have done worse, lesser or similar things to what I did. I would say what causes people like us, is a mix of factors .But not everyone is the same as sometimes a single factor has a greater weight, for instance sometimes drug abuse is involved which makes the personality disorder worse, other times drug abuse is not involved and it's person how the person is . I would say there are some commonalities though. There tends to be a family history of mental illness, maybe not always severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, but often depression and anxiety. There is often also a family history of violence, generational violence which causes dysfunction within a family. Then a child is born who due to genetics or trick of nature is born 'sensitive' and maybe a bit slow in development. He/she is then brought up in that kind of family. If the senstive child was brought up in a more stable family, if he hadn't had such a difficult time in school due to bullying and isolation /feeling different, it's possible both he and society might 'get away with it' and he becomes a pretty productive law abiding stable adult. Unfortunate that sometimes does not happen.
I have been told at various times by different 'professionals' that I and my brother 'never had a chance', My brother has the same issues as me but to a lesser extent. He wasn't given the 'attention' I was given by my sick in the head mother. I have also been told the doctors were shocked I have managed to be in society without getting into trouble for so long and it gives them hope I won't do it again and go down the same bad routes I did again. I was basically a classical ticking time bomb . Fortuntely when I blew up, I attempted to chop up a minor league drug dealer with a machete in the street because he had been blasting bass music from his property and after I asked him to turn it down he threatened me , luckily for him and me I was in a my underwear and when I was chasing him down a crowded street {apparently someone ran into the road to avoid me and caused a minor car crash on the road} I cut my foot on broken glass and he got away but the doctors believe as I do if I have caught him I would have indeed chopped him up. I could have done much worse, and I privately think the reason the law went easy on me was just who had chased down the road,so I got lucky and was given another chance as no one likes a drug dealer no one would have missed him . Couple of years in a secure unit and I was let out.
But anyway, I understand people like bundy, deep down it all stems from anger, hatred of society, and a deep feeling of inadequacy no matter how charming and likeable he might have seemed at times.Deep down he absolutely despised himself. As I do, I despise myself more than I do other human beings. I have a different take on society, human beings ,life in general to other people, But I have learnt that if I want to not go down the route I went down again and get into trouble with the law I need to keep myself around other people and not self isolate, as the more I isolate the more unpleasant my thoughts and urges are.
