From the perspective for potato OP, let me explain it in a way you may understand: your wagecel job fires you on 12/31/2019.... You don't work for an entire year, go back to school, and collect zero net income... Should you pay income tax for the year 2020? By your logic, yes.... By normal people logic, no.

You’re assuming he doesn’t pay tax because ‘he’s smart’. All the evidence points to him not paying tax because he’s a crap businessman

"The New York Times has obtained tax-return data extending over more than two decades for Mr. Trump and the hundreds of companies that make up his business organization, including detailed information from his first two years in office.."
And the article already covers the question as to whether these are simply paper losses - they are not. He is actually hemorrhaging cash through these "investments".

You have overhead, real estate, insurance, utilities.... The NFL was tax exempt until 2015, is that also a horrible business?

Hotels and Casino's are taxed the same way as real estate as the principle asset is the building. I am assuming the Golf Courses are usually part of the Hotel Property and accounted for in the same filing.
All the evidence points to him not paying taxes because standard GAAP and IFRS practices handle depreciation of buildings in a similar way. If Trump dies transferring ownership or Sells a property there will be a taxable event which will more than make up for the years of not paying taxes...

He was at a net loss prior to depreciation expense.
^^^ That?^^^^
You realize that means he was easily making 10s of millions per year right?

Think of why that would not matter at all in Trumps situation. It was referred to multiple times on this page.
