a) As of right now, to my knowledge no one thinks a national lockdown is necessary or will even work properly at this point. I think a nationwide mask mandate is what is being recommended along with further encouraging people to follow the CDC guidelines to not reopen without restrictions without meeting certain requirements on case numbers.

b) Trump was warned about this by people like Rick Bright, but he had Rick Bright fired. I think it really boils down to the fact that we were having record economic growth and everything felt good. And Trump, having an election coming up, didn't want people to panic or to blame him. He hoped it would just go away. Of course, it didn't because science actually matters and the truth isn't a matter of opinion. He gambled and lost.

Johnson and Johnson vaccine trial is on track to complete by end of January. Their vaccine is a dsDNA vaccine, and should thus be more stable at higher temperatures than the RNA vaccines. It is delivered via a live modified adenovirus that does not replicate, but can enter the cell.

Yep. If China had not taken the actions they had, perhaps tens of millions would have died. In my view, they did what they had to do and it worked out well for them. Tough lockdowns seem to work best if you can contain the area to a few cities or a small state. Also, controlling the border is an issue. We have seen many islands do well with lockdowns and border testing.

Aggressive contact tracing and testing can circumvent the need for a lockdown if done right, as was seen in Taiwan. To my knowledge, Taiwan never had to lockdown. They just had a lot of testing and tested everyone who entered the country. They were able to isolate and quarantine the infected before it ever turned into a large outbreak. They only had 7 covid deaths, which is an extraordinary success for a region so densely populated. Their VP is an epidemiologist.

Our VP is an evolution denier who prayed as people died.

Pretty much the same standard side effects. Nonspecific responses, such as swelling or pain at the point of injection, tiredness, fever or headache, as well as muscular or joint pain.
