It's not just luck that he was able to break away after Fresh Prince. Look at so many good actors who began in sitcoms. 90% of the time, those actors go nowhere once the show ends because the audiences will typecast them. Will Smith is the the big one who didn't have the same fate.
I think what really helped him break away was that he didn't really "act" in Fresh Prince, he just played himself. So when he started doing movies, you didn't think "oh that's that character from that show", you thought "oh that's Will Smith acting". The only other sitcom characters it can work for is people who played themselves like Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Larry David, etc., but none of those people ever tried becoming a movie star.
Never neg first but always neg back crew

Jamie Foxx is comparable Will Smith. Foxx got his first big break in "The Jamie Foxx Show," playing himself. The show ended in 2001, and he'd go on to star in "Ray," "Collateral," "Django."

Perhaps playing yourself is the way to succeed after a sitcom.

Probably the scientology lunacy caught up to his whole family and at this point they're complete nutcases. Although I suspect Jada Pinkett might have been the original nutcase.

Imo the cut-off between his great/good/decent and chit movies was around The pursuit of happiness/I am Legend.

I think the guy should just call it quits. Guy has been acting since the 90s and expects to get the same big roles that he had but lets be honest most of his roles are somewhat similar either being serious or action. The audience obviously want some fresh faces and the guy has just become old but he refuses to let go

He’s always been a chit actor... people are just starting to realize it now (finally). He just picked some good scripts in the past that were guaranteed summer blockbusters that made money.

Compare him to guys like Brad Pitt... Leo di Caprio... Daniel Day Lewis... Christian Bale... he cant hold a candle to any of them. Dude can barely even pull off a simple accent lol. Tom Cruise is a blockbuster guy now and even HE has more of a screen presence than Will does (and is more versatile).

He got type cast as “aww hell no” <blacktastic reaction> guy. Denzel or Idris are more careful to keep the cornballery down. I dont think its his fault though. It seems like once youve been in the business ~25 years either youre perceived to have dynamic range or youre considered a one trick pony. That one trick pony status might not even be your fault but if audiences just see you as that one thing sometimes perception becomes reality.

For the record Bright was actually a good movie and role but fuk if that character isnt the epitome of oh hell no guy that hes played in independence day, bad boys, mib, i am legend, pretty much the majority of non super serious roles hes done. I guarantee you his agent has told him to dead any scripts with a bunch of those scenes.

PS people should really leave his son alone. Will accepts him as he is. I would consider him a great father for that. Also dude has enough money to quietly buy every account in this thread and edit the posts to say hes great. Thats pretty powerful if you think about it.

As soon as he started trying to involve his son in his projects his career seemed to deflate a little. After Earth was crap. After that, I think it's just a combination of picking bad projects/getting older/the general bad Scientology vibes

Tom Cruise is even better than Will Smith at selecting scripts. In fact he’s probably the best I’ve ever seen in that regard. AND he can actually act. Collateral... Interview with the vampire... Tropic Thunder...

Then what happened?

His movie "After Earth" bombed hard. Movies like "Concussion," "Bright," and "Focus" were underwhelming. His son might be homosexual.

The primary opinion of Will Smith today is negative.

It's hard to be comic relief when you are middle aged, he did OK in the third Men in Black though. Otherwise he has had a string of ****ty movies, especially the space one with his kid.

Terrible comparison. Adam Sandler appeals to the scat and sex crazed 13-year-old audience and is not even remotely funny.. his last good movie was Funny People, and that’s saying something

I think Will has taken some time off movies to focus on building his children’s legacy, while also doing other stuff. Those mixed reviews for his recent movies (besides Aladdin) didn’t help much though.
