This. I was pissed after watching covenant. It alone wasn’t the worst movie ever but it wasn’t in line with Prometheus. Everyone I know that did like Prometheus wanted more story about the engineers. They missed a great opportunity to have something really good there imo.

Give it a bump when you do. I’d like to see what you thought after 2nd viewings. I might do the same. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them and would prob like them more a 2nd time through.

It's one of those highly flawed pearls.
It could have been an alltime great movie had they just taken a couple more weeks to remove the stupid plotholes and behaviour from the botched script. (unless Lindelof was actually messing it up and it started out good.)
It was a beautifully designed movie with some great performances, Michael Fassbender especially and a solid idea (H.P. Lovecrafts "Mountain of Madness"in space). But it ended up unwatchable due to totally weird character behaviour and wtf moments. Sad cause it was so close to being great.

It's like the Game of Thrones Season 8 of movies.

What made the original alien so good was fear or the unknown

Prometheus and covenant shat all over that, with a stupid origin story no less, and that's barely scratching the surface

At least avp wasn't canon so its forgivable, but this and covenant are now written into xenomorph lore

I think Human understanding of Psychology would be thrown out the window completely on an Alien planet millions of miles away from the rest of Civilization. I lol if you think you would be acting rational in those situation especially after everything they encountered so quickly.

The character can act irrational, but they shouldn't act illogical in the eyes of the viewer. Running away from a monster way faster than you is irrational behaviour, but really natural and follows logically from the situation. Displaying behaviour, that contradicts statements made 5 minutes ago is just bad writing.

it could have been great. but left too many unanswered questions which made it a bit of a turd. it's ok for entertainment.

and why did they cut so much of it out. like that snake part with the black slime. like 5mins+ taken out which would have made it far better.

and the ending with the sloot wanting to meet the engineers not their own planet.. and then that movie not having her in it.

wtf. total disappointment. oh yeah. and more unanswered questions

But thats how Aliens is. It is always about giving you a taste but never a full answer and leaving you wondering a lot of things.

I thought Prometheus was an amazing reboot of the franchise bringing a very good budget after aliens 3 and resurrection which were a bunch of corny 1 liners and reaching too far into 1 upping the action and bringing humor to the story.

It brings a lot more philosophy into things. Engineers create humans who create robots who create aliens who destroy humans who also destroy engineers , creating this vicious circle of creation and destruction. Just like how the engineers created the humans who created the robot(s) that killed them, the humans created the robots who created the aliens who kill them.

The entire point of the movie Alien is the fear of the unknown, its literally the title. Aliens only worked because the aliens were mostly hidden in shadows, and your fears turn out worse than expected (the queen).

Everything after either had brightly lit aliens, alien DNA splicing, or exploring the alien's origin in full. We now know more about the alien's past and creation than our own, think about it. Prometheus was one of the worst offenders of this, it took a massive chit on the mystery of the alien. Its origin were stupid as fuk too. Gay albino bodybuilders used their black goo (no homo) as a bio-weapon, which some gay android then took and mutated into a xenomorph egg, where some gay albino bodybuilder managed to steal a whole lot of, but crash landed on LV426. Absolutely ridiculous.

The only way to save the alien franchise is to kill any canon past Aliens, and put it back into its roots, always lurking in the shadows, barely seen.

The franchise last hurrah was actually the Alien Isolation game which captured all the original fear, but not enough people supported it, so there's no part 2 now. Shame.

Exactly.

How the phuck can those 2 scientists get lost when they have radio contact with a ship, with a 3D mapped layout of the caverns? The second you lost radio contact you just retrace your steps, or go back to the group.

How did Idris Elba's character pull that theory out of his ass about them creating biological weapons to destroy humanity?

How was she able to run a marathon after having surgery?

Why did noone ask her after she collapsed into the room covered in blood; "What happened?!" They didn't think that maybe there may have been danger? They didn't display a normal human response.

Why the dramatic reveal that Whelan was alive? What bearing does that have on the stakes?

How did she - after surgery - outrun a 12ft male alien?

That's only a few things that annoyed me when watching them film.

Retarded. (IMO of course, each to their own. I like ranting about this film.)

I could have let the dumb stuff go if it was intentionally a B movie, but it seemed like it was trying to be some high brow sci fi film.

The only good thing about the movie was laughing along with the youtube reviewers trashing it...

That dude in the Youtube vid could honestly sap the joy out of anything. He’s the kind of guy who could appraise a flawless masterpiece but wouldn’t actually be moved by it.

But yeah, I agree with Opie that Prometheus is not a bad watch. Alien Covenant on the other hand is fukin’ terrible.

Don't get why it gets so much hate? Yea the plot is a bit dumb in parts, but at least they tried to steer the franchise in a new direction. It could have been the start of a great soft reboot, had it not been for the pathetic Alien Covenant.
If you've only seen Prometheus once you should give it a second viewing, you'll appreciate it more. Especially that abortion scene, yikes.
Alien 3 directors cut is better than all of those

Prometheus is pretty good but it’s no Alien 3

LOL, I don't know how you got that impression.

I had the same experience as him, and I'm someone who typically doesn't figure out 'the twist' in films, because I just like to passively watch movies. I honestly don't nitpick films, but retarded things kept happening every 10-15 minutes and not even I could ignore the problems piling up.

This was one of the first reviews I watched that cracked me up, that pointed out other things and the lazy writing...

(Skip to 5:19... "This movie makes no phuckin sense!" I was cracking up, that's exactly the emotion I felt.)

I forgot to say... It was the first and only movie that I've ever witnessed someone walk out of in disgust, and I've seen a lot of movies at the cinema.

Spoiler!
Just agree with me.
But yeah, I agree with Opie that Prometheus is not a bad watch. Alien Covenant on the other hand is fukin’ terrible.
I honestly preferred Covenant to Prometheus. IMO at least it didn't pretend to be anything other than a blockbuster sci fi film.

(PM in bound soon. ADHD... I read it, planned to reply... Skipped my mind until seeing your reply.)

covenant and the gay flute was disappoint as well. i enjoy promethus for what it is. but acknowledge it sucks in certain areas as is rushed. they should have added an extra hour and did it justice. like when that guy returning to his crew and fking everyone up after he gets Hulk like powers. why so mad brah?

anyway, let's move over to the point of this post!

no doubt most of you virgins haven't listened to the alien audiobooks on audible or available elsewhere. but holy sh*t they are amazing and just like movies themselves with different actors for the voices. they take place in between the original movies. there are other audiobooks but have just the one gay narrator so don't reach the same hnnnnnnngh levels as those below

Alien: Out of the Shadows

Alien: River of Pain

Alien: Sea of Sorrows

Will do. I mean I am certain that I really liked Prometheus when it came out but the overall direction has yet to fully satisfy me. A third prequel is meant to come out and hopefully that brings everything together in a good way.

I have to admit - I wasn't thrilled when I first saw it. I think this was due to the expectations and ties with the Alien franchise. I've watched it a few times since then and I admit I judge it too hardly. It's a really good movie. I love the direction it started taking the franchise. Then Alien: Covenant came out and absolutely destroyed everything Prometheus tried to do. I mean, I'm not a movie critic and I enjoyed Alien 3 and Resurrection despite not being great....but wow, Covenant was horrible. We spent a couple years waiting for the follow up to see the origins of the "Engineers" and then David rekts them in a 45 second clip.

On the contrary, it's overrated af.

It's a 2+ hour long navel-gazing artsy-farts bs that nobody asked for about an irrelevant plot point on the origin of the xenos/jockeys that is basically "yo, some jacked supersmart aliens created life on Earth, btw they created the xenomorphs as well but then they fuked up". And it still fails to accomplish that. It sets out to answer questions but that gets thrown out and we are presented with even more headscratching bs. Plus the whole Christian/faith theme doesnt work.

But OK Ridley, make a prequel, its your legacy after all. But at least take the time and effort to actually come up with a plot that goes beyond the above sentence. Bonus points for writing a roster of characters that the viewer doesnt want to strangle 20 minutes into the movie. And who are not complete fukups/retards. Because you need them to be retards - despite being the very best the science field has to offer - to actually move the movie forward.

And of course the whole movie and the cast are glossed over in Covenant and we are back to square one to get a generic "retards get hunted down by monster, they win, but then they dont haha" crapfest.

Ridley really should have sat down to filter his ideas and thoughts, because he ended up with a script that was glued together from the remains of 5 shredded ones.

edit: Ok so the absolute hack Lindelof rewrote the script. Brilliant.

I mean it was better than all the other recent Alien crap because it atleast had some sort of an idea behind it, but it just fell apart as the movie went on. Too many illogical choices being made for the sake of the story and tension.

But yeah, you'd think that a crew of highly expert explorers going to a far away solar system and planet would have an extremely careful protocol and scientific approach on how to slowly explore a planet, but none of that at all

It was ambitious tho I'll give em that
