I'm not sure I believe that about Compton, but Newark is definitely beautiful according to Andrej.

He says his sons play in the grass every single day, just like back home in Israel.

Branchbrook park is a national treasure OP. Millions of people flock to newark every spring to see the beautiful nature here.

Don't let the idiots in this thread get you down. There's a couple rough blocks but that's every city. Nothing better than taking a walk down frelinghuysen Ave with the kids

Nice, thanks.

I admit I don't know chit about that place, but I've always trusted Andrej. Not saying that town is perfect, but he always wanted to live in the country, lots of grass, fresh air etc.

This is newark. And every street is like this. If he wants a place even a little more beautiful he can check out Irvington, NJ. It's right next to newark.

Just google "branchbrook park newark" It's beautiful. There were talks of making it a national park a few years back. But the county didn't want to.

This. The USA is HUGE compared to Germany or any European country. We have a lot of land, and about 75% of it is not "in demand" meaning you can find affordable housing. Most of the most expensive places to live are on the coasts: LA, NYC, San Fransisco, Boston...NJ is only expensive in the nice areas across the river from NYC. It's still cheaper compared to NYC but the commute is short so a lot of people commute every day.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

There are probably some nicer parts of Newark, I am not familiar with it.

I was looking at buying something in Parsippany. After living in Europe I was excited about the prices and how nice it looked. It then hit me I would be paying over 20k a year in property tax alone.

Property tax in Germany is what, like 1.5 percent? Additionally the houses and apartments are expected to last a lot longer than an American house.

Edit - I just wanted to add, this was another reason so many people including wealthy people with multiple properties were upset about the tax cuts. They previously could deduct these high local taxes from their federal taxes. They cannot anymore.

Go to Zillow .com and look up some properties and neighborhoods. They usually show price trends and estimated property tax.

Weird thread for many reasons.

NJ is the most densely populated state in the US, it's pretty expensive to live there. A ton of people work in NYC and live in NJ, which has driven property values up. In fact, pretty sure property taxes were just raised in NJ within the past few months.

Newark has a bad reputation, but it also is mid-gentrification so there are semi "nice" areas now. Sort of like Jersey City, but a little further behind imo. It's one of the cheaper areas to live, though. Your friend would have gotten much more land and bang for his buck in about every other state though. Unless he moved there to commute to NYC or has a decent paying job in NJ.

I haven't been to Germany, but I looked at properties there in the past and they seemed pretty cheap, so I don't understand how your buddy would find NJ property cheap by comparison unless you had some inflated idea of property value in the US.
