One HUGE thing boomers always leave out is that FICO was introduced in 1989. They didn’t have to deal with credit scores at all when they were busy going to college for 1/100th of what it costs today or earning enough on a high school education to have a house, a stay at home wife, cars and vacations.

I think most millennials are lazy and stupid. I do agree that housing is the main thing that's ****ed for them compared to boomers however.

Better low housing prices and higher interest rates of course.

We max out at 8-8.5h days here in Europe. And we still see the same with the quality of life of Boomers vs Millenials.

The mere fact that it is stillpossiblein the current economy for a young person to get a job, buy a house or get an education

Does not in any way contradict the fact that it is much more difficult to do those things compared with any time in recent history

Of course people can better their situation. That goes for people my age too.

At a micro level they can improve their own circumstances

At a macro level it requires a majority of people to recognise there is a problem and vote accordingly (or in reality, to run for office although in the US that game is rigged too)

Having a huge part of the economy’s output being directed towards speculation in the housing market is not good for the economy

I say this as someone who has a significant direct financial benefit from house price gains

I’m betting a lot of those mortgage loans are fixed loans instead of variable though. Not sure why anyone would get a variable loan when interest rates are sub 3.5%.

Fixed or not, if mortgage rates rise house prices will most likely fall.

Those who FOMO'd will be facing a tough choice when they owe $500k on a $300k house. Yes the payments are small since you locked in the old rate, but you can't sell the house without taking a bath.

What if you have to move for your job, or to be closer to family, or a due to a divorce? 30 years is a long time...

Well yeah, as long as housing prices drop with rates rising, then there’s a good chance someone would pay the equivalent mortgage or less than currently.

There will have to be a significant drop in housing prices though. I.e a $500k home at 2.9% today, will need to be $350k @ 6% for the $350 to be a better deal.

The question is, will housing prices crash again like in 2008? I sure hope so.

Right. Each individual bears some responsibility for the amount of effort they are willing to put in.

But this is a systemic issue that has been rolling since at least the early 70s.
When the world loses confidence in the American government’s ability to pay its debt, or the interest rate on our debt becomes unsustainably high, choices will have to be made. No more kicking the can down the road, no more 10-year projections to balance the budget. Congress, in a state of emergency, will have to take a buzzsaw to appropriations. And the empire will be the first thing to go.
https://mises.org/power-market/comin...merican-empire

We [the US government] really can't afford higher interest rates. And if we just keep printing more and more $$$?

And the government doesn't have sufficient assets to cover what is owed.

This is why I think the Great Reset is like a player flipping the table and declaring "new rules".

Buy a 100k small two bedroom house in the country
Wife doesnt work
2 kids
Have one base model truck with no accessories
No cell phones in the house
No cable/streaming
One TV in the family living room
Kids wear hand me downs
Rarely go out to eat and going to Dairy Queen once a month is a treat

The same lifestyle and opportunities the vast majority of boomers "enjoyed", exist today. All it requires is that you live like they did.

Im an older miscer and I grew up watching my parents generation and I LOL at the idea that they had it easy and that money and opportunities were falling off of the trees. The literally killed themselves in factories with no regulations, no HVAC, etc.... Everything this generation enjoys today was created because their life was awful and brutal.

This generation sits in HVAC controlled buildings, sipping on a Starbucks, while complaining on the internet on their smartphones about how awful they have it. They wouldnt last a day in the society boomers lived in.

The biggest asset is not gold or land, but future cash flows received through taxation. They have more than enough to cover what is owed.

I'll never understand why political debates always have to be so black and white like ITT. I'm a Millennial and am doing quite well for my age (I work in consulting and will probably be changing to a job paying over $140K base soon), but I also acknowledge that I'm extremely fortunate to have immigrant parents who instilled the value of education and hard work in me since I was a kid.

I certainly sympathize with Boomers that a lot of people my age spend their money very foolishly and make poor decisions that they want other people to pay for. That said, I also think it's true that the Boomers have been pretty greedy/stingy and this has fked our generation in a lot of ways too. It's insane to me how my current firm hasn't raised salaries in over a decade despite the fact that life has gotten materially more expensive, the basic requirements for the job have become much more extensive, and the competition is much higher. It's possible for both parties to be partially at fault and I'd rather politicians try to figure out how to fix this mess before it gets worse instead of masturbating over who is more at fault.

Good post. In regards to wages, since the 1970’s we’ve seen a near doubling of the labor supply with women entering into the market. That’s going to depress wages from rising, but one would think there would be a point where the labor supply and wages would intersect and stabilize.

However, I’m curious what the increase in immigrants (legal & illegal) since the 1980’s has done to the labor supply and wages. White collar jobs that tend to be hire paying get increased pressure with increases in HB1, EB2, EAD immigrants which leads to depression of wages. HB2 or illegals, will have an effect on blue collar jobs, but not as drastic effect as there aren’t too many Americans wanting to do those jobs. It is with those immigrants children, where the labor supply into higher paying blue collar and white collar jobs will be felt, again increasing the labor supply leads to decreasing wages. There isn’t a chance for the market to stabilize when immigrant quotas keep getting increased.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t have any immigration, but it must be much tightly regulated in order to help increase wages. Maybe a Swiss model should be something that is adapted here.
