Most normal people aren't going to ever be in a situation where they are going to be threatened by a cop like this. If this guy took a bullet to his brain it would be because he acted like a complete moron escalating a simple douchebag cop encounter to a life or death situation.

2) I live in a newly "gentrified" urban area and a lot of people don't understand the fine line that has to be ridden by law enforcement to keep things safe for people in nice dwellings surrounded by dangerous individuals. There are lots of people who will pose as innocent do-gooders who are actually scouting areas for things to steal or vandalize, etc. It is the job of the police to do their best to discourage these types of people from thinking they can get away with said crimes. I absolutely hate the idea that you should be asked to verify ID or residence on the spot by police but this guy obviously fit the profile of someone who had been causing problems in the area and was trespassing if he was in fact not a resident.
3) I'm not a cop but those of you who are so eager to play monday morning quarterback in situations like these obviously have no idea what it's like to be in this position and to try to do things perfectly the first time around when confronting someone. When the person being spoken to by the officer refuses to comply with his request to sit down they are automatically violating a law and the officer simply cannot walk away at that point. It's against their training.

Now, the scoping occurs during daylight hours by normal regular people. This guy was out of place and was acting suspicious. We get a ton of those kinds of calls every..single..day.

In a nutshell: self-initiated work in order to prevent commercial burglaries is a thing.

I don't know the facts about this incident, nor do I care. Just shedding some light on why he started questioning the guy in the first place. So for people like wincel, stick to your office job. You don't know chit about how this world works.

Most normal people who belong there would be happy to show ID because they understand that the cop is just doing his job keeping the riff raff out of nice areas where they don't belong.

If you are a criminal or criminal enabler or just some jackass with a chip on their shoulder who likes to dress like a homeless person I can understand where you are coming from but you're still wrong. Normal people don't think or act this way.
All of these. The cop was doing his job properly. The guy was being belligerent because he has been taught to be so and has people like the miscers in this thread to defend him. I am shocked at how delusional and out of touch so many miscers are in so many respects—especially with law enforcement. That is a good officer and it is a shame he had to resign because of scum, fools, and the trash.

Yeah, cops should know when to deescalate a situation, this one didn't. I can understand him approaching him, if there were breakins or suspicious things going on (if that's even true), but it was evident very quickly this was not that and he should have apologized, explained why he did it and left. Some people can't admit when they fuk up, not good.

I think the guy understood that, he was annoyed that he was being a target because of his looks (dreads and such, my guess).

Personally, I went through a long-hair phase a long, long time ago. I would absolutely get targeted more by cops for questioning like this, it's not about race always, sometimes just looking sketchy will do it. Blacks might get that more often or at times undeservedly, but at the end of the day, if it happens and you don't make a big deal about it, I seriously doubt most cops will go on a racist attack with someone being cool about it. When I would get hassled, if you want to call it that, I always showed my ID and laughed about it later, them thinking I was a drug dealer because I am darker and had long drug-dealer hair. Whatever.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

My gut reaction is they guy kinda freaked out and did so quickly. I'm all for cops questioning suspicion. If you grew up with the crazy fuks i grew up with you'd understand why i feel that why. Who doesn't know that it's normal to have proper I.D.?

But wtf at the cop muting his recording device? Fuk that.

Lmao, I doubt you even watched the entire video. So doing his job properly was to continue escalating the situation pulling out a taser/gun and claiming that his garbage picker is a 'blunt' weapon and he felt threatened by it? After it was pretty clear the dude was just minding his own business. He knew damn well what he was carrying, he was just over-dramatizing it through his inflated ego and power trip. I'm sorry bud you are the delusional one here, the cop was way out of line.

He's a chit officer and deserves what he got, should have been without pay though. And you call him scum for literally listening to music picking up trash outside his home trying to make his community a better place. You are trash.

Some guys will even use props like that bucket of trash to act like they aren't loitering when they are out looking to panhandle or rob someone. Seen it many times guys handing out in the woods behind a gas station with an empty gas can asking people for money. After you see the same guy doing it two or three times you know what the deal is, and if a little old lady happens to be there alone or out of sight she will get her purse snatched.

There is nothing wrong with the cop approaching someone like this to see if he actually belongs there. The cop had no right to escalate it to the point of pulling his gun when they guy wasn't doing anything wrong but be uncooperative. There was obviouslyt no threat. Even if the guy was a panhandler or just loitering where he didn't belong all they should have done was told him to take a hike. Not threatened to kill him for holding a stick and some trash.

There were other ways to handle that situation.

Anyone have a time stamp for when their combined IQ reaches over 15? I just see two idiots arguing because both are too stubborn to accommodate the other. Officer ******* could have just walked in with him or Captain Planet could have just sat down for 5 minutes while he verified, etc.

Both are *******s. Anyone who thinks he shouldn't have to comply or show his ID is also a *******.

Makes me think of Richard Lee McNair when I see these "I'm not doing anything wrong" videos. Murderer, escaped from prison, gets stopped by cops right after the escape, and convinces him he's just out for a jog. Just LMAO at not ID'ing people or just taking their word for things.

it doesnt get more accommodating then offering the officer to walk with him to the door, get buzzed in, and open his own room door. An offer the officer didnt accept and an offer the officer didnt even mention to his superior.

Pretty much this. You only need to provide ID when you are suspected of committing a crime. You can comply or it is your right to refuse as well if you believe it's unlawful.

Nope, it doesn't. At the same time (to play devil's advocate), it doesn't get any easier than sitting on that bench for 5 mins while the officer does his check.

It's not hard at all. But you don't have to just to satisfy the ego of a power hungry LE. People shouldn't have to fear being tazed or shot in a country with alleged freedoms against actions like this.

They guy was 100% being harassed, but how hard is it to just show him his DL?

When you have two people with huge EGO's, this is what happens. EVERY. ****ING. TIME. Let the cop feed his ego and then call him an ******* under your breath as he leaves. LOL.

yes. I was pulled over a couple months ago, and the cop was obviously in a rage (imo an un-natty rage).

Once I read the body language of the officer, I made sure to provide short concise answers EVEN when he was asking me dumb angry questions like "have you been drinking!, where you going!?". Officer was visibly shaking from being so angry about something.

My wife and son were in the car too, and this was the first time ever being pulled over that I was afraid of what could happen. Wife thought it was so odd that if I was by myself, I would've been asked to step out of the vehicle.

at the end of it all, I received a ticket for not using a turn signal. Inside, I was upset but kept my mouth shut. When the officer went to his vehicle to do something, I told my wife and son to keep calm and do not say anything and that if I disagree with the ticket I handle it at court.

Officer continued mouthing off the whole time and last thing he said was "I could write you citations for more than 5 things, but you're lucky it's only 1. You must not like saving money."

I didn't respond, he was done, and we luckily parted without any further altercation.

I'd like to add that it shouldn't be the responsibility of the civilian to de-escalate a situation. It should be the cops because, you know, he should have been trained to do so.

If he was to respond to a domestic disturbance call should he fly off the handle with everyone else in the confrontation and threaten to shoot and taze everyone because he doesn't have control over the situation?

the worst part about this particular case is the cop iscreatingconflict from a situation that had no reason to escalate.

I do get that point and normally I am on the officer's side when I see these videos, but this guy had his headphones in and was picking up trash for Christ's sake.. He clearly was not a threat at all and he was pretty chill at first until the officer kept pressing him like a kunt. Then when the dude starts walking away picking up more trash the cop said he feels threatened by his 'garbage picker', that's when I was like aww fuk this cop. He's reaching for anything to try and get him and that's not a good way of policing, it just makes people hate cops more.

Yeah, cop was obviously a piece of sht, instigating and looking for a reason to escalate things. Regardless, it's not worth risking your life to make that point. Swallow your pride, sit on the bench for a minute, and avoid that absurd situation. Let the prick get his jollies off, and go about your day.

The entire episode was on the very edge of being reasonable suspicion up until the point he offered to buzz into the building and show the officer, that eliminated any reasonable suspicion from my point of view.

At that point the officer should have said, "Good day" and left. He didn't though.

dude, every time a cop pulls you over or asks you anything can be considered harassment. a person you don't know is invading your space, interrupting your day to get something he wants out of you.

the very concept of a cop is that. just for once, i would like to know what happens if the guy did everything he was told. i, contrary to my public claims, am a terrible driver. i do stupid shyt all the time, and get pulled over once a month. i'm not a drunk driver, i don't speed, but i do stupid crap like not signal, roll a stop, etc.
every time i get pulled over, the first things cops ask me is if i know why i got pulled over. 99% of the time i have no idea because i'm oblivious. then they tell me, then ask for papers, then tell me to sit tight. the longest it ever took was i think 5 minutes.
i'm not justifying what this cop did, and a more trained cop would've deescalated this much better. but he also only did his job. i don't think he was on some nazi agenda.

i have a cop friend, who has to make 8 "contacts" a day. that means pull people over, investigate, give tickets, etc. there's 700,000 cops in america. that's 5.6 MILLION interactions a day. that's 2 BILLION a year. 2 BILLION times a man with a gun approaches someone presumably doing something illegal. let's say this cop is 100% in the wrong. that's one fukup out of 2 billion. let's say this happens every hour. that's 7000 fukups out of 2 BILLION. human error and poor judgment or secret agenda?

just show id, go on about your day, and write a letter to your congressman if you're mad about it. life will go on. it's not worth getting killed over. and no, this isn't some civil rights uprising power movement. this is some college student kid playing a supreme court judge in an alley. odds are against him.

the worst part about this particular case is the cop iscreatingconflict from a situation that had no reason to escalate.
You are correct. Officers should be trained, and they should handle the situations correctly. HOWEVER, you shouldn't roll the dice for your life based on that. Just to prove a point, or just because you didn't do anything wrong.

"this dumb cop, I didn't do anything illegal, you can't tell me what to do, I...." <BLAM, BLAM, BLAM>

and then maybe the cop gets convicted after. But at least you died knowing you did nothing wrong.

A man should always maintain a certain level of self respect, even if its deemed "ego.." The civilian knew he was being unfairly targeted a d harassed. If he complied to the pricks unlawful commands, than the prick wins. Yes he put his life on the line ultimately, but he won. The prick is no longer a cop because this man stood up for himself and resisted. Saved the next man, maybe even his life.

In the end, cant argue the results.

Or maybe some other moron watches this video, thinks they are going to stand up against the next egotistical cop that stops them, and gets shot dead for it. You can spin this nonsense anyway you want it.

Because clearly I must not have any experience in multicultural areas if I'm the one willing to give a black guy the right to go about his day without considering him sketchy. Because clearly I must be the one with judgement issues if I'm not willing to stop and frisk every person I pass on the street. Your thinking is backwards dude.

What exactly is it about experience and crime data that is going to suggest to me that a black guy picking up trash is likely someone worth IDing?
The officer said multiple times throughout the video that he approached the man for sitting on the building property, not for walking around picking up trash. I live in a similar building surrounded by project housing. If someone who looked out of place was sitting on my front steps I'd want the police to ask the guy what he was doing also. This has nothing to do with race and more to do with the fact that the guy literally looks homeless in his demeanor and attire. Spend two seconds observing the city around you (you claim to be in a city, right?) and you know exactly what these types look like.

Rude and belligerent that's why the cop resigned right? He showed him his ID, the cop was a power tripping azzhole and resigned like a good little boy.
Honestly I hate the identity verification thing myself. I don't think I should be compelled to carry ID with them as free human beings. This is one of those things where I appreciate the police looking out for property but I'm conflicted about the ID stuff.

Normal people don't think or act this way.
sketchy looking = doesn't look like them

I see.
