It is now undisputed that Covid-19 should be taken seriously as a serious illness. How the late effects will have an impact will only become clear step by step. Recovered patients in diving are also at particular risk. The massive changes in the lungs can significantly increase the risk of accidents, said the senior physician of the Innsbruck University Clinic, Frank Hartig.

He heads the emergency department in the hospital and is the responsible crisis coordinator for Covid 19 patients. In the clinic, doctors have treated dozens of coronavirus patients in the past few weeks, from symptom-free spreaders to intensive care patients on the heart-lung machine. Among them were six active divers, all of whom did not have to be treated in hospital, but cured themselves in home quarantines. All of them were not severe cases, their illnesses were five to six weeks ago and they are considered to have recovered. But they can no longer dive. "The damage to the lungs is irreversible," said Hartig in an interview with the APA. And the,

"This is shocking, we don't understand what's going on here. They are probably lifelong patients, so it doesn't matter whether they dive again or not," said the doctor. The bad news was made clear by lung CTs. "They didn't get any better at all in imaging," said Hartig. "As an emergency doctor with 20 years of experience, you swallow when you see something like this in a 40-year-old patient."

In the control after several weeks, two patients showed significant oxygen deficiency when under stress as a typical sign of persistent lung shunt. In two, the bronchi were still very excitable when under stress, as in asthmatics. Four out of the six divers still showed impressive lung changes on the control CT. "I even called on the X-ray to see if they had swapped the pictures because a healthy patient was sitting in front of us," said Hartig. "When they saw their own pictures, it was shocking for them," said the doctor. "You have to check regularly with such lung damage."

To what extent long-term effects remain on the lungs is unclear according to the doctor and is currently speculative. "We don't know how much of the changes will last," said the doctor. When looking at the findings, however, it is difficult "to believe in complete healing". He therefore published an interim report in the diving magazine "Wetnote" to warn active divers. "After a Covid infection, even if you have only mild symptoms, you should definitely have a dive doctor examine you thoroughly, even if you still have an upright medical examination," said Hartig.

Under no circumstances should former patients practice their sport in the summer without clarification. There is already a debate among doctors about artificial ventilation. More and more medical professionals are observing that the condition of Covid 19 patients deteriorates rapidly as soon as they are inserted into the trachea and connected to a counseling device. Hospitals in the USA have therefore been trying to delay ventilation for as long as possible. The first warnings came from Italy, where the majority of the ventilated patients died.

Such observations are also made in the Innsbruck clinic. Patients come to the outpatient clinic with low oxygen saturation, except for increased respiratory rate, they are fine according to the circumstances, although according to the textbook they should be intubated immediately in the case of such poor blood gases, Hartig reported. "If you give them two liters of oxygen, the oxygen saturation will get a little better, but a few hours later, many of them are in the intensive care unit with intubation and severe lung failure," said the doctor. Many doctors feel that oxygen triggers cascades.

"It is worrying what we experience and what we do in the intensive care unit and it is clear how little we know," said Hartig. "We are talking to people and feel like they are over the mountain and they are dying two hours later," said the emergency doctor. In the case of seriously ill people, it is sometimes shown that oxygen can also be counterproductive. Divers have a higher level of oxygen when diving, for example if they practice sport with Nitrox, a mixture of nitrogen with oxygen. This could be dangerous if "the lung tissue is still sensitive," warned Hartig. "For this summer we are dependent on expert opinions," he emphasized that studies will only be available next year.

Patient I've been trying to keep from getting intubated for the past two weeks crapped out and got tubed. Patient is on ECMO now. He was starting to do better last weekend, getting his appetite back when he started to take a turn for the worst.

ECMO survival rates? 0-20% from what I see.

Another one of my patients who got intubated last week died overnight.

Two more of my patients are trying to die on me today.

One more day until I'm out of this nightmare and back in radiology.

Things kinda taking a toll here in Portugal. Everyone's quarantined at home for about 3 weeks now and still there are cases where they only started showing symptoms after 25 days.

How are things going in the US?

Varies by location, mostly. Some are pretty rough, most are mostly normal except the (and likely due to the) social distancing. Only about 39,000 deaths the last 3 weeks or so, not bad really

39.000?? dafuk

We got like 600+ here and everyone is in panic mode already...

Can't go out without masks anymore and only for essencial traveling ie. food, work (when allowed), checking up on elderly family members.

My state has about the same population as your country, and interestingly enough, basically the same deaths (677 last I see). That's 10.x million population vs the whole US is about 324 million. And the hotspots are not in my state at this time. Hence 39,000 and counting. And hence it mostly being normal except (because of?) social distancing in a lot of places (like my state). (so far)

The Rules:

1. Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.

2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.

3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.

4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.

5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.

6. Gloves won't help, but they can still help.

7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.

8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.

9. The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.

10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…or that?

11. You will have many symptoms when you are sick, but you can also get sick without symptoms, have symptoms without being sick, or be contagious without having symptoms. Oh, my..

12. In order not to get sick, you have to eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand and it's better not to go out, well, but no…

13. It's better to get some fresh air, but you get looked at very wrong when you get some fresh air, and most importantly, you don't go to parks or walk. But don’t sit down, except that you can do that now if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant (but not too old).

14. You can't go to retirement homes, but you have to take care of the elderly and bring food and medication.

15. If you are sick, you can't go out, but you can go to the pharmacy.

16. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house, which may have been prepared by people who didn't wear masks or gloves. But you have to have your groceries decontaminated outside for 3 hours. Pizza too?

17. Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with " I don't want to trigger panic, but…"

18. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but you can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.

19. You can walk around with a friend but not with your family if they don't live under the same roof.

20. You are safe if you maintain the appropriate social distance, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.

I'm on-board with it being a news/information thread, but my understanding was that some people wanted the new thread to merge both the news and the other thread back together for all coronavirus posts.

I don't really care if a mod wants to change the title to reflect it being a news thread, but I'm not sure the troll posts will respect it either way.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

Brazil's president still refuses to acknowledge coronavirus is a problem and keeps encouraging people to go out.

Meanwhile, patients are sharing rooms with the infected dead and his supporters keep protesting in the streets, even in front of hospitals and ambulances.

Sounds like your dream OP.

I'm not sure the point of this thread. There is zero actual new information coming out. Nobody has the testing for phase 2, little have it for phase 1. States are going to open up regardless. I promise you zero doctors are going to do any type of surgery without their patient being negative for the virus. We have no test to open back up as a whole, definitely don't have it for surgery patients. More and more comes out about this being a deliberate accident. The virus is super contagious, less deadly than other household virus's.

There is literally zero to bring to the table at this point until 3 weeks into lessening shelters. My mom upped her testing from 250 to 300, and was super happy about it, and she had the pathologist from State hospitals coming and seeing what she is doing. There is no way any state can do 100k+ test a day where we are at, besides the Texas and Florida Governor and maybe 1 or 2 more, no one else will chance their citizens dying for another month. Enjoy where you are at for the moment and go from there.

Too much madness dealing with a normal people covid thread and a lizard people (((they))) thread. It's really not a good idea for any moderator to be in the business of deciding what is or isn't truth or fiction, and direction from the top is to have one thread and merge all covid related threads into one stickied thread. I'll do my best to pay more attention and take out the pissing matches trash, I can see how that would be annoying.
