You're competing and you did great. Most people will never set foot on the mat, much less be in a real fight.

No gi is higher skill higher athleticism.

Having a loss is not bad. Somebody has to win and it doesn't have to necessarily be you. Hardest loss ever...pinned for 4 minutes.

But not submitted, and did learn how to escape.

Leave it all on the mat.

I try to leave it all out there. The girl who took gold is a fulltime competitor and really intense... I probably could, and should, have turned it up some on her. Live and learn. Silver medal is always tough because I keep thinking "what if..." Both of my finals matches were very narrow points victories for her (2-0 in gi, 3-0 in nogi) and I felt her getting burned out physically. Sometimes it's tougher when it's SO CLOSE. I'll be thinking about those matches for awhile.

No! I'm almost 32--way too old for MMA. I also value my brain too much and don't want to risk any concussions.

I have had to drain one ear. I kind of WANT cauliflower ear because I feel it looks badass but none has developed so far since that one time. We shall see.

1.5 years for a blue belt is actually pretty decent. I feel like blue belt competitions are the most fun, people take it seriously, yet it's somewhat relaxed at the same time. You'd need to pretty much do BJJ full time to get to the podium from purple and on.

I agree. You couldn't pay me to accept a promotion for at least the next two years. We do have belt promotions coming up in a few weeks, and I'm hoping for a stripe, but I don't even need one of those. Blue belt is GOAT. The purple and brown belts at our gym--they are SO GOOD and legit train with Gianni Grippo and hang with the black belts... and even they can sometimes lose first round at competitions like this one. It's another level.

Queer is totally fine but lesbian is slightly more descriptive. Queer is an umbrella term that can also mean attraction to men and nonbinary people and I'm pretty firmly on the "attracted to women" side. Not that I'd rule out all nonbinary people, I suppose.

Hmmmmm you know, there are just so few transgender competitors that I'm not certain of the general attitude. I think that most trans women do not compete and often aren't allowed to do so, but there are one or two who have done it without people making a fuss so I'm just not sure. Honestly, trans women in sports is one of the toughest things for me to figure out, and I think that's true for a lot of people. I don't know all of the relevant research but it certainly seems like a potential advantage to me, and I tend to apply the Golden Rule to this. If I were trans, would I compete? I wouldn't--I wouldn't want even the suspicion of an advantage. That's how I try to think about it. I would still feel like I could get a lot out of training, I just wouldn't feel okay taking medals for it. I already feel guilty enough simply being stronger or bigger than my opponents, as I was for this tournament since I was at the top of the weight class.
