Well at least the man won't have to pay child support if he's turning 18 lol. Though, times are different and kicking your kids out at 18 can be a little harsh if they can't make it work but the damn child has as job and could most likely earn his own way so why shouldn't he? When I was 18 I wanted out of the house, went to college got a job and never went back. Helicopter parents are why kids complain when they are 30year olds and were never taught personal finance in school and wonder why they live paycheck to paycheck. Can't teach responsibility if they never get any.

Yep. Dad does kind of seem like an inflexible *******. Can neither imagine letting an 18-year-old live at home rent-free indefinitely with no conditions, nor kicking them out with no assistance of any kind, but you've got to show progress and get independent.

On the other hand, we're only getting the mom's story and he might have just been reacting to her. My guess is that if it went all the way to her serving him with divorce papers, we're not hearing the whole story about how extreme her position actually was. Realistic chance he wanted the kid out because he isn't getting laid anymore and figured having the house to themselves would improve the marriage, didn't realize his wife actually just no longer wanted to wife.

Either way, now she's doubled-down on her vision for it and the kid has the guilt of the family breaking up so mommy can have her little man there for her forever. Now he literally can't leave without feeling like he ruined everything for nothing. He's the next Michael Rotondo. That, or he'll run screaming from the house when he realizes what happened and mom will never hear from him again.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

lots of confusion here.

a) the dude wants to own his own property and succeed. no 'orders' needed.
b) designing his life whether he stays or goes is exactly the 'helicopter' to cause people to fail on their own.

I do not see what anyone is doing if they do not want a legacy. Probably thinking he can enjoy some ideal drugged out life afterwards (like the person mentioning he thinks he'll get laid more with his son gone) not realizing how much abandoning your legacy epitomizes everything undesirable.

Do some idiots think an 18-year-old cannot understand conversation and needs some gaming vs just articulating what works well? He probably thinks more capably than his parents at this point.

Nah he's a dumbass. Marriage down the drain lol. His ego was too big. Now his relationship with his son is strained. I'll be damned if I lose my wife over such a stupid disagreement.

The wife kicked him out the house too and will be banging men in his old bed and shower.

If the wife is just going to get pumped and dumped then it sounds like he dodged a bullet.

Can someone aware me on why you *******s keep mentioning getting an apartment in downtown of a major metropolitan on a minimum wage job at 18??

Are you really so entitled that that’s the minimum standard?

Get a fukking room in a student house?? $450-$600. Why is that not the starting point?? All this proves is how coddled kids who live at home are. So much so that they cannot even fathom the idea of just renting a room and their mind shoots right to getting an apartment. Just lol. Kids insist on staying at home because they are so used to their parents helicoptering them then get mad at their parents when they’re 30 and don’t know how to be independent.

This is just ridiculous. All you're doing is stunting your kids growth. I'll keep saying this, rich people don't do this sh!t to their kids. It's people who had to struggle, and now think their kids should....cause "I had to do it!".

Just LOL @ kicking your kid out at 18 to waste 20k/year on some crappy apartment, when that money could go to investments or a business. Also LOL @ people thinking a kid who doesn't want to jump right into the BS college system is a bad thing.

Sadly that kid is going to become a basement dwelling mommas boy.

The father could have at least gave him a year to find out what he was going to do. While he was figuring it out he could find part time work, etc. After that if he still doesn't have what he wants to do then kick him out.

The kid in the OP wasn't rotting away though on video games though.

I mean the arguments ITT are a step below some parents who would never put their kid in a private school, cause....."I did fine in public school!"

brb making an 18 year investment in your kid

brb throwing them out to "sink or swim" instead of setting them up to be successful post graduation

Colleges are filled with rotters going through the motions on their parent's dime. I really don't see how that's better in any way.

Far better for this kid to gain some life experience and figure out what he wants to do

Brah did you read my post? I’m a little confused. Do you find the idea of having to make a sacrifice from a total luxury lifestyle to rent a room “ridiculous?” Rent should not cost you 20k per year.

If you find anything less than an apartment to live at ridiculous you kinda prove my point about how coddled people are nowadays. Please clarify.

Here’s the thing:

Lots of rich kids move out too. Looking at millionaires is a bad comparison since the vast majority of society aren’t millionaires. It’s about building that experience, that development. Doing your own laundry, washing your own dishes, making your own food, being forced to fix your own issues instead of yelling MOMMY. It’s an entire mindset, it’s becoming self sustainable now so you don’t suffer your whole life because you don’t have the mindset to figure out small technical things on your own. It’s about having the willpower to build your own ikea furniture without pleading for help. I’ve seen the difference in mindset so many times.

Most recent example: I used to have a roommate, was this 20 year old behemoth fukking gross whale 5’0 200lb excuse of a girl. Was her first time moving out, evidently spoiled as fuk. The hot water heater stopped working. So I just showered in ice cold water. She comes running to me: “dassitman hey how are you showering it’s not working? I could never shower like that. Can you please fix it??”

That’s her first instinct. My first instinct is to go to the water heater and read the guideline on how to reset it. 2nd instinct is that I have to go to work so will fix it after work and just shower in freezing cold water. Having the heater on makes a big difference even if you’re taking cold showers.

She has never faced an iota of adversity in her life and just expects her parents to do everything for her. The mere thought of sacrificing a hot shower is unfathomable to this whale. The mere thought of trying to figure out a problem? Nope, let’s ask someone else to do it. It’s a small example but meeting people like these again and again and people on the misc who find renting a room inconceivable to them just proves to me how important it is to move out especially if helicoptered by parents. Hell I see it in my own house. My older brother didn’t move out until 21, regretted not moving out during first year like me.. both faced lots of child abuse. Like a little bytch every time he hurts himself he goes crying to mommy over text or call. Once he slightly burnt his hand..... gotta send a pic to mommy and give her unnecessary anxiety!!! Leg feels sore? Gotta bytch to mommy! Got the cold? Bytch to mommy! Such a bytch move. Meanwhile I don’t tell my parents shyt and hope to God I don’t face a situation where that changes and that it can stay that way. Both of us were abused, and he regretted not moving out at 18. He chose not to move out until 21 and now expects everything handed to him and goes running to his parents over every bit of adversity despite carrying a lot of contempt towards them. I saw the light and got the fuk out. I’m glad I did. I couldn’t imagine explaining to my folks why I’m out at 11pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and going to Monday morning calculus hung over and stumbling with the boys towards a seat in an overpacked classroom where we all blankly stare at the profs face in 1st year because it’s a review of grade 12 calc and no Friday classes. No amount of money can replace living in residence with a bunch of other young twerps and doing everything together and fukking the girl next door by day and then studying for your Econ exam in the floor lounge by night. Those are memories that no amount of money can ever replace. Ever. Anyway it’s a similar effect on kids who are spoiled or helicoptered without the abuse. Like my younger brother who was spoiled to death. All you end up doing is raising narcissists who are literally mentally incapable of even processing the idea of adversity or someone else’s perspective. They’re just not capable. I’d rather have a child go through the mud a little than be that narcissistic. The mere fact that people’s first thoughts are about the affordability of an APARTMENT at 18 makes me want to bang my head against a wall

I’m still confused by what in my post warranted a response of ridiculous. I like you as a poster but what is so inconceivable about renting a room?

I’m not understanding why we even are discussing apartments itt.

Also idk how it works in America but consider this. Here’s how it is in Canada: you get student loans for tuition. You also get a grant portion which is optional and makes it more than possible to pay rent for a single room (not an apartment) and have left over for food and other expenditures. In turn you have to be wise with your spending.

The point is you get enough to survive.

I’m guessing in America you get enough to get by as well.

Now let’s compare. One kid moves out at 18, gets student loans, and manages the excess to spend on rent, food, entertainment, knowing he has to somewhat carefully manage expenses.

One kid stays at home because he lacks will power or whatever, and blows all the excess he gets over his tuition on food and entertainment. Let’s be honest, most kids living at home at 18 aren’t investing their money or saving up. So who got more out of the exchange? The kid who blew it all on refined carbs and sugars or the kid who blew it on rent, his own travel, alcohol, set his own alarm clock in the morning and then the rest on refined carbs and sugars?

For you people who didn't move out till 30, did you have your own personal car, or would you drive mommy/daddy's car?

Did you go on any vacations? Did you do any grocery shopping? Did you cook your own meals, or did mommy cook for you? Same with laundry, the lawn, housework, etc.

Normal relationships with family offer advantages. no need to avoid these.

I was 'spoiled' in receiving support. I also naturally worked as hard as I could, succeeding well, until some of the 'hard lesson' b.s. which simply caused me to lose my 6-figure job offers from subsequent time costs and end up facing trouble with the law (they used physical force to take money, absolute scum b.s. not existing in the elite world) because a) other people ended up exposed to the physical attacks and b) losing tonnes of money disrupts everyone else relying on payments.

Stupid. No need to go out of your way to cause trouble.

The kid is a hard worker and active, he's clearly not a rotter. Like I pointed out before, rotter are the ones who go to college on their parents dime and just coast. Then they comeback in 4 years with some BS degree, and can't find a job. Ultimately LDARing back with their parents. This kid....sounds nothing like them.

Just makes no sense to have him waste money on rent if he's trying to start his life. I can't tell you how many people I've met in business who got their helping hand at the start from their family. Jews, Asians, all do this, and then others wonder why they flounder.

It should actually be a huge goal to move out of mommy and daddy's house after high school.

Lots of assuming here.

So what if someone moves back in for a short while after their Bachelors. As if that invalidates everything else. Staying at home the whole time doesn’t increase your odds of finding a job nor increases the odds that you pursue a valuable degree.

Regardless of moving back in you built a lot of life skills and experiences that no one can take away from you.

Not being able to find a job sucks but that has fuk all to do with staying at home, and yes it’s better to move back in than be homeless but once you get a job you move back out and try to no longer rely on your parents. I moved back in for 8 months and then got the fuk out.

Some of you people have completely ridiculous standards for your kids to remain with you through college.

Brb taking away all the fun and freedom at college with the risk of being plunged into huge debt, whilst being de facto homeless in an economic wasteland in a country wrapped in a semi civil war. Brb gotta enlist and risk my life overseas because I made it to 18 years old in life.

Like many people have said : rich people don't do this. Allowing your kid to make mistakes and have fun within reasonable limits is helping him grow. I stayed at home all through college, I got my law degree from a reputable college and I still had to work hard to get a really good job. Things aren't easy out there. The chances of making it at 18 with no money and support are very slim. You'll dump someone into poverty and you'll have just delivered a poor kunt to society. Thanks for raising a poverty peasant who will most likely spawn more peasants.

As if being a supportive parent will turn your kid into some douchebag hedgefund baby. You're giving a kid you hopelfully raised well a strong platform to start life. You provide education, food and guidance for as long ast hey need it so they can be BETTER off than you.
